My wife is a Plumber. In pretty much every game she plays in she will eventually seek out an NPC to develop a relationship with. She often wants to either have her PC have children or "adopt" a moppet or two as well. In our first 3.x campaign she eventually retired her PC to look after the family. Her NPC husband continued his quasi-adventuring life until even he had to to settle down as the ruler of the local area. I have many other variations on this as well. My advice again is to allow the Players what they want, keep a close eye on table spotlight, and even give the role of NPC minder to someone else if that is okay with them.
As to how to handle the adventuring life, it is going to be hard if the PCs are limited to nonmagical travel in a large area. My home game is focused on the Forgotten Realms in the areas south of Baldur's Gate to the Cloudpeaks and East to the Greenfields. It is small enough that the PCs can be home quickly if they want. Other games, which were more world traveling had portals or helms of teleportation come in real handy just to keep the home fires burning.
Just call me Tyler Durden ( or Joe, if you want to be the flamboyant one ) :D
I guess this really boils down to gauging ( and/or perhaps asking ) how the other players are with that occurring in game. And that includes you. It's one thing to flirt with your wife - it's another to do so ( even indirectly ) with an audience watching closely :)
If everyone is comfortable with it, then it's just another facet of managing the spotlight: are you taking too much time concentrating on this one character. Are people getting bored and doodling during these scenes, etc.
The fact that it is romance RP'ing is almost irrelevant at that point.
At least you don't have the possible complications that Matt Mercer does in Critical Role - with your wife's character flirting with / engaging in a long-term character-to-character romantic relationship with a different Player's character.
