All my PCs use dndbeyond because that's where I've purchased all my resources, and have content sharing. I want to have 2 similar but different maps set up, but not actually change the map. Essentially, in this combat, there is going to be some sort of earthquake or something that breaks the ground and causes a rift or chasm in the ground. So the map is essentially the same, but now with a giant hole.
In Roll20, I'd do this by just having both maps there, and leaving the post-earthquake map in the gm level until it happens. I can't just use Roll20 (half my players use an iphone or ipad to play which also makes using 2 different apps for them annoying), or I would.
I realize i could draw a line on the map when it happens, but that looks like trash and was hoping someone had a solution or ideas to help with this. Perhaps there is a way to do this, and I'm blind/ just missing it.
i am unfortunately not super familiar with DND beyond, but you may be able to create a creature and place it on the battlefield?? the creature would just be a circle and look like a hole, and you could maybe make it like, grapple anything that stands on it? idk but it might work. like i said i don't know dnd beyond well :(
It is a far superior option than maps for one simple reason: extensions. There is a lively group of extension developers who are creating all sorts of different extensions that work really well. It offers dynamic maps, layers, dynamic fog of war, lighting, weather FX, all as standard now! On top of this, a dev by the name of Battle-System has a load of plugins that make the platform so much better again including seeing the D&D Beyond Character sheet from Owlbear, initiative and combat tracking, dicerolling, status markers, and a even character sheets. Owlbear is more system agnostic than even Roll20 is.
Here's the thing though - Owlbear is built by two devs and a small team. Battle-System is a single person. And with incredibly limited resources they've produced and refined their system in less time that it took D&D Beyond to develop maps to its current laughable state. It works across platforms and browsers, working on Tablets, Phones, and Computers. I've even seen someone access it through an Xbox. Though it does rely on the browser cache and some local storage.
In all seriousness, D&D Beyond 'Maps' just isn't worth the time of day. I use Heroforge, or Token Stamp to create tokens for monsters as and when I need them, and Inkarnate (or right-click, save as images from books I own copies for) for maps images.
