Hey guys, im looking for some help setting up a kind of arena free for all thing with the d10000 table. The idea is that everyone participating will have a bag of holding with 10000 wand of wonders in it and every time they pull out a wand it would have a random effect from the d10000 table. The PCs would duke it out for the top spot in the leaderboards.
Characters would start at lvl 5 i think and can gain experience to level up by placing in 1st, 2nd, 3rd and so on in the arena.
I was thinking of having the maps be on random planes/terrain each time we would play so it isnt repetitive. I would have some random weapons scattered about most likely so wands aren't the only real way to do damage. Im not sure, however, what kind of weapon rarities i would place on the map.
Also what kind of rules should i have in place for this kind of thing? What do you guys think so far? Any helpful criticism is appreciated of course!
I think this is a very cool idea in theory, especially with the random wand assortment, but in my experience arena settings have been difficult to make interesting. Unless the players are working as a group, youll probably end up focused on one character at a time, leaving the other players bored.
Perhaps other DMs have had more success with what you are suggesting. My recommendation would be to try and brainstorm ways to keep all the players engaged during the events of the arena even when their character isnt focused on. Or, to make sure you dont get bogged down on one player who wants to make 1000 different checks, and to add to the high pace action of it, maybe experiment with having players take their turns with a real life time limit

If every character only gets a random effect wand of wonder, there doesn't seem to be much player control. Just people flicking wands and each other until somebody gets lucky, no tactics involved.
