So, I wanted to homebrew a higher lvl version of the Enlarge/Reduce spell. Many other spells- even utility spells- have ways they scale up with higher lvl spell slots in the RAW. And what spell is more deserving of some... ah.. "scaling up?"
So, I kept it fairly simple. It scales only twice. It's a 2nd level spell, which is accessible at low levels. So, I designed another version to be cast with a 5th lvl slot for mid-tier gameplay, and a third version to be cast with an 8th lvl slot for high-tier gameplay.
Basically, the size at lvl 2 doubles. So at 5th lvl, I quadrupled it, and at 8th lvl, it octuples. Sticking with the Enlarge for just now, that means that at 5th lvl, you can grow an object or creature 4 times it's size (weight also adjusting appropriately). It's size goes up 2 categories (from medium, past large into huge, e.g.) Attacks add 1d8, instead of 1d4. At 8th lvl, things get a little crazy. A medium creature would grow to 8× their current size & be considered colossal. The attack bonus turns into 2d8. The effort to maintain this lvl of power reduces the duration to 30 sec of concentration @ 5th and 8th lvl, down from 1 min at lvl 2.
The Reduce portion also scales similarly, however, to accommodate the extra small sizes possible, I created 2 new size categories: insectoid & microscopic. So, a Small creature reduced by the lvl 5 version would bypass Tiny and go to Insectoid. At 8th lvl, Microscopic. The dmg die penalties are reflective of those stated above. Movement speeds also get a little wonky. I put insectoid movement at 5'/round, which is pretty generous I think. But for microscopic? 1'/round. (Also generous. But to reduce speed even further could bog down game play. Also it would render some of the utility moot, because micro creatures couldNt move in the 30 sec duration. As is, they only get 6' in 30 sec.)
I figured this type of scaling would keep this spell relevant through all tiers of gameplay and also give some fun utility options (like growing a quarterstaff into a bridge, e.g., but one that only lasts 30 sec, so hurry!)
