The new recollection only adding to her confusion, Calliope scans the small tavern area, looking for any of her friends. If she doesn’t see them, she’ll head back and knock on each of their doors until she gets a response.
She sits down with the first person she finds, obviously a bit shaken up. “I found the weirdest thing when I was out walking today….” And she proceeds to explain in detail what she saw.
”…..I mean, do we get a guard? A priest? Just leave it? And what does the name mean? Sophelia is a woman but the body was a man, so I don’t think it’s her. Did he work for her? You know, maybe we could take the mask and melt it down, if it’s real gold it might be worth a lot. No, that’s probably wrong…”She looks up and takes a breath, realizing she’s been rambling. “I don’t know what to do.”
Tark falls backward, but gracefully, into the space between the two barrels. The surprise on his face fades quickly as he begins to understand the situation. You slip into the darkness beneath the cart, and you hear the gentle shooshk of a blade being drawn from its sheathe; you hope Tark doesn't do anything rash.
Narrowing your gaze, you peer down the length of the alley and wait to see who, or what, is approaching. The sound of the footsteps is rhythmic, almost drum-like, and they put every nerve in your body on alert. After a quarter of a minute, the source of the footsteps comes into view: a medium-sized humanoid donning leather armor and wielding a spear. Your vantage point from beneath the cart makes it difficult to see anything above the individual's chest, but Tark, via a sharp whisper, fills in the blanks for you. "Another damned mask!"
You study Tark momentarily and realize he is going to pounce when the sentry is within range in a few seconds...
With a powerful sense of relief, you watch your rapier travel through a lengthy portion of the amphisbaena's body. The serpent writhes violently and uncontrollably for a few seconds before falling entirely still on the blood-soaked deck of the boat. You immediately begin to wonder how you might take this moment of absolutely brilliant swordplay and weave it into a future conversation or public presentation.
After dispatching the serpent you speak a few words of healing over Bright Eyes; the sailor sits up, a confused expression on his face. "I killed it, eh?"
He then looks around the boat as if he's trying to make sense of things. A moment later, he empties the contents of his stomach on the deck.
You are unable to see whoever, or whatever, murdered Pim. You can, however, hear the clear sound of its footsteps as it runs along the outside of the wall that separates the training area from the street. The wall is rather high--you estimate it to be 8' tall--but you have a chance of peering over it if you time your jump correctly and take hold of the stone blocks at the top. Of course, a pursuit on foot through the narrow streets and alleys of Akros is another possibility...
Eyeing a spot between some nearby shelves and the wall, you transport yourself roughly 20' away from the nightmarish creature that is stepping out of the pages of a book. Your fire bolt immediately engulfs the three-armed monster in flames, causing it to stagger and spin across the table. The book from whence it came also erupts in flames. The monster then drops from the table, and takes a few steps unsteady steps toward you. Suddenly one of its arms lengthens and lashes at you like a whip...
Claw attack: 4 causing 5 slashing damage, if successful
Your action is next. The monster--whatever it is--seems to be seriously wounded.
Carzi is the first crewmate you come across; she's a bit bleary-eyed from the grog she's been drinking this afternoon, but she proves to be a good listener as you tell your tale. "Melt it down? Let's hold off on that idea for a bit," she remarks.
Carzi stares into the fire that is blazing in the fireplace nearby for a bit before continuing. "Returned. They're called the Returned for a reason. Returning to the land of the living, but for what? This poor fellow that you've found...maybe he's trying to find Sophelia. I dunno. Sounds a bit crazy, eh?"
Mekleon doesn’t much trust his speed, but he has confidence in his athletic ability, and if he’s able to get a good look at Pim’s assailant he can assist the authorities in finding them, even if he can’t run them down. He leans down over Pim, laying his hands on the man and allowing healing power to flow through them and into him. He then gets up, and prepares to leap...

Now that the danger has passed, Moneo immediately sees the opportunity to paint himself as the hero here (which really isn't untrue), and, even has his heart races, he imagines the drinks bought in his name, and maybe even a bonus? Though he has fully expended his fey energies, he knows he still needs to help the other sailor , and runs over to see if he can quickly bandage him up, yelling for assistance ((medicine 8 - if the other sailor helping would give adv 20)).
As everyone catches their breath, he looks around and says to the others, "Have these creatures been seen here recently? This channel is generally pretty safe I'd thought..."
If there is nothing to salvage from the beast, Moneo will then help the sailors unceremoniously dump it back into the water.
"Yeah, this whole thing has a weird vibe to it," Calliope chuckles, sitting with her elbows propped on her knees. "I mean, he was on a funeral boat miles from the river. How in all hells did he even get there?"She throws her hands up in defeat, sighing and leaning back. "I don't know. This feels... important somehow. Like I was meant to find it, if that makes sense."
She breaks her gaze away from the fire to make eye contact with Carzi."I feel like I need to do something. To figure this out. Maybe talking to this Sophelia would be a good start? Bring her the mask, see if she knows anything?"
Grexes bares his fangs. This was precisely the kind of situation he had wished to avoid. No helping it now...
With as much grace as he can muster, given the circumstances, Grexes attempts to ready his shortsword, a sturdy blade recently sharpened in preparation for the coming fight. Perhaps the danger will pass... perhaps the danger will pass...

Robin is glad to see her fire can harm the thing. She is less happy to see the book itself flash into fire, but, as she has already read the thing, is not overly worried about lore becoming lost. Maybe even her god has decided the book is too dangerous to leave, so has taken action here to make sure no one else has read it. She seems to consider this more then nods her head a bit in thought. Regardless, as she cannot know her god's plans on this right now, she only has one thing she can do right now, deal with this thing that came fromt he book.
Lifting her hand again,s he sends forth another blast of fire at the thing...
For the attempt to jump and look over the wall, I'll apply the general rules about high jumping from PHB:
High Jump. When you make a high jump, you leap into the air a number of feet equal to 3 + your Strength modifier (minimum of 0 feet) if you move at least 10 feet on foot immediately before the jump. When you make a standing high jump, you can jump only half that distance. Either way, each foot you clear on the jump costs a foot of movement. In some circumstances, your DM might allow you to make a Strength (Athletics) check to jump higher than you normally can.
You can extend your arms half your height above yourself during the jump. Thus, you can reach above you a distance equal to the height of the jump plus 1 1/2 times your height.
Pim's wound begins to heal, and the stream of blood from his chest dries up.
Quickly covering the open space in the training area, you leap--albeit awkwardly--and take hold of the top of the wall. The narrow cobblestone street below you has no foot traffic on it at this moment, other than the would-be assassin that is fleeing eastward. With a brown cloak fluttering behind him and a crossbow in hand, he ducks into an alcove approximately 100' down the road.
The wounded crew members are medically stabilized, but you can see the dismay that lingers on their faces for quite some time after the deadly encounter. They go about the business of cleaning up the mess and gore, and, after confirming there's nothing to save from the amphisbaena, you heave the dead serpent overboard, allowing it to become food for whatever sea-floor fauna finds it first.
"Typically safe around here," responds one of the crew. "And an amphisbaena doesn't attack unless it's being threatened. I don't know. Maybe it was sick. Or guarding a brood."
And so ends the first day of the journey to Meletis.
Despite the stress caused by the serpent's attack, you nod off to sleep quickly. You dream once again of an empty auditorium, but for the first time there's a slight variation in what you see as you begin to speak: a mockingbird alights on one of the stone benches. It then sits motionless, as if it has come to be an audience member. You then awake to a morning shrouded in fog.
You're eager to sail eastward, up the channel to Meletis, where you can leave the gloom and memory of the serpent behind. With a few hours of daylight remaining, you can make out the rooftops of the great city, and you begin to consider how you might have a good meal in one of Meletis's fine inns or taverns. Before that, however, you need to navigate the cargo checkpoint. The channel that leads into the city is blocked by two massive chains that stretch across the waterway, one approximately 1' above the water level, and the other approximately 4' above. The chains are raised and lowered as needed to allow vessels to pass.
Moored to the inspection dock, you eye the city official who approaches your boat. The portly human seems weary and ready to call it a day. "Place of origin? Destination? Cargo to declare?" he asks mechanically
Carzi nods, "Aye. A Returned that bears the name of a Meletian philosopher on its mask is an oddity. I wonder if Sophelia will consider that good news or bad news. To Meletis then?"
Tark allows the sentry to pass him, and then, as you surmised, he leaps from the shadows with a dagger in hand. The spear-wielding sentry turns, but Tark has the advantage of surprise...
Main-hand dagger attack: 11 for 4 piercing damage
Off-hand dagger attack: 6 for 4 piercing damage
Tark's initial strike finds its target, but the second misses badly as the sentry takes a step back. You sense you can act before the sentry levels a thrust of its spear at Tark...
Your action is next. The sentry is approximately 15' away, with its back turned.
The second bolt of fire squarely strikes the nightmarish creature, and it takes a few more staggering steps before collapsing on the library floor. The flames die down, leaving a smoldering mass that undergoes a bizarre transformation. First, it morphs into a black pool of tar-like matter, which then takes the form of a page from a book...

Waking in the morning, Moneo is always a bit on alert and anxious after having his dream. Sneaking a quick sip of the liquor from one of the casks to take his mind off it, and give him some energy to start the day, he deeply breathes in the sea air and is now awake and aleft. With a small curse to the gods for yesterday’s adventure, he makes a note of where it happened should he come back this way again soon. As they sail Moneo gets some rest, just enjoying the rest of the trip, ready to hit the city.
As the sailors pull the ship into port Moneo springs off the ship and landing on the deck in a way his cloven hoofs allow him to do, pulls the rope into a quick knot, and stands waiting for the port official to come over. “Good afternoon sir!” he says merrily to the human approaching. “Just coming in from Altrisos through the channel. Bringing some dried squid and fish from the ((Siren)) Sea. Let’s see… I should have our paperwork around here somewhere.” He then starts ‘fumbling’ through where pockets would be if he wore pants, and quickly acts as if he’d ‘found’ a small pouch containing 5gp in it. All part of the show, he thinks smiling to himself, then says, “Hold this a sec… the paperwork should be here somewhere… I just had it…”
If the official stands around waiting for the paperwork, it means the bribe didn’t take, and he does pull out some paperwork that he’d whipped together during the last few hours sailing which he presents to the man with a smile, taking back his pouch of coin.
Persuasion for the ‘squid and fish’ bribe 9 ; if the 5g gives him adv 17 (if not ignore. I’ll often just add the dice. You can use, or ignore, whatever you see fit of course) forgery roll on paperwork if he doesn’t take the bribe 7 + 4 dex? Or +2 int maybe? If deception is also needed, use the persuasion rolls from above. it’s the same modifier.
Assuming he gets through (if not, ignore all this~): Moneo says “Enjoy your afternoon!”, unties the boat, gives it a shove and hops aboard as it’s begins to slowly move up to their assigned dock. He then tells the crew, laughing as he speaks, “y’all stay safe! I’m done here for now. But come find me for a pint later. Though maybe you should be the ones to buy one for the hero of the channel eh?” He then heads off to meet his contact to get paid, and go tell some stories at a bar on the water.
Mekleon tries to drop down safely, then move after the assassin. It may be a pretty far way, but if there’s one thing a Minotaur can do, it’s charge. And charge he does, towards the alcove that the assassin ducked into.

Calliope nods."It seems like that's our best course of action. I think we should go back to the marsh first, though. I want to grab that mask, and see if he has anything else with him. I kind of freaked out a bit and ran straight back here, I didn't spend much time looking around."
If Carzi agrees, Calliope will lead her back to where she found the boat earlier. She'll grab the mask and stick it in her bag, then search the area for any other items of note.
Robin frowns as the shadowy thing went through the change. She moved forward as the page came into being where the creature had been. Leaning down, her cloak swishing around her, she picks the paper up from the floor. Then, as she tucks some of her red curls behind an ear, she glances over the page in her hand. With a shrug she reads what the page contains.
