Hello all! I'm currently working on a homebrew random encounter table that I'm starting to realize I have some questions about. I was hoping someone out there could lend me some advice? The table I was working on is a d100 table that has everything from combat encounters, boons/buffs, found treasure, weather effects and more. I've basically tried to make every 10 options be a different theme.
1. I'm unsure as to when I should use this table and how often. Originally I was thinking to use it no more than twice a day and only during periods where nothing else is really planned or happening. Such as, long distance traveling, down time, and maybe during a watch. Any thoughts on how often or when this table should be used?
2. I was thinking that I would roll on the chart to see what happens, but then ran into the problem of what to do if I land on something that could potentially be applied to one or more members of the party, I'm unsure how to fairly determine who gets the selection. For example - I have one selection that does this "You ignore difficult terrain. You gain +2 initiative and +10 Speed." I also have an option that could result in them activating a trap and potentially taking damage. Any thoughts on how I would choose, or let the players choose who "activates" the result?
3. I've noticed that I'm creating a number of effects that may have overlapping durations and I feel like I might be creating more work for myself in regards to keeping track of all these things. For example - A roll on the table can give 1d6 days buff for a PC, but another roll on the table could result in 1d6 days weather effect, like rain. So, depending on when these rolls occurred I may need to track how many days the weather lasts for and how long the PC has the buff for. In the meantime, there may be additional rolls on the table that generate additional hour or day long effects. Any thoughts on how to simplify this or make it easier to keep track of all these things? (This may be a less relevant question depending on the answer to my other questions)
This is my first time trying to come up with a table like this and I feel like I'm probably overcomplicating it. Appreciate any help you can offer!
