Heya people. I need some help: You see, I about to dm a campaign, and one of the things I really like is make rivals, or personal enemies against players.
The character of one of my players is a Warforged Paladin called Defender. He basically was forced to participate in some war, and he wanted peace, but the war really mess with him, so he wanted to attone, and became a paladin and he deeply values his old companions in the war.
When he run away from the war alongside his friends he meet a enemy sentinel going after them. And he now try to hide, not wanting to get caught against such enemy.
That enemy sentinel is the rival I will make. What I try to do with rivals is take some attributes of the character (in this case of Defender, his honor, morality and justice) and have the rival twisted mirror of what said character could become (in the case of this rival, a imoral warforged, who lost himself in the killing and now just find joy in ending life's).
Since Defender shall be a Crown or Glory Paladin I was thinking in this way:
A Conquest Paladin
Vengeance Paladin (because of a backstory his old creator be once killed by accident by the hands of Defender squadron, and he sworn revenge against the one who did such thing, and the reason he lost himself)
Oathbreaker (because he was once a Devotion paladin, but because he was lost in the carnage, broke his oath. And also make experiments in other people making them a amalgamation of machine and flesh)
And since Defender is a paladin based in strength, this rival (that I will call Savage) shall be a Dexadin.
But I also thought he be a Rogue of one of the following:
Mastermind, Assassin or Inquisitor: Because his way in do things would be spy his enemies and collect information against them. Not to mention one of his favorite tactics would be killing a person and stole that person face to act as a disguise, and then strike his target)
Swashbuckler: For a character more based in killing his enemies with the most stylish fighting, hit them where it hurt. And maybe later become a Hexblade, making a pact all in the name of his revenge. No matter the cost.
And finally Arcane Trickster: For a more personal approach in use illusions and manipulation, and confuse his targets to them finishing them off.
My quest is, what best approach should I go? Any tips I could do about how to create that rival or where I should go?
I personally think Oathbreaker as one of the most important things to a Paladin is their oath. Having Savage be the dark mirrored version of Defender and trying to goad/lure him into committing the same offense as he had made could be a very Batman vs Joker sort of dynamic. Doing horrible things to Defender and the people he cares for in order to have Defender go against his oath in order to defeat Savage or following his oath even though that means Savage continues wreaking mayhem is an interesting dynamic as well.
