I have been running the Tyranny of Dragons campaign for a while now, and we are closing in on the end. The party has decided it wants to expand their allies by adding in some people from their backstories and filler content I added. So with all the allies combined, I want to make a grand finale, but I am struggling to decide how. I am ok if it is ~3 sessions to complete it, the first being the large scale battle, the second being infiltrating the Well of Dragons, and the third being the final battle with Tiamat. I want it to be a huge battle with multiple fights, but idk how to go about the characters resting. Like maybe they will be able to get a short rest off, but they will not be able to get any sort of long rest off, and with how much their already is, they will get shredded by Tiamat. My question is, what cool ideas could I add into the sessions and how can I go about not overdoing it and causing a TPK. I will take any ideas for this and would also like to hear how others ran it. We still have around a month before the final chapter.
If you want a successive 3 or so fights, perhaps there could be a timed event, where the whole party is healed (spell slots included.) You could do this by having some sort of heavenly chime that they discover where the fighting will be taking place in, or maybe one of the side characters is a healer and uses the in between time to make some sort of remedy. The problem with the latter would be why don't we just make a bunch of these. But that could be solved by having special materials that would only be found in these circumstances. I've never actually played this campaign, but If it has to do with dragons, then maybe you need a specific scale of a dragon that you managed to loot after the fighting. Perhaps something shed by Tiamat herself. Of course these are just some ideas. As someone who hasn't actually played this specific battle I have no idea if they are good ones.
