Warrior of the Spirit is my take on reimagining the old Astral Self monk from 5e into something that feels more in line with the 2024 design philosophy. Instead of summoning spectral arms around yourself, you manifest your own spirit as a physical companion that fights alongside you. It isn't a familiar. It's literally an extension of your own soul. My goal with the subclass was to create a true companion monk without breaking the action economy. The spirit isn't meant to be a second player character. It supports your turn rather than taking one of its own. The subclass focuses on battlefield control, positioning, protection, and teamwork instead of just increasing damage. By higher levels, it feels like you're controlling two bodies with one mind, allowing you to threaten different parts of the battlefield while still remaining engaged in the fight yourself.
Overall, I wanted it to capture the fantasy of a monk whose spirit has become so disciplined that it can physically manifest and fight beside them, while staying balanced alongside the official 2024 monk subclasses. Let me know what you think! Warrior of the Spirit Homebrew Subclass
Sounds cool. I left you a comment. Might of been a bit more negative than I meant to come off at first but I think I can help you build a better version.
Thank you! It actually got some gears turning in my head about what direction to take. I appreciate the feed back!
I'll be updating this subclass often, but I had a goal of creating 1 subclass for each class until I feel like they could potentially be published in 5.5e. Your feedback actually really helped and maybe if I write any other subclasses, you could help too!
Version 3.0 includes several balance adjustments and redesigns aimed at making the companion feel more cohesive, rewarding, and intuitive to play.
Changes
Manifest Spirit
Resummoning your spirit after it is reduced to 0 Hit Points now requires 1 minute instead of a Magic Action. This change gives defeating the spirit more meaningful counterplay while preserving the spirit's long-term utility.
Spirit Companion
Updated the spirit's Hit Points and Hit Dice to better align with the Monk class's progression and create a more cohesive companion design.
Healing Touch
Healing Touch has been redesigned to expend the spirit's Hit Dice, creating a limited pool of healing that scales naturally with level and encourages more strategic resource management.
Spiritual Ascension (Level 11)
This feature has been completely redesigned to better complement the spirit's existing abilities. Each action in the spirit's stat block now receives a passive enhancement, while also gaining a Focus Point option that further empowers that ability when needed. This creates more meaningful choices each turn instead of centering the feature around only Stunning Strike.
Perfect Manifestation (Level 17)
The capstone has been completely redesigned. Instead of focusing on a single burst-healing effect, it now grants several permanent benefits while your spirit is manifested, emphasizing the fantasy of you and your spirit fighting as one while providing greater tactical flexibility and synergy.
