Ok, so everyone I have talked to knows about Menzoberranzan, the Drow Underdark city set in the Forgotten Realms. Any tips on making a city not so big/large? Maybe just a couple (say 6 or 7) smaller houses that fled Menzoberranzan and made an outpost in the Underdark. To....join together and protect against all their enemies.
Looking for some drama/story arcs/epic encounters. Have some idea and I know there are some source books out there, but would love any input. What really made it feel like the Underdark?! Living countless years under miles of rock and never seeing the light of day. Surrounded by enemies, often the worst enemy was the Drow soldier/house next to you.
I was going to start with aggressive patrolling around my Drow outpost, where the party will encounter some traditional and some not-so traditional enemies. Can't just keep the party "on patrol" all the time though.
Bribes, assassins, espionage, sabotage, sorties, what else really makes or breaks an Underdark campaign? I really am not sure my players are willing/able to lower themselves down to such evil thinking....however, its just a one-off/backup campaign in case the other 2 DMs can't run theirs for whatever reason (this has happened a lot in the last 6 months, maybe 4 times).
For characters, I'll probably bring pre-gens, because players will probably have short notice and I won't know which players will show if the main 2 DMs don't show. I know I want at least 1 female Drow cleric, to be bossing everyone around & one player will luck out and play a Hobgoblin slaver with multiple goblins to manage - all expendable of course.

Watch some Westerns.
Make it like a pioneer town in an Western. Beset on all sides by enemies, only the occasional "lone ranger" comes through.
