Seeing the frog appearing to get ready to turn and dive away, Brandon moves his attention to the fight unfolding on the south bank. The elvish threats fall on deaf ears, Brandon's blood is up and the time for talk is past. Dark shadows and energy course through his sword as he uses it to channel his Eldritch Blast as he casts at the lead elf at the far end of the plank - the one running his mouth.
Attack: 6 Damage: 6
Following his attack, Brandon crosses the plank and moves to stand directly in front of the lead elf.
He barely finished speaking before falling down from the plank. The world went dark, the sounds became muffled and the water took the place of the air that once surrounded his body. But there was no cold. Not for him. Song and tale of his people told about the goliath being mountain born, resistant to the frigid weather. Now he realized how much truth was in those words and was grateful for it.
As fast as he fell, Kotar rises to the surface, gasping for a lost breath and being found by a frog. The creature tried to go for a bite, only to find itself hit by a pair of daggers thrown by Qidira. She is a good warrior, that one. He thought with newfound respect for the gnome. Sadly he was not the only one to notice her. An elf tried grabbing her while other tried to use her as hostage.
“I have a better idea.” He said preparing to swim to the other side of the plank, only to notice that the hurt frog close to the warlock was likely to move away from battle. He would be more useful in the other bank, and truth be said, part of him wanted to beat those elven bastards. They took first blood from his companions. They owed him blood of their own. With that in mind the fighter turned the entirety of his attention and energy into reaching the other margin. Let’s see you try to grapple me, elf.
Notes:
Kotar uses action to Dash and as many move as it takes to leave the pool. If there is enough movement I would like for him to end 5ft from the three elves, for that sweet melee range.
Qidira sees the elf reaching out to grab her and jinks under his arms, dodging the grapple attempt (this is in response to his actions, this is not Qidira's turn).
Kotar swims as fast as he can to the south bank, reaching it and bursting out of the water like a leaping whale; huge and graceful.
The surviving frog, badly wounded, turns and dives into the depths of the frigid pool (Brandon may make an AOO if he wishes)
As Durnham unleashes his magical salvo he sees that the frog troubling Brandon has gone; the dart aimed for it loops back towards the bats instead, and a dozen of the rodents explode in a beautifully deadly display. The remaining bats scatter and fly away, offering no further threat (OOC I took the liberty of redirecting the third missile, hope this was OK – happy for you to pick a different target)
Brandon’sarcane bolt flies wide and smashes into the cave wall next to the lead elf, melting ice and scattering stone splinters. The elf looks surprised by the violent rebuttal and stares open mouthed at the advancing armoured figure as Brandon dashes across the plank towards him like a deadly acrobat.
(Waiting for Qidira to confirm as requested – let me know if you want to change targets etc. I’m having trouble with Imgur so no map right now, will post when fixed.)
Qidira sees the elf coming at her, remembering this 'game' from the streets. "Not likely!"She shouts at the elf seeing the scimitar heading her way. acrobatics8She rolls East and and back onto her feet with her own Shortsword and shiny new dagger slashing at the scimitar wielding elf and a side swipe to the one to her east(as sneak attack)
Shortsword Attack: 14 Damage: 7
Dagger Attack: 11 Damage: 4
Sneak attack 4(this one directed at the one at the end of the plank unless I'm not able to do so - noted before submitting rolls)
*She ducks to avoid the grapple and pops back up Shortsword and shiny new dagger drawn and swipes at the attacker. Sneak attack same target.
Qidira brings her shortsword up at the elftrying to grapple her and splits him open at the belly; he falls to the floor without a sound, unconscious immediately and dead soon after. Her dagger flies out at the other elf next to her but he steps back at the last minute and she slices nothing but air.
Behind Qidira’s new target, Ressys shimmers back into view. The elf’seyes widen in surprise as the giant firbolg conjures a flame and throws it into him at point-blank range, searing the bandit’s arm (OOC: I moved your target as the first one died, hope that’s OK)
Still reeling from the death of his friend, the burned elfstammers “You’ve done it now! The family will see you all die for this!” he swings his scimitar at Ressys, source of his own pain, while the other surviving elf swings at the advancing Brandon.
Attack on Ressys Attack: 13 Damage: 6
Attack on Brandon Attack: 13 Damage: 6
Both elves miss their targets, swinging wildly. They have lost a great deal of their confidence and seem almost stunned that anyone would dare attack them.
He reached the south bank of the pool and rose from its cold waters, all speed and silent fury. His face was stone cold, his eyes hard and emotionless, like those of a hungry beast staring at its prey. Kotar was ready to kill or be killed.
As the goliath stepped into solid ground Qidira gutted one of the bandits, leading the remaining two to strike with their blades, curved and light. Scimitars, the fighter recognized. A weapon carried by combatants that relied more in speed than in strength. Yet one of them tried to grapple our rogue.
Out of the remaining elves one tried what sounded like a terrible attempt of intimidation just before missing his attack. A fate his companion shared.
“Was that supposed to be an incentive to not kill you?” He asked raising his steel. A bandit was in front of him and another to his side. He could attack either, for sure, but if he moved to where Qidira’s victim stood he could flank one of them with Ressys. “You really should have talked before firing.”
Saying that he advanced, tensing his muscles, taking position in front of Qidira and in the opposite side of Ressys. Flanking the burnt criminal, Kotar unleashed his attack - a vertical slash focused on the enemy’s torso. That would be hardly enough to get the kill, but could, at the very least, be a start and make it easier for his allies. Maybe it could even be a good start.
Notes:
Kotar moves to where the dead elf was standing, flanking the bandit besides Ressys, then uses his Longsword to make an attack against the flanked bandit.

Avoiding the bandit’s attack, Brandon traces a quick pattern in the air with his longsword and ghostly green flames erupt and surround the length of the blade, casting an eerie light on the face of the bandit in front of him. Durnham sets his staff down after releasing his spell and watches the bats spread out and disperse. Damn lucky that time. No more running off down unknown paths, he thinks to himself.
He leans on his staff a moment and takes a deep breath before Kotar’s challenging words brings him back to the moment. The dwarf turns and takes a step to the North so he can see down the tunnel where his companions battle. Again he lifts his staff parallel to the ground pointing the top towards the elf that looks most wounded and speaks in Elvish.
“My friend is correct. You acted impulsively, without thought or knowledge. You attacked those who came to aide and warn you because you made poor assumptions based upon poor ideas and ignorance. That lack of thought and foresight will cost your life!”
With that the top of his staff glows red again and he completes the firebolt cantrip muttering the word “Flambé!” 21 to hit 7 Fire damage.
He lowers the staff when done and mutters to himself. “Damn ignorant wretches.”
Qidira disengages quickly from the battle, seeing her companions engaging the remaining elves, and turns scanning the water for the other giant frog, sword and dagger still out.
Kotar positions himself to flank Elf 1, drawing an Attack of Opportunity from Elf 2: Attack: 9 Damage: 4
The bandit is late in his swing and cuts only the air where Kotar had just been.
Reaching his position, the goliath slashes down at the elfand leave a deep gash down his torso which looks serious, although the bandit still stands.
As the elfstaggers from the grievous blow, a bolt of flame arrives from his right hand side, delivered with unerring accuracy by Durnham from the east cave.
The last surviving attackerlooks for a route to escape and seems to be ready to dive into the frigid waters when Brandoncuts him down, a similar strike to Kotar’s that cuts through leather armour, flesh and bone with ease. The arcane green flame cauterizes the wound and the dead man falls to the ground with a vicious, sealed wound marking his entire front torso.
The sound of battle subsides. The cave falls almost silent, save for the distant screeching of fleeing bats and the soft echo of croaking, much reduced from the volume of before the fight.
With the last elf dead Ressys looks back sadly at the pool of water and the blood within. His ears droop at the knowledge that they had attacked the frogs. "I had hoped we could cross the water without having to hurt the frogs. It saddens me that those wild creatures came to harm." he says with sorrow.
Looking to his companions, "I do not blame you for defending yourselves, and me." he assures the others. "If we cannot harm those who harm us or defend ourselves than we..." He trails off "I had just hoped."
Bending down Ressys brings the torch close to the bodies of the elves and looks to see if he can detect any sign of the sickness that Tulgi had.
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Brandon nods at Ressys “I agree, I had hoped we could pass by without disturbing them. These bandits appear to have trained them in some way to provide protection or warning, I place the blame on their shoulders”
He looks around at the group “Well done, everyone. Is everyone alright, any serious injuries, or are we ready to push on deeper into the cave? ” He sees the blood on Ressys and Qidiria, but can’t determine the nature of their wounds.
Brandon searches the elves to determine what they had in their possession and to see if there are any clues to what group they belong to, if any.
Durnham nods to Ressys in agreement but turns cold and hard eyes upon the bodies of the slain. He had little pity for those who shoot at strangers who offered no threat. But then he sees the blood from the cuts and piercings, and the burns that evidenced his own handiwork, and his face softens and he turns his eyes away from the gore.
He looks at the others to see how they react to the violence they had just inflicted, lingering a bit longer on Brandon. “I’m unhurt. It was a close thing but I was lucky. I owe you all an apology. If I hadn’t fallen in we may have been able to handle this peacefully. Then on top of that I ran into a dark tunnel and caused even more danger with those bats. I will be more cautious from now on.”
”Speaking of the tunnel, we may want to look through it. It might just be full of bat droppings or we might find something useful.”
Kotar checks the bodies for signs of the mystery illness; prominent blue veins are the only known symptom that might be visible now, as slow movement is hard to tell in the dead. Reflecting in that, he realises that the elves seemed to suffer no restriction of movement.
Looking at them now, there is no sign of any malady except for the wounds that killed them. They look young too, although it is hard to age an elf. They could be in their twenties, they could be approaching their first century.
Brandon kneels by the fallen bandits and starts to search the bodies. Aside from their three scimitars and light crossbows he finds a total of 32 bolts, 29 gold pieces, 22 silver pieces and 22 copper pieces.
The human also finds a note which seems to lay out a timetable for duties amongst the cave’s small garrison. Running down the list of names and assignments he discerns that there are ten members of the Uttolot gang operating out of Croaker Cave, including Hulil but not Tulgi. Based on the rota, five members of the gang are in Palebank right now tasked with ‘Finding a cure for the boss; check Pelc’s again’
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
"No signs of the sickness, at least not yet. But the note indicates Hulil is succumbing to it. There may also be more bandits within, maybe a couple." His ears twitch briefly. "Pelc may be in further trouble, I am glad we sent Elro to check on her, he'll be able to handle the bandits. We cannot return until we are finished here."
Seeing the gold the Firbolg does some quick math. "If we are to evenly split that for our efforts it would make for an odd number. I'll take 5 gold pieces as well as 2 silver and 2 copper. That would leave the rest for you to share more evenly. I never have much need for gold anyways except a meal or mead at a tavern now and then. I desire nothing else that is here."
He then wrinkles his nose at the cavern where the bats were and the mention of exploring it. "I have no desire to enter that portion of the cavern and get bat guano on my cloak or fur. It smells terrible and is hard to clean out. Not that I likely smell that great myself but a Firbolg must have some standards."
Standing back up he draws a bag pack from under cloak and deposits the coins within. The holding the torch up high again he winces at the pain in his shoulder. He touches his shoulder and casts Cure Wounds for 9. With the pain fading and with a clearer head he looks back down at the fallen foes. He reaches down and takes a scimitar and holds it up to examine it. "The curved scimitar represents the crescent moon, which stands for birth, death, and rebirth in the cycle of Nature. I will take two of these." These also disappear into the folds of his cloak as he takes the blades.
Qidira shakes her head at Durnham's inquiry regarding the crossbow bolts,"I have a mind to select a few as well, " and places her short bow and quiver of arrows on the pile, selecting a crossbow and 10 bolts herself. "I can accompany you to the Bat Cave, but would ask a favor of you? There is possibly a frog left in those waters and I desire my daggers. Would that magic hand be able to help me retrieve them so that I may keep this wound out of the filthy water?" She works the bolt out of her leg carefully grimacing as she does, hoping its not one of those that has to be pushed through to come out.Once finished, she wraps it snugly and moves to gather her share of the coin. He felt the steel biting the flesh of the enemy, tearing down a gash in the elf’s torso just moments before a mote of fire dealt the finishing blow. Not much further Brandon defeater the other one and just like that the bandits were no more. The warlock searches the bodies while Ressys spoke of his feelings on hurting the frogs before checking if the corpses carried any mark of the disease. Durnham expressed an apology for his fall, making the goliath look at his own drenched clothes.
“It was not your fault.” He said to the dwarf while studying the corpse of the elves. They really should have tried to speak before firing. “We would have met them either way and they would not have listened to us. I mean, they attacked first and kept attacking even when I mentioned Tulgi’s name.”
More likely than not the frogs would be brought to the fray in this scenario as well. After all, as Brandon noticed, the creatures were probably trained to stand guard.
“I agree with you guys having these weapons and with the coin division.” Kotar answers to both druid and wizard. “And Ressys is right. Hulil won’t hear us anymore, if she ever would."The fighter points and the corpses with his longsword. “Qidira, would you like to keep scouting ahead of us? From this point on it is safe to assume that whoever we met is an enemy so it’s better if we find them before they find us.”
Durnham turns towards Qidira and shakes his head, “I have to be able to see what I want to use or grab with the hand. If we can find the body of the frog, and it isn’t too deep, then I can try. You didn’t lose that magical dagger did you?”
He then stands up with a crossbow and a bundle of 10 bolts, one of which he loads into the crossbow and slings across his back. He then accepts his share of the coin from the tall Firbolg. “I hope you’re right Winter. But I think we may have sent Elro into an ambush.”
“As forHulil,”He says to the group,”It doesn’t really matter if she will listen to us or not. She will likely be too sick to fight us if she is unwilling to listen. Either way we will find the rest of those items. It’s clear now that the dagger isn’t the cause.”

The fighter points and the corpses with his longsword.
“As for Hulil,” He says to the group, ”It doesn’t really matter if she will listen to us or not. She will likely be too sick to fight us if she is unwilling to listen. Either way we will find the rest of those items. It’s clear now that the dagger isn’t the cause.”
