Im planning to run a a game face to face, and I want to use some kind of digital technology to do the maps (Digital Tabletop). I'm looking for something that allow me to show the maps partially and as the player explore I can reveal the parts of the maps. Something like the dynamic lighting that Roll20 have. I'm looking for something free. Any suggestions?
Does your table have a massive screen? Just use a player view of the map from Roll20 or a similar source. If it's all physical, then it would depend on how it's physical.
If it's pen and paper (or something akin to it.) Use Construction paper as a form of "Fog of War" and just leave small marks on the board to remind yourself to place miniutures on the board there.
If it is a built up model then use some cloth to cover the hidden portions or just hide the minis and place them down as the players find them. (Especially useful if the players already have a map, though hidden areas will be harder to keep from being metagamed.
Thinking on it, if you could somehow rig a projector of some kind over a table (SAFELY) that you could run digitally, you would just need the table covered in the proper cloth to hold the projection. Lets you dim the lights and set a mood for the rest of the table as well.
Im planning to use an screen. Is Roll20 free service good enough for what I need or should I get a paid subscription? I really don't need the dynamic lighting, but I would like to be able to control what my players are able to see at the time
I posted this in another forum, but here's what I'm doing:
I just finished building this gaming table. I'm using Fantasy Grounds for my VTT. I will manage the monsters and npc's as tokens, while the players will use real mini's on the TV screen. Going to be nice switching maps with a few clicks VS what I was doing before: printing.
We are kicking off Dungeon of the Mad Mage next week. I will be keeping everything within Fantasy Grounds. Notes, maps, images, etc.
Maptool is free and can do both fog of war and dynamic lighting. I've used both maptool and roll20 for in person gaming sessions. For either one, you can either:
1. Have a second screen/monitor hooked up to your computer. You will display the "player view" map on the secondary screen, and the "gm view" will be on the main screen. (This is needed to control the fog of war reveals)
2. Have a player use their computer to show the "player view" map. This allows them to control a PC token, map movement, etc. This is my preferred way of doing it because it alleviates having to go back and forth between the GM and player maps.

Roll20 free has fog of war, yes, but not dynamic lighting.

Thank you guys for the help
