Wannabe DM needs advice. I need a few activities to foster team building at the start of a 1 shot.
Setting is subterranean, literally a giant spiders den, (players will figure that out later) craggy outcroppings, stalagmites and stalactites, endless pits, dark crevices... basic awful cave.
I know combat and social encounters, but non combat activities I need help with.
What could I use that would fit the setting and you think players may enjoy?
I've thought of traps and a few other environmental things, but none of the ideas have excited me.
Are you more looking for in-character team building, or are you talking about getting the players together, not the characters?
Because, for a 1-shot, either can be hard. For the characters, I wouldn't do it through an encounter. I'd tell the players these characters have known each other and been adventuring together for some time now, and leave the rest to their imagination. You won't have a lot of time to start exploring motivations and such, so just tell them what theirs's are, and let them meet you part way.
For getting the players together, assuming they don't know each other, well, that's just some luck and knowledge of the personalities in having the right mix of people who get along.
Something I read that was cool for getting the characters to interact more was to have each of them write out 3 true positive rumors about the character, 1 false rumor about the character, and 1 true negative rumor about the character, each on a separate card with the name of the character on it. Then shuffle up all of the cards and randomly deal them out to the players, and that's what they know about each other when the game starts... most of it is true, but because there's one false thing about each character, no one knows for certain how much of the information they have is correct.
