This is plagiarized for personal use only. I changed it up a bit and added some randomness. I'm going to have my players make these random rolls tomorrow, and use them each time a character goes in. The weapon, surface, and other elements will change each time a new character goes in, and the enemy will be leveled for difficulty.
My party will be traveling through the forest tomorrow for a day and a half. I am going to give this puzzle a try. I think I first came across it on wallydm, or maybe tasha's (IDR).
This quest will continue until the beast in the other plane is defeated or the characters are all dead. If all of the characters die in the other plane, they will all wake, standing where they were when the took the weapon, and the scene will vanish, along with the reward.
Upon completion, the humanoid vanishes, the fire and spit become real, as does the last weapon used in battle. There may be more to the reward. I haven't figured that out yet.
ROLLS
<distance 10d10>
<distance 10d10 plus distance>
<weapon or an item>
<surface>
<enemy type>
<animal>
<humanoid>
A <humanoid> sits on a log by the campfire
He notices all of you <even the hidden>, but pays no attention to you
The look on his face is somber
He does not speak and the look on his face is unchanging
He is holding a <weapon> across his lap
There is an incorporeal <animal> roasting over the fire, which also seems unreal. The spit is turning itself.
<hint> a scroll ls resting at his feet, but you can not seem to grab it
<detect magic> reveals a Divination spell stored in the scroll
<identify> identifies the scroll of <detect thoughts>
<detect thoughts> When you cast this spell, the <humanoids> expression changes, and he looks at you specifically
He needs your help.
He is trying to complete his journey to the other side, but is unable.
His failure has left him stranded, neither living nor dead.
He stands and approaches you, handing you the <weapon> and you are immediately cast into another plane
You appear on a <distance +distance> disc made completely of <surface>
The <weapon> becomes real in your hand as you see a <enemy> materialize in front of you <distance> away.
There's no point in rolling initiative. The <enemy> has a dexterity of <dex+> and will attack <in order>
The party watches as <character> goes as stiff as a board, and their eyes go white. The <humanoid> sits down again, a look of sorrow and longing on his face
Character death
Your mind exits your incorporeal form and you watch as it falls to the ground. In a whisp of black and white, you transport back to the camp, your friends all standing there.
The rest of the party watches, as <character's> essence appears before you in incorporeal form, holding <weapon>
<hint> the <humanoid> looks at the incorporeal character, and speaks. Someone else must complete the task or you will end up like me, unable to continue your journey.
