Grugga manages to cover his face with his arm before the smoke fills his eyes and lungs, and he is spared the brunt of its caustic foulness. Now knowing that they intend to do harm, Grugga rushes the one that exited the smoke by Leelan and strikes at him with his axe.
Being able to get out of the way of the blinding blast, Guilim will make sure to keep the thing at distance with the longer range of his weapon. Staying 10ft away he will swing his halberd towards the creature.
All four adventurers caught in the Smoke Mephit's breath attack are able to cover their eyes or otherwise avoid the blinding ashes. Leelan'sarrow in response goes wide, but as the Mephitstarts to make a wisecrack, Aubrey'sblast clips it in a wing and sets it spinning like a top. Gruggaand Guilimboth connect with their attacks and it squeals, vanishing in a large puff of smoke... this creates a new, smaller smoke cloud in which both Leelanand Gruggaare now standing.
Meanwhile, in the larger smoke cloud, Rohuzaradvances toward the sound of the two joking monsters. He catches a glimpse of one through the thick smoke and lashes out with his axe and feels it find purchase.
Hey! (cough) Whats the big idea?
I dunno, Frank. These guys don't seem to care for our coughing.
That's funny. Just the other day I was getting a checkup, and while he was holding my package, the doc insisted I turn and cough.
Jeez, Frank. (cough) I keep telling you to find a different dentist.
The two mephitsdash away from Rohuzarto the southwest. Rohuzar, you may take an opportunity attack against the one leaving your reach. Otherwise, we are out of combat as they flee into the forest.

Rohuzarclips the creature again with his axe. Its now badly hurt and as it disappears into the smoke, it seems to be holding its wispy form together with its arms. They exit the large smoke cloud to the southwest and vanish into the forest, leaving twin smokey trails behind them. The last thing you hear before they are gone forever:
(Hack! -ow) I have to be honest with you (cough - ow), Marty: your wife is still smoking hot.
Thanks, Frank. They say as soon as she cools off, they (cough, cough) are going to present the ashes to us in a lovely urn.
Over the next sixty seconds, both the large and the small smoke cloud dissipate and rise off into the sky. You notice that once it gets roughly 100 feet from your clearing, the storm winds catch it and pull it apart immediately.
Once the smoke is gone, the chains on the tree seem to loosen of their own accord, and both the chains and the burnt corpse slump to the ground. The head rolls off the corpse and comes to a rest near Rohuzar'sfeet, a thin trail of smoke still drifting from its open mouth.

As Leelan stows his bow away and looks around to account for all his companions, he looks confused.
"I’m not sure what just transpired. I’ve never seen such crass creatures. I’ll have to look into this when I get the chance.", he says, scratching his chin. "In the meantime, we should probably conclude our business here and move along."

"What fate befell this person?" Grugga mutters to no one in particular. He kneels down by the charred corpse and tries to determine anything about it - race, sex, age, how long it's been dead, the cause of the smoke, if it should still be bound in cold iron, etc.
Investigation: 11 Arcana (if needed): 22 History (if needed): 7
The body is difficult to identify. It’s clearly either elf or human but you’d need to perform a forensic exam of the bones to get anything more specific than that. From what you can see it appears to have been burned alive but that’s about all you can tell.
The body itself is inert and shows no signs of being anything other than an old, burned corpse. The head, on the other hand, continues to seep out a small amount of smoke despite generating no heat. This defies natural explanation.

Grugga shakes his head and drapes some of the loose cold iron chain over the bodyless head, so that the chain touches both the body and the head.
"Urgh, I hope that was the worst of what we have to see in this forest..." He drifts off in contemplation, looking at the storm clouds overhead. After a moment of silence, he shivers mightily and turns to face the group in deliberation. "So, the ranger was dropping treats every hundred yards or so, wasn't it? But the old man's 'rule of three' says we need treats for the 'children' at the end of the, um, riddle."
He looks off to the southeast, "Hopefully those weren't the children... but probably not, because we haven't even found the second part of the riddle. The blue lion. What could that be?" Grugga looks around for any signs of a "blue lion"
Looking around, none of you spot anything that looks like it could be interpreted as a ‘blue lion’.
What you DO notice, as you begin trekking again to the northwest, is the sky. Over the next hour, despite a storm raging all around you, lightning and thunder flashing and crashing fore, aft and side to side, the only rain to strike you are droplets off the trees overhead. It seems as though you are walking inside your own private hurricane eye. Just 100 feet or so in every direction, sheets of rain are falling, but you remain dry.
That isn’t to say the walk is easy. While this is an upland forest, the ground is soaked with large puddles and once tiny streams overflow their banks and race through the wood with icy cold water. It seems as though it has been raining intensely here for days. Some trees have even toppled, the soggy ground unable to hold their roots against the winds of the storm. It is a muddy hike with lots of detours around fallen trees and standing water.
Just as you are getting hungry and considering where to stop for some foraging or rations, there is a crash up ahead, and a strange call, something like ‘Kee-harr!’ Though you all look up, only Aubrey catches a glimpse through the trees and rain ahead:
You see something racing through the trees. The haunches of a large animal, perhaps the size of a horse but built lower to the ground. It is a deep navy blue.
While you have been walking NW, this creature is running closer to due west. You catch only a glimpse before you lose sight of it in the rain.
You all hear a few more crashes but then the noise is lost in the roar of the storm.

Leelan, it’s a strange call and difficult to place. It’s certainly not any beast or bird you’ve ever encountered. It was loud and deep… whatever it was sounded like it had a big set of lungs.
