Hello I'm a new dm and we are playing the starter kit. My players just did the ruins of thundertree and they want to go to Mountain hotenow to found out what cause the ash zombie. Since this will be my frist place that is not in the book I'm not sure what to plan.
How close to official lore do you want to be? Are they going now or later after they find the Rockseekers and finish LMoP? I ask because the are a couple adventure modules you could use or homebrew your own.
General history is that Hotenow erupted when an adventure party found Gauntlgrym and in going through the fortress a powerful primordial caused the eruption. LMoP states that the eruption caused the ash zombies and the strange magic in the area, but not many other official sources go into details on that. The eruption happened on both the material plane and the shadowfell, and created issues in that regard, so magic side effects could be possible.
I recommend looking at the Forgotten Realms wiki to give a high level view of Hotenow and the general history.
They are going now. And as close to the official lore. They are only level 3 right now. And I'm trying now to kill then witch the young green dragon did but I change it. I'm trying not to kill then until they at get to level 5.
If you have it or want to pick it up the Sunless Citadel (Tales from the Yawning Portal) fits well with LMoP. It's easily set at the base of the volcano and has Cult of the Dragon ties as well. It's for level 1-3, but you can easily change monster types or numbers to challenge higher levels. Another option is White Plume Mountain (also TFtYP) although it would need to be scaled back since it is for 8th level. You could always homebrew a mini adventure as well, but if you want an easy outline that you can modify for your needs these work well.
For either one, I would recommend adding in something towards the end, like a research lab that details the zombies. Could be a necromancer came there years ago and used new magic to create the ash versions of the zombies. He tapped into forces he couldn't control left over from the eruption and created the dark magic that surrounds the town. Any variation to that will help satisfy their curiosity.

Hope that helps.
