(sorry slow post!) Cerlinde smiles at the Kenku and says "You may remember, I am Cerlinde, my companions and I are on a mission for Cassandra. We would like to see the book and notes Cassandra's apprentice left in the back room, we are investigating the disapeared apprentice. Here is a note for Dursilla"
As you peruse the stacks, you come across some intriguing titles, including Gnomes: Great Inventors or Greatest Inventors?, The 7 Habits of Highly Effective Healers, and How to Smash Kobolds and Influence Goats, as well as the other six aforementioned volumes. You hoped to find a rare first edition of Abyssal Chicken Soup for the Soul, the one with the story of the chicken crossing the road to not get to the other side (portals, of course), but another patron is currently reading it.

The kenku cocks its head, blinking once before steadily regarding Cerlinde for several moments. It seems to ponder your words and blinks again before speaking, in Cerlinde's own voice first, followed by a series of others. "Cerlinde ... on a mission for Cassandra? I'm afraid ... you must have me confused for someone else. The note, if you please." Then, a final pronouncement in what Cerlinde recognizes to be Drusilla's voice. "Allow me a moment to find what you are looking for." The kenku takes the note, heads behind the desk and through a door, which swings silently closed behind him.
From the back of the library, past the door through which the kenku passed, you hear a bit of a commotion that quickly elevates to yelling, then descending to a low moan. You can readily make out the words "interruption" and "students", but shortly thereafter, the kenku emerges from the back. Although his face is difficult to read, he appears to be distressed. He succinctly croaks, "In the back ... speak to Drusilla ... I'm sorry", then gestures for the party to head back around the desk and through the door.
(If anyone wishes to speak to the kenku further, interact with the other patrons, read some books, etc., please feel free! I'll continue w/Drusilla's intro next just to get that out there.)
Once the party has passed into the back room, they see a reading area with a low table and four arm chairs, upholstered in faded red velvet that is well-worn, but welcoming. A few volumes of little value litter the table. You can see what appears to be a weekly publication detailing the goings on in Haven, as well as a spellbook, Basic Hexes for the Busy and Vexed. There is a small hallway bisecting the building on the other side of the common area. As there are no windows in the room, the area is gently illuminated by two magical globes mounted on the wooden walls.
Standing in front of the aforementioned hallway is a short woman with coppery skin and jet black hair, which is somewhat disheveled. Peering through several unruly locks are piercing green eyes, alight with a frantic intensity. She shifts restlessly in her brown robes as you shuffle in, then speaks. "So you're the ones Cassandra has sent to clean up her mess? I would have thought this was a trick of Erevan Ilesere, were it not for this note. At least I recognize you, Cerlinde. Interesting company you're keeping these days. Well, no need to prolong this, you're interrupting one of my lessons and I'd prefer to have my study room freed up sooner rather than later. You do realize it's been nearly a full day since that fellow disappeared? If what little I know of that book is true, you'll be blessed to find him at all, let alone intact. But he did seem to be a bit of a dreamer, maybe he's dreamt his way off to Elysium. What did you say his name was? Oh, no matter, I call him fool for mucking about with those portals, just like Cassandra and that abomination on the roof of her shop. Surprised I'd say such a thing? Believe you me, Haven may not be perfect, but there are far worse places one might end up, particularly when actively investigating planar travel. Cassandra will likely doom us all!"
While it seemed like her rant was really ramping up, after her last comment her eyes darken and lose focus and her words trail off. Drusilla shakes her head and shrugs off whatever had entered her mind. "Now, where was I? Oh yes, the study room. Some damage done, but nothing that a little coin and some craftsmanship won't take care of. This way." She leads you down the short hallway, past two doors leading into small rooms on each side. At the end of the hallway, there is a staircase and a small, tidy kitchen to the left. To the right is a slightly larger room. Drusilla opens the door and walks in. In the room, you see two medium sized desks, both covered with a wide variety of hand-written pages, ink vials, and quills. On one of the desks lies a large tome. In the middle of the floor, you see what appear to be scorch marks. Matreous' cloak and a satchel are hanging on a stand near the door. "Well, this is it. Everything is exactly as it was when we discovered that he was gone. I'm sure you can handle it from here." Drusilla will linger for a few moments to observe how you conduct yourselves and answer any questions you might have, but you can tell she is anxious to resume her teaching.
Syd raises a bushy eyebrow. "What DO you know of 'that book'? How do we know he went through a portal? Maybe he just left when you weren't looking. Maybe he was testing a new spell and disintegrated himself. Maybe you're holding him hostage to keep Cassandra from doing more planar research?"
Syd stops, looking rather surprised at the words that have escaped his mouth. After a moment, he shrugs, grins, and picks a booger.

(love the book titles and these chars!). Cerlinde ensures that Drusilla witnesses her placing the coins in the donation box, as, the group walks in. She gives Syd a look that would curdle milk, but doesn't say anything to him. To Drusilla, she says "Thank you. Unless he told you anything more about what he was specifically looking for, I think we have taken enough of your time for now. We appreciate your assistance." to the group she says "lets look first carefully before we touch anything, in case there are some other clues here." 14 investigation, assuming someone helps.
Mohdrak manoeuvred through the library as best as his large frame allowed. He rather liked books, though you would not be able to tell from looking at him. When he was little he had this flight of fancy of becoming a great scholar. Well, until he discovered the the joy of the sport grounds. Still, the interest had never really gone away but had mostly translated itself into his other hobbies: he liked collecting cookbooks, potion recipes and basically every workout manual he could get his hands on. Who knows, maybe he might write a cookbook himself after his retirement from the field. But those were concerns for later. For now, Mohdrak contented with browsing the rows of books looking for recipes and, though he would never admit it to anyone, trashy romance novels: his secret vice.
The kenku clerck had returned and showed the group the way forward. Mohdrak brought up the rear. He could have taken the front, he certainly was agile enough to get ahead, but he was conscious that his posture would block the view from some of the smaller members.
After Drusilla had vented her rant, she was not anything at all like Mohdrak imagined a librarian would be, the minotaur looked around the room they were in. He reached for the large tome when he heard Cerlinde's warning.
'It's a book.' He retorted with a shoulder shrug. 'Books can't hurt you. Unless someone throws them at you. I'd imagine that might hurt.' He picked the book up with the intent of opening it to the last page read or wherever a bookmark might be.

Drusilla responds curtly to Syd, "You do make some interesting points, and maybe I slightly regret not having taken those actions myself. Or maybe I don't. I only know that the book is something that I wish I had been aware of earlier so that I could have taken more precautions with it. However, since the life of Cassandra's apprentice is at risk, I have agreed to let her representatives, i.e., you lot, to use it to help retrieve him. After that, I will keep it safe."
Mohdrak examines the book, and while certainly not for him thanks to his massive physique, it is, relatively speaking, a heavy tome. Its thick covers are made of ornately tooled, rich brown leather decorated with gold filigree. Of particular interest is the illustration on the cover: the bust of an imposing spellcaster. It is difficult to say if they are in fact red or aflame, but the gentleman appears to be glaring at you intensely with smoldering eyes. As you flip through the pages, you find that you can't quite make out the full meaning of the text and the copious notes in the margin are indecipherable.
The rest of the party searches the room in earnest, hoping to find clues as to the nature of the disappearance. Ollezall, you find that the notes taken by Matreous appear to be written in Celestial. They are not currently very organized, but you may be able to make something of it with further examination. Dyumi, as you peer under Mohdrak's arm, trying to catch a glimpse of the book, you notice that the notes that clutter the margins are written in Abyssal. Syd, you find that the marks on the floor were not made from fire, or at least any sort of fire you're familiar with.
(Can anyone interested please make additional checks? I'd recommend Arcana and/or History. ;-)

Syd scuffs the floor where the marks are with his feet, but finds they do not smear as one might expect from soot. He kneels down to take a closer look and a sniff, taking up quite a lot of space. Scratching at the marks with his fingernails, it seems almost as if the colour has seeped into and stained the wood. It is mostly black, with a hint of a silvery sheen if the light catches it just right. Oddly enough, there is no smell at all from this section of floor, not smoke or sulfur, or even wood.
As Cerlinde examines the text of the book further, she finds a section that details the establishment of a more durable version of Mordenkainen's Magnificent Mansion. The pages of this section seem to be slightly more worn and the handwritten notes slightly more plentiful. This would likely be a good place to start for Dyumi.

Mohdrak held the book out at arms' length in front of him. He could not make head or tails of it. He was not stupid, as some of the less flattering examples of his race tended to be, but after about thirty seconds of twisting and turning the book in all directions, he had to conclude that this just was not his cup of tea.
'Here, you take it.'He shoved to book towards Cerlinde. From what little time the group has spent together, he figured she would be the brains of the bunch.
With the others taking point, the minotaur felt a little out of his depth. Academic research was not his forte, unless it required a hands on approach, and seeing the others inspecting the writings or the scorch marks made Mohdrak like he was the odd one out not contributing. He was all for the solo act but teamwork made the dream work, as his coach often said that one year he tried out for teamsports. Disastrous results aside - if the ball went in the goal counted as a point, did it really matter if someone was still holding on to it? - he felt he had to do something. Mohdrak moved across the room in search of something not related, at least not directly, to the research at hand. Who knows, he might find a personal diary. Or receipts for food delivery. Or potions. All those brainiacs downed potions by the dozens just to get their papers done before the deadline. Or so he had heard. Anything that might clue him in to what Matreous was doing if he was not nose deep in ink and books.
Ollezall will translate the celestial, and use the combination of perception and insight to try and make sense of the notes. Is there an intention behind the scrawl, was Matraeous being watched, did his notes dramatically change from start to finish? Ollezall of course wouldn't be able to connect any clues, but he can point out anything he spots for higher minds to put together the larger picture.

He was not stupid, as some of the less flattering examples of his race tended to be, but after about thirty seconds of twisting and turning the book in all directions, he had to conclude that this just was not his cup of tea.
'Here, you take it.' He shoved to book towards Cerlinde.
