Well, as the title implies, I'm having a little trouble with setting up my new campaign. I based the core design of the adventure on a sci-fi book series, converted to a Forgotten Realms adventure. Converting some properties of creatures, however, while still keeping things "balanced" is somewhat difficoult. The creatures in question are basicallya ball of writhing, color changing, semi-transparent tentacles and claws, capable of mass destruction. They are at about CR15. These creatures are semi-sentient, and are used as weapons, after being bound to a wielder. My problem however, is that in the books these creatures feed on liquid hydrogen solely, through some cold-fusion reaction. That is something I can not translate to a fantasy environment. In the campaign, they should require an energy source similar in rarity and price to liquid hydrogen in a tech setting, meaning something that can not be acquired without proper funding and supply routes, and is certainly problematic to get your hands on in the wilds, but still available enough, so thtat the players can use their weapon creatures. Thanks in advance for any ideas!
Thank you very much! I suppose it should have been a somewhat obvious choice. I think I'll go this route, and try to get a precise energy consumption rate after all the abilities are done and ready. Thanks for the help!

To paraphrase Arthur Clarke, tech = magic, magic = tech. It needs to eat some form of magic.
Decide which of these it eats:
It should also like to consumable magic items. Maybe a consumable feeds it for a day, a permanent a month.
