I'm looking for a little advise for a one-shot that I have planned. I've managed to plan the majority of the session out but I'm just struggling with the final encounter.
I'll be running the session with 5/6 level 12 characters (a rogue/monk, rogue, bard, and 2 others not yet confirmed).
I'm planning to pit them against a beholder but comparing the challenge rating VS the party level, this will be a rather easy encounter for the experienced party.
Do any of you amazing people have any creative and good ways to buff the encounter to create a challenging encounter for veteran players?
I was thinking about buffing the beholder up by giving him max HP and having magical artifacts located in the room which beef his AC whilst active. The players can then deactivate/destroy them to lower the beholders AC to give them a better chance.
I'm trying to think of something else to make this feel slightly different so I was looking for suggestions. :)
If your set on a beholder why not enhance it? Imagine some magic rings placed around it's eye stalks. Or make it a staged boss encounter, they defeat the first beholder only for a up and coming Hive Mother to appear, angered at killing her thrall.
Does the beholder have minions, or a trap set up within it's lair (they are paranoid) to help even the odds out?
The idea of a magical ring swiss army knife beholder in a lair filled with traps and servants might be interesting and even the playing field.

Yeah, aim for a higher class of beholder like a death tyrant.
