So, basically a simple question: I've made a sword that let's the wielder burn hitdice to heal in combat as a bonus action. That's it. Only limitation is one per round, as long as you have hitdice remaining. Obviously, that makes it pretty damned good for tanking.
The question is: How powerful is this? What tier would you place it in?
Also, it's entirely possible this exact sword already exists - I wouldn't know, I don't have access to stuff =)

Blanket disclaimer: I only ever state opinion. But I can sound terribly dogmatic - so if you feel I'm trying to tell you what to think, I'm really not, I swear. I'm telling you what I think, that's all.
Cool, thanks - now I just need a way to explain to my players why the guy who dropped the weapon didn't seem to use it =)
Actually, that's because he was a dual wielder. But still, it kinda looks weird, right? 'This guy could heal himself every round, why ever did he die without doing it even once?' Well, because he was an arrogant, overconfident bastard =)

Or the NPC was aware and attuned to it, but was reluctant to use the healing power being afraid that the weapon would slowly suck some of its life force.

You could always add a curse to it that something bad happens to the wielder if they expend their last Hit Die

Or just say he had used it earlier in the day and had no hit dice left to use. Maybe he fell in a trap or something. Or just let him use it 1 or 2 times. Rolling hit dice for hp is good, but at 1/round he’s not going to out heal the damage from a party focusing fire.

Yea, but it feels like an obvious cop-out. I'd rather just admit I forgot =)
Honestly, it’s entirely possible the group won’t notice that he hadn’t used the feature; I wouldn’t overthink needing an explanation for it.
I know I'm flogging myself for no really good reason. I have a sort of uneven skill distribution as a GM - I'm really good at storytelling, and really crap at anything crunchy - so I feel guilty about that. In particular because it seems everyone playing PbP wants the crunchy bits and skips over the story QQ

When an NPC has a magic item that i know have good chance ending up in the party's hand, i usually like to have the carrier use it in a not so subtle way so that they all know this enemy has a magic item, it often change how they fight, making them look forward to something more because it urge them to take it back, now knowing at least one of it's power(s).
In the case of a healing weapon for example, i would have made the NPC touch his wounds with the weapon to close them back.

To me such magic weapon would be rare or very rare if +1
Game element that rely on Hit Dice expenditure are somewhat rare and underused in my opinion. I don't know of any magic weapon that do such thing.

If the weapon require attunement, the previous welder may not have done so yet or not have even known it was magical.

And who doesn't enjoy a good curse? No one! (disclaimer: except, perhaps, the one getting cursed).
That's a wonderful idea =)
