Fellow homebrewers! I'll keep this simple. I've been watching a lot of Baki Hanma and want a beefcake martial artist like those on the show. My solution: Any mention of Dex in the Monk Handbook automatically changes to Str (saving throws to Str & Wis)
Mechanically i think this would change essentially nothing about the Monk or how they operate, and if anything would make them a little weaker because of the whole Str vs. Dex debacle.
Go for it. Like you said, generally Dex is considered better than Strength, so you wouldn't be gaining a whole lot. The only possible problem I can think of is being a better multiclass for certain classes, but such classes are probably better of with heavy armor anyways.

Look at what you've done. You spoiled it. You have nobody to blame but yourself. Go sit and think about your actions.
Don't be mean. Rudeness is a vicious cycle, and it has to stop somewhere. Exceptions for things that are funny. Go to the current Competition of the Finest 'Brews! It's a cool place where cool people make cool things.
How I'm posting based on text formatting: Mod Hat Off - Mod Hat Also Off (I'm not a mod)
Main issue could be multiclassing with Barbarian, but as both classes need Dex for unarmoured defence, and the majority of dex things are "you may use in place of Strength" it's no different to using RAW and making a monk with high strength anyway! A monk with Str 20 can still use it to punch!
@ThorukDuckSlayer I see what you're saying about the multiclass, because if barbarians gained armor from strength that would be an insane improvement. But if the class is played with no multiclassing allowed i guess its all good 🤷♂️
I love imagining the comical aspect of using 'deflect missiles' with Str instead of Dex. Like what does he do? Flex real hard in that one spot to deflect it, and then spike it like a volleyball toward the target?? I'm really looking forward to this lol.
I was thinking about this very topic while watching Boxing. When most people think martial arts, they think of East Asian arts, like Kung Fu, Karate, Tae Kwon Do, etc. Plenty of different martial arts styles are definitely Dexterity-based, as represented there and even in other regions. Capoeira comes to mind for sure. But boxing is a martial art as well, and while Dexterity is inarguably a part of it, it's far more Strength-based than Dexterity. I've been thinking about how you can change the Monk class to represent this. The biggest issue, as mentioned before, is the Dexterity vs Strength problem. Strength vs Dexterity doesn't affect the attacks so much as the defense. That's where the big crux of the problem is. Do you want to get hit more often while gaining nothing in damage? No, of course not. Who would? So, how to make up that disparity? It's the damage. Think about to the classic debate. Prime Mike Tyson vs Prime Bruce Lee (or Jet Li, or whoever you want to throw in instead) is a LONG-debated topic where most people agree that one punch landing from Tyson and the more dextrous (though by no means weak) fighter is DONE! So, that's what the change should be. The Dex based fighter loses nothing, but the Strength-based fighter gains to make up for the fact that they will be getting hit harder. They're trading getting hit more for hitting harder. Now, how to translate that into the game? Monks using Strength to attack gain double their bonus for damage. Not their attack, it doesn't make them more accurate, but they've honed their bodies to hit HARD. They still have the Dex deficit, and this has an added advantage over Fighters or Barbarians, or hell even a weird Wizard taking Tavern Brawler. It doesn't increase their damage dice, which would affect both, and if using Dex for the attack, you cannot gain that advantage. Boxers hit HARD. Let them hit hard. Thoughts?
