So I run a 6 man dragon heist game tuesday nights, and a 6 man homebrew one Thursday nights. The games are a blast and the highlight of my week sometimes. However the problem is it has dwarfed everything else. A lot of video games and such are kinda meh now and lately I find I just want to DM more D&D. A great problem to have I imagine but I've run 3 campaigns a week before and it was a lot with all the prep and such. But 2 isnt enough.
How do you get your D&D fix throughout the week? I'd jump in and sub for a DM if someone needed me to once and a while but the campaign life doesn't lend itself to allowing other DMs in your game. I've tried west marches style games but they tend to be very broken. Adventure league DMing seemed interesting but I would only do it occasionally and my understanding is that's another commitment type of thing. I'd even play in a game but yet again, would require commitment.
How can one get their DMing Fix and meet new players and enjoy a campaign setting etc... with the flexibility of a one or two shot. (DMing or Playing really, I just prefer DMing.)
I get my DM fix during my downtime by homebrewing, chatting and getting inspiration on these forums, polishing my upcoming sessions, and since my party is about to finish up their first story arc, I'm working hard on building and tweaking the larger picture for the second story arc, which I'm roughly guessing will take the players up through level 10.
I'm like Devin. One week I play and the next week I DM. Most of my down time goes into prepping my own campaign. Homebrewing elements. Weaving in more details and just increasing the experience for the players. Doing research on various things. For example my players want to harvest, milk creatures and craft stuff. So I'm doing A LOT of reading up on real life artisans, poisons, alchemy etc. Then work on my own crafting system and things they can make with what they harvested. Which made me stumble on 2e stuff where blood of certain monsters can be used to prevent teleportation, misty stepping etc. That is really nice to add.
This way I can add more depth and detail to elements of content. Same for anything else that comes up. It takes up so much time I hardly have time to do anything else during the week. Let alone DM more campaigns, which was originally the plan, but I dropped that...since I just can't add the depth and experience that I'd want. Instead of DM'ing more campaigns...spend more time to make that 1 campaign better by using the "down time".
While working on my campaigns I occasionally have Critical Role, Highrollers, Matt Colville's campaign in the background. They're fun and occasionally give inspiration for new mechanics and elements. Same for watching occasional Youtube vids from WASD20, WebDM to become better overall.
Talking with other D&D players helps me get that fix. But playing Skyrim as one of my characters has also helped in the past. I played the whole game thinking "What would Drizzt do?" Added a whole new level to the game for me! Might be worth a shot.
