I'm writing a campaign for my players and it is my first time as a GM. Their town is about to be overrun by an army of undead and they need to travel north to seek out reinforcements LOTR return of the king style. Please, because I literally need help making them "run" (as in fast) I can only find resources on "running a campaign".
Just put them on a timeline. Tell them they have X days to get back with help or bad things will happen. Follow through if they fail. Give them options to find allies and assign day costs for those choices.

"The mongoose blew out its candle and was asleep in bed before the room went dark." —Llanowar fable
If you need to make them do things in a certain time limit, literally making timed events can help speed things up. You can get sand timers that look fantastic and keep accurate time at hobby Lobby, and once they do the specific something that "triggers" it, tell them they have x amount of time to get out of there before the undead army shows up, or Mr. Greg the all important NPC, dies. You can give them two or three rotations of the timer or just one, but the visual aspect of the time running out in front of them can help give the urgent mood you are looking for. If this is a long term race for reinforcements, just split it out into mini events and have a kitchen timer that you add to or take away from as the army approaches. Plus, the looks on the players faces when you pull out the sand timer with no explanation is EPIC! The pressure of time as well as the knowledge that you don't know what's going to happen when time runs out is invigorating. My players really liked it when I did it!
Hope this helps!
