I give magical items much more regularly than most people, but in return they don't last forever.
You have three repair slots per item, once every long rest you roll to perform routine repairs DC:11 you lose or gain a slot for failing/passing your repair check. Once you lose the third slot, next time you roll, that item could be a goner.
You can take an item to a specialist in that items field and pay for them to repair it (prices are very steep) or you can trade other magical items for repairs.
You can also "store" an item in your pack at a long rest, whereby you wrap it carefully in oiled cloth and tuck it safely out of the way in your bag. This item doesn't need to be repaired but you also can't benefit from it in any way, if you get it out, you'll have to repair it again.
This allows players to have more choice about what items fit their play character the best and it's always good to see players be forced between keeping one of two magical items that they like.
If you and your players like it then use it. To me it doesn't make sense. Magic items are just that: magic. They should be resistant, if not immune, to wear and tear. How do you repair a magic item without magic? This rule would make more sense for upkeep of regular armour and weapons.
