We don't fear death. But we don't submit to it either.
Not then, not now.
Blood pooling through my fingers, frantically scraping at the dirt in the road.
Life fading away, just one image left in my head.
It stares at me. It watches me from behind the gag. But breaking through are other voices.
Wake up, Shi. Wake up. See what is before you, really and truly. Shake off the draw of rest.
WE DON'T FEAR DEATH.
WE FIGHT IT.
WE FIGHT BACK NO MATTER WHAT IT COSTS.
EVEN IF IT COSTS US.
WAKE UP AND FIGHT.
Shi's eyes suddenly narrow, their irises flaring a pale, icy blue, and the changeling opens her mouth and SCREAMS at Mictena, dozens of voices overlapping over each other as a dark blue orb flies out from her chest and into Corinne, who feels confidence swell through her limbs as a soft whisper, too distant to make out but sounding a hell of a lot like Shi's voice, weaves its way through the dhampir's head.

As the last obstacle fades behind and the Dead Roads continue ahead, a shimmer ripples through the sturdy ground. Cobbles and dust roil and twist together into a tall, thin figure swathed in a patchwork traveling cloak. Beneath the cloak’s hood, the figure’s raven-like head, obsidian feathers, and eyes that gleam like pale marbles are visible. The figure extends a taloned hand, and all at once, details of the journey past— the way stations, the garden, the Boneyard itself—all seem reflected in the mirrorlike surface of the creature’s eyes. An androgynous voice echoes from within your own chest. “Hail and well met, travelers. Your journey has been a wearying one, but it ends now. I will usher you to the home you seek.” The figure extends a hand, and the road seems to slide along quietly underfoot at an effortless pace

A breath of relief escapes Morticia seeing her shot finish Mictena for good. "I wish we could've talked it out..."She murmurs sadly, stowing away her bow. The rogue heads over to where her body was, carefully picking up the stone, examining it between her fingertips. After a moment, she approaches Shi and offers them the stone with a sheepish smile. "I think you should have this."
Morticia nearly jumps out of her skin at the sound of the unfamiliar voice, turning swiftly to look at the figure it had been emitted from. As Mallet speaks to it, Morticia quietly shuffles to the back, yet listens intently to the raven's answer.

The first beams of sunlight in what seems a lifetime arc from the horizon. The Dead Roads ahead begins to shift out of focus in contrast to the morning sun. The masked figure turns back but pauses. “What has been done to you has never before been done in this creation. I can sense more of these deep wounds in the Boneyard and will seek them out. Perhaps I will send these same confused souls to you. But what you are and why you are I cannot answer. I make this request: learn this thing, that I may know it, too. Safe journeys, travelers.”

Book Two- Eulogy for Roslar's Coffer
4719 AR-Hours Before The Destruction of Roslar's Coffer
It's late at night and Mayor Grive is seeing her last visitor of the day before she returns home to call it a night. The visitor is a tall, thin individual whose identity is impossible to decipher as they are wearing a red cloak and a mask that hides their face. "This town is not safe. I do not yet know what the danger is or when it will befall this town, but it is in danger." The individual says, speaking in a woman's voice, with a lilted accent that gives away the fact that woman isn't from Lastwall. "Evil is coming. Prepare for it." And with that, the figure teleports away, leaving Mayor Grive pondering the strange woman's words. Outside of Roslar's Coffer, the strange woman appears on the outskirts of the village. However, Mayor Grive will have only seconds to contemplate what she was told, as suddenly a light erupts from the center of Roslar's Coffer, rapidly engulfing the entire town in radiant energy. Even at the outskirts of town, the mysterious woman only has seconds before she is engulfed by this energy as well. "Unfortunate. It appears I was too late."
Days Later
A young man with pale skin and clothes that would indicate noble birth passes through a dome of green fog. Following him is a hideous, purple-skinned ghoul that is clad in scale mail with a scythe that bears a haft shaped like a human spine and several cultists with tattered brown robes and long knives. The cultists all wear necklaces bearing the symbol of a gagged skull while the ghoul wears a necklace bearing a fly made to look like a skull, the unholy symbol of Urgathoa. The young man wears no armor and carries no symbol, but it is clear from his demeanor that he is the leader of this band of villains. He conjures a raven familiar and sends it to scout Roslar's Coffer. Through the raven's eyes, the young man can see that the town is almost completely destroyed, its' buildings left in shambles and its' flora and fauna corrupted by undeath. After a few minutes, the familiar returns to its' master, whose eyes regain their color as he stops using the raven's senses. He casts a spell and begins speaking to someone not present.
"The test of the weapon was successful, master. The weapon destroyed the village in its' entirety almost instantly. No survivors."
The young man smiles arrogantly, but deep in the woods, unbeknownst to him, the green-skinned face of a half-orc peers out from carefully made camouflage, defiant and determined to survive.
Now
As you arrive in the Material Plane, you witness the first beams of morning sunlight and feel renewed and refreshed, as though awakening from a long and peaceful slumber (Mechanically, you gain the benefits of a Long Rest), though you return to a world far from what you expected. The sunlight, is an eerie yellowish-green color, but it still illuminates the interior of a mundane wooden stable. Those of you that are from Roslar’s Coffer recognize the building as Freemark’s Livery, located on the outskirts of town, but it is in remarkable disrepair. The smell of rotting hay—and strangely, decomposing fish— lingers among a handful of stalls, their wood splintered in 4 many places. Several discarded saddles and harnesses lie scattered beneath broken pegs and shelves. The large double door that would be the livery’s entrance hangs limply on hinges barely affixed to cracked wood.
