At the risk of playing a cliche, some unreliable "pets" might be fiends of some form, particularly Yugoloths and Demons. A Yugoloth might make for an interesting way to string a couple of campaigns together, seeing as to the fact that they simply work for the highest bidder, thus meaning that they could have been hired later on to act as a way of eliminating the wizard as mentioned. However, if you're going for pets, demons normally fit that definition more, seeing as to the fact that they come across as mindless brutes. One way to do it is that demons are often controlled via their true name or other binding magic. However, they're willing to turn at any time, and would thus be willing to snap and deal with any patrons that they feel aren't serving their purpose, or are directly dangerous, or are just.... annoying. Hope that helps.
I'd say try to select creatures that mesh with the villain's goals or aesthetic. For instance, a wizard trying to open a portal to a Demon Lord's fortress will most certainly have demonic allies (though a worshiper of Orcus might pack the room a horde of ghouls or protect itself with a duo of bodaks).
If you're certain that you want draconic beings to serve your evil wizard, I'd say guard drakes, wyverns, or even dragonborn NPCs make for great allies. Most true dragons are too caught up in their own schemes and desires to ever serve another creature, though green dragons may play pretend for a few days.
thanks everyone , gave me some great ideas.. think I will go for 2 dragons was gonna say 2 black dragons at different ages. But after being reminded about the Green Dragon ideals I think I will go for Young Adult and a baby hehe. At the 2nd round of combat maybe the 3rd they will turn on the wizard and completely wipe him out. I am mainly running from Players Handbook and Monster Manuel at moment with the odd free stat book I found on this site.

im running a trilogy of quests and the final, final boss is an Evil Wizard
but he is going to have pets that in the end turn on him, but need advice . will these creatures work together or is it just a complete mess.
Wyvern and Black Dragon (not picked age yet)
or 2 Wyverns
I would use two of the same over the mix.
something to consider, dragons are human level intelligence.
