Hey all, greatly appreciated the help with class countering, but now I've got a different problem and it's mostly a problem of too many ideas/inspirations. For my upcoming game, it's going to be in West Marches style so scheduling will be more friendly, and I've already got a set of villains cooked up for the individual story arcs, but I want a way to tie things together should the game go on for a while. Some kind of ultimate villain or something. The world is a modified version of the Forgotten Realms (primarily takes place in the Hordelands but we'll go elsewhere), and I'm wondering two things:
- Can pre-existing villains be used divorced from their sources, like using Acererak and not running the Tombs of Horror or Annihilation, or The Frostmaiden without Icewind Dale for a couple examples.
- Ideas for a villain concept that can be used to tie together disparate adventures that will only really have winks and nods as acknowledgement of the other goings-on in the world.
*Addendum to the pre-existing villains bit, I have slipped adventure modules into past games, I just don't think that if I did want to use the abovementioned Lich or Goddess I'd run the entire module about them in the interest of pacing and time.
Makes sense, saves the pressure of having to think up entire ancient lineages and backstories. I specifically mentioned Acererak because he seems like an interesting character, and I'm toying with having him be the final villain, but I don't know how I could do that due to how tied he is to his Tombs. I just think with how a lot of bosses I have planned are tied to some kind of undeath it would be interesting to have an undead big bad.

Just take what you know of his lore and personality, adapt what you need to to fit your world, use his stat block when applicable, and boom, he's in your world.
It's one of those things you as a DM can simply wave your hand and do. Can you put Acerak in your world? Boom, there he is. He's in your world now.
One thing you could ever do is port in the Tomb of Annihilation into your world as a location (don't need to run the whole adventure, just use the location), and have it be the place Acerak operates from. OR you could just un-tie him from the Tombs and give him another HQ.

Look forward to hearing ideas!

I will often pull things from adventures and file the serial numbers off, there's no reason you can't do the same with villains!
