The first sensation you feel is a pounding headache which beats mercilessly inside your skulls. Cracking open your eyes, you see yourself in a hexagonal, windowless room entirely constructed of obsidian-black marble splashed with milky-white swirls. A driftglobe spirals lazily in circles throughout the air, illuminating the sight of another handful of unfamiliar individuals in the same situation as you - sprawled over the cool floor, just regaining their consciousnesses.
Before a word can be said, a sourceless, thunderous voice compounds the ringing sensation in your ears - seemingly emerging from the very walls itself. "Murderer, thief, wretch, and worse, Answer for your crimes you will today. Prove your valor matches your violations, Or meet the darkness of death's decay."
Hello, everyone! I have wanted to run a one-shot based around an area a campaign of mine unfortunately never stumbled across in their adventuring times. This adventure leans more into a puzzle-based dungeon-crawl experience which focuses on characters overcoming character flaws or evil tendencies rather than a full-out combatfest; expect greed and avarice to be common elements throughout the dungeon. Character decisions will have significant impact on how deadly the dungeon is.
IMPORTANT INFORMATION: -This is a One-Shot, singular, good-old Dungeon Crawl. This isn't a full campaign - there will, however, be plenty of puzzles, roleplay opportunities, and moral quandaries which can certainly lead towards character development. -I will be updating the thread with major updates every two to three days - combat, however, will go by much quicker. Please only apply if you can confidently post at the stated pace. -OOC chat will be handled in either a group PM through forums - or, if the players are able to, a separate discord chat. -I do not have content sharing enabled through DDB. -If you need to step away from forums or posting for some time, you are more than free to do so - just make sure to inform me! Communication is key, especially in forums games. CHARACTER CREATION: -Characters will be 13th level throughout the adventure. In the interest of balance, only official content is allowed. Unearthed Arcana will not be permitted. -ABILITY SCORES: Roll one set, rerolling ones ONCE. If you aren't happy with your rolled stats, feel free to take Point-Buy or Standard Array instead. -BANLIST: Peace Domain Clerics, Twilight Domain Clerics, Marked Races. -BACKSTORY: The bare minimum I require is - what has your character done to earn the attention of some justice-seeking being? Your character must be guilty of some wrong. Your character may have committed a crime - theft, murder, or extortion, for example. Perhaps your character is an arcanist who threatened to disturb the weave of magic in the world, or a mage who attempted to cheat death - or, possibly, your character was simply in the wrong place at the wrong time. Be as descriptive or as minimal as you wish. While a backstory isn't the be-all, end-all, a well-written and cohesive backstory increases the chance of you being accepted into the campaign. I am open to all alignments, but there is an implied stipulation of characters working together regardless of alignment so the campaign can actually function. -EQUIPMENT: You may start with your choice of nonmagical armor and weapons from Chapter 5 of the PHB. You have a cumulative 5 slots to 'purchase' magical items - Uncommon items count as one slot, Rare items count as two, and Very Rare items count as three. For example, a character can have a +3 Longsword (3 slots) and a +2 Shield (2 slots), or they can have two +1 Shortswords (1 slot each) and +3 Longbow (3 slots), and so on. I cannot filter through and list all of the items which can be problematic or banned, so certain items will be disallowed and I will ask you to change your item loadout, should you be accepted to the campaign. Word of advice? Don't plan your character around a specific item.

APPLICATION TEMPLATE: -Character Name: Varan the Bloodless -Character Class / Subclass: Sorcerer/Draconic Ancestry -Character Alignment: Lawful Evil (character definitely breaks laws, but I see him as someone with a code and who sticks to that code - but for once) -Backstory: Varan made use of his natural talents in poison based magic (owing to a few drops of green dragon blood watering his family tree) to become a killer for hire, his calling card being killing his targets without bloodshed, often publicly. He kept to a vigorous code which - in his mind at least - made this honest work. He never allowed for any collateral damage and only hit the targets he was hired to kill. Until one recent incident. He was in a hurry to catch a ship out of the country and he took a quick job without doing his proper homework. He thought his target was alone in his home and took advantage of an unexpected opportunity, releasing a subtle cloudkill in through an open window. It was only when he heard the gasping cries of the target's family that he realized his error. Knowing that he could release concentration on the spell and possibly spare the innocents, but that doing so would likely spare the target and tip him off, and make himself a target of those who had hired him, he made the cold decision to break his own code and held the spell until only silence and fog lingered in the residence, then made for his ship in the night. That decision has haunted him, and his nights have been plagued by dreams of terror and death, until he awakens in this strange dungeon, made to answer for his crime.

APPLICATION TEMPLATE: -Character Name: Ragnar Yithril the IV -Character Class / Subclass: Human Paladin Oath of Conquest -Character Alignment: Lawful Evil -Backstory: Ragnar was of noble birth in a small backwater nation tucked away in the frozen north. Having several brothers, he was sent away from the palace to become a monk in some forgotten monastery. However, in a strange twist of fate, both his father and his brother died of "natural causes." Ragnar had consorted with devils of the Nine Hells, and emerged from the monastery to take the throne while wielding unnatural fiendish magic.
Under his rule, Ragnar made great accomplishments. He united the warring tribes of his nation and consolidated a formidable army from the squabbling tribals. Under his personal command, he lead the army to conquer the surrounding lands, and when his soldiers marched to the sea and could go no further, he put them on longships and sailed across the ocean to campaign further. Meanwhile, Ragnar put his mind to modernizing his realm. He called for the construction of roads, schools, and fortresses, and invited countless foreign advisers to help him to do so. His people would exchange fur clothes for silks, and their thatch homes would become ones of sturdy bricks. Ragnar's nation transformed from a small backwater to one of the greatest powers in his part of the world.
However, Ragnar would not be known as a benevolent leader. He ruled with an iron fist and valued the rule of law over the balm of mercy. Oppression and tyranny became a fact of life in his realm. And when the eventual rebellion occurred, he would become infamous for his harsh repression of it. One of his tribes, horse riders who valued freedom above all else, sought to overthrow him. After mercilessly crushing the revolt, his forces virtually annihilated the tribe from existence. They say for months afterward, the ice in the area the tribe inhabited would be red with blood.
And yet, Ragnar feels not a tinge of remorse or sympathy for those he's hurt. Perhaps that'll change in the future...
(Ragnar can definitely work together with a party. He's an inspiring leader and actually quite charismatic and empathetic. He believes in mutual cooperation towards a common goal, and is only prepared to do whatever it takes to reach that goal.)
APPLICATION TEMPLATE: -Character Name: Gwathren a Gurth -Character Class / Subclass: Monk (Way of Shadows / Fighter Battlemaster) -Character Alignment: Neutral -Backstory: Drow Half Elf
Gwathren was not much better than a slave, a half breed amongst the Drow he was not considered a full Drow and suffered abuse. Pain rolls down hill and he worked for the Drow hunting escaped slaves and capturing new ones. In the course of his service any wrong done to him he visited 10 fold on those below him, which were the full slaves of the Drow. Murder, torture, **** and enslavement, he was part of it all. Trained as a hunter-killer in the "Way of The Spider" he finally left the drow after being saved by a wood elf while on the surface hunting slaves. He left the Drow behind, keeping his dark past a secret from all who he grew to know later in his life. He earned a reputation as an adventurer, as someone who did good...if those around him only knew the truth of his past, he would likely be executed on the spot.
A one-shot like this sounds like fun. Would love to go on a journey to redemption!

-Character Name: Tristan Detsk -Character Class / Subclass: Bard, College of Swords -Character Alignment: Chaotic Neutral - he may be unreliable, but he values personal freedom above all else and will work with the party as their interests are aligned in escaping -Backstory: Tristan joined a wandering minstrel and circus troupe to escape a life growing up as an orphan on the streets, sleeping with one eye open, searching for scraps of food from the gutter and picking pockets. In the circus, Tristan learned the subtle art of weaving magic into song along with the skills of acting, acrobatics, and entertaining with the sword. There was more to the circus than it seemed, it was a great cover for criminal activity as they traveled throughout the kingdoms. Smuggling, blackmail, larceny, all of it took place, most with the tacit approval of the ringmaster. Tristan was an able student and became a willing tool of his mentor and the ringmaster, trading in secrets and stolen goods at most every city they performed. The lifestyle came with great risks, and it soon caught up with them. While “recovering” a priceless artifact from its previous owner for an unscrupulous dealer, the job went awry, guards were alerted, and Tristan had to fight his way out. While not an uncommon occurrence, the loss of life in this case included several innocent bystanders which bothered Tristan not in the least as long as his own personal freedom was assured. Which it was, until he awakened in this windowless room.

-Character Name: Orilo Horncarver -Character Class / Subclass: Barbarian 2/Fiend Bladelock 11 -Character Alignment: LE -Backstory: A half-elf born among the tribesmen living in the frozen wastes, his mind was shaped by inadequacy. Easily the smallest, slowest, weakest and most frail of all the men around him, bullied for his weakness and denigrated for being a burden, he developed a lust for power which led him to form a pact with an imp in exchange for eldritch knowledge and martial prowess. Forced to flee the tribe when this was discovered, the pact required him to commit evil acts of increasing magnitude until his rage did not only come from his memories of the poor treatment he used to get, but now also at the fiends using him as their tool, their weapon.
Name:Avarice Embershade Race: Tiefling Class: Warlock (Fiend) Background: Criminal Alignment: Lawful evil Backstory: Avarice was born into an outstandingly greedy patriar house of Baldurs gate. His parents had made a pact with Asmodeus for wealth and fortune, but the price, Avarice being born, was too high and the patriars sent the infant child away to be taken care of by their connections within the Guild. Shortly thereafter the patriar estate burned to the ground with no survivors, as if the fires of hell had consumed the patriar family for not holding up their end of the bargain. Instead of being left in the woods Avarice was brought up by a man he ever only knew as Uncle Embershade, a grey eminence within the Guild, who taught him all there was to know about how to satisfy one´s avarice. When he came of age Avarice felt that he had outgrown Bladurs gate and set out on a journey across Faerûn to amass immense wealth, constantly feeding his black hole with ever greater treasures. That is until one day when he finally was brought before a great reckoning.
Name: Ril Shavug Character Class / Subclass: Human Warlock (Great Old One) / Fight (Battle Master) Character Alignment: Chaotic evil Backstory: Ril was a solider for a city, fighting in many battles. The more he fought the more his bloodlust grew. His bloodlust eventually drew the attention of a mysterious entity, a great old one. This being was drawn to Ril for his pure savagery and offered him more power. Ril accepted and the entity broke off a piece of itself to latch on to Ril. Ril found himself with more power to fight with, but the entity now constantly pushes Ril towards becoming a savage killer.
Ril has now savagely killed a couple of people in the middle of the night before fleeing from the cities away from jurisdiction of their authorities. From these killings, Ril has managed to picked up a couple of magical items.
As a child, Zentrix was taught, family, friends, and good times were the key to success and happiness. A cartographer by trade and unexpectedly thrusted into the militia as a scout due to his size and knowledge of the land. War had broke out in the region and his home had become engulfed in the crossfire of two competing nations. Zentrix comes from a humble, but comfortable upbringing in his village known for it's lush farms and productive silver mine, not prepared for battle but learn so as a necessity. For several years he spent his days keeping his people safe, avoiding combat when possible and misdirecting his foes to other more easily targeted towns and villages than his own, bargaining when needed with his bitterness growing and fear for personal safety, not the protection of his village. Eventually he became disconnected with the people of his town, holding them with less savory opinions, but still protecting them as much as possible. He continued his bargaining and his misleading tactics, both of which became more selfish and devious until one day, he had met his match and was given a choice: himself or his village, his own Misery or an opportunity. Morals already lost, and a chance he would not turn down... He watched his village burn that day and left with an "ally" who reminds him of this to this day.
Mulligan McSullivan is the epitome of the "lovable rogue" - He is the scamp people just cannot help but seem to forgive, no matter his crimes. And on the rare occasion he goes to far... Well a month or so spent at a different local watering hole is usually enough to allow tempers to mellow. On those very rare occasions when he gets caught red handed, either with his hand in someone else's coin purse or himself in bed with the wrong man's wife, his rapier has gotten him out the situation when needed.
His mother was a prostitute, his father a card player - Mulligan had a fabulous childhood full of learning about people and how best to take advantage of them! Skills he applies liberally, whether it be cheating at cards, petty thievery, scamming the wealthy or cheating the well off. If someone has more than a few coins in their pocket, they are fair game. Though coming by coin so easily, Mulligan has no great need to horde it. As quickly as his pockets are full he is buying rounds or anonymously paying off someone else's debts.
Mulligan McSullivan never sought out an adventurer's lifestyle, his playing fast and loose with the law, with morality and with ethics has lead to more than enough drama and adventure in his day to day life. Trying to remember which guards you owe, which owe you, which wealthy merchant know's you slept with their wife, daughter or mistress and which is trying to hire you to make sure their competitor's business falls on hard times is a tricky business... In all fairness, outtalking a dragon and scamming a fairy princess would seem like child's play to him!
But while Mulligan never intends to harm anyone, people do get hurt. It's a special kind of blindness that allows Mulligan McSullivan to believe that every ill he does can be smoothed over with a charming smile, a quick joke, a favor done or a heartfelt apology... He has, perhaps, committed no grand crimes in the great scheme of things, but his uncountable petty little harms, injustices and shams have done more damage than most men could ever do while trying.
Magic Items chosen: Bag of Holding, Gloves of Thievery, Rapier +1 and Glamoured Studded Leather
(If chosen I would likely add various odds and ends - bottles and vials filled with various colored liquids, weighted dice, a disguise or two, various trinkets and costume jewelry... All stuff used to scam, swindle or bewilder people in the shenanigans he pulls.)
Wulgar grew up on board ship, assistant to the captain and as he grew larger, more bold and aggressive, he became a fearsome member of their boarding and landing party. He carried a whip and a large axe, he would fly into a rage and at times burn up his foes with flame.
His ship was a privateers ship, and one day he sided with a mutinous first mate to kill his captain and move their business to an even less honorable practice, away from thievery and piracy, into the slave trade. He became legendary for the ferocity with which he would attack his enemies, inspiring his shipmates with courage and stamina when theirs was flagging.
He wakes up in the windowless hexagonal room with the booming voice in his head, fully knowing what he has become, unrepentant as a thief, slaver, and murderer.
Magic Items : Greataxe +1, Goggles of Night, Cloak of Protection, Bracers of Defense
-Character Name: Black Stan -Character Class / Subclass: Paladin/Conquest (12) + Warlock/Hexblade (1) -Character Alignment: Lawful Evil -Backstory: Black Stan is the one they let off the leash when diplomacy fails. He has served his kingdom as War Master for the better part of a decade. The surrounding kingdoms have fallen in line after several coup attempts were put down in a horrific fashion by Black Stan and his band of elite warriors. Stan prefers to lead by example, showing no mercy, often burning whole villages to the ground to set an example for any who would dare to refuse the king's rule. He takes pride in hunting down rivals, removing them and their heirs from contention, setting entire family trees ablaze. He is efficient, effective, and the dreadful deterrent every king needs to maintain order.

Name: Keyleth Siannodel Class: Rogue, Inquisitive Archetype Alignment: Chaotic Good Background: An explorer with a thirst for knowledge, Keyleth's spent years searching ruins and dungeons; what she finds, she takes to historians and researchers. She delights in learning what the things she's found are, and what it all means. Unfortunately for her, it was bound to backfire eventually, and backfire it did when she took an ancient painting from a ruin--unbeknownst to her, it was an ancient temple to Tiamat, and the painting was of one of the deity's humanoid forms. When the historian she brought it to informed her of this, she panicked, left the painting, and ran to get far away from civilization, so that when Tiamat inevitably punished her, no one else would be caught in the crossfire. Before anything happened, though, she awoke in the windowless room. Magic gear: Two +2 shortswords, +1 studded leather armor

Backstory: Avarice was born into an outstandingly greedy patriar house of Baldurs gate.

APPLICATION TEMPLATE:
-Character Name: Mulligan McSullivan
-Character Class / Subclass: Rogue/Swashbuckler 7 / Bard/College of Sword 6
-Character Alignment: Neutral
-Backstory:
