Shavaris nods as the barkeep makes eye contact with her, when they make their way over to her, she asks "Good evening, what do you have to wet my lips? Actually.. would you happen to have a dark red wine? That just really sounds good at the moment. Also, do you happen to have any open rooms? I have four companions and myself looking for rooms for the night."
Kerwyn is brought out of his reverie by the arrival of the guards. He appraises the situation, steps in and says “There are no problems here, just a misunderstanding. And an excited snail. We have everything straight now.” He turns to Ralik and says “You don’t have to pay for Old Ironsides, I should have hand a better eye on him. I didn’t know he would head for the most _expensive_ lumber. Who knew? Snails, huh!” 🤷🏼♂️ Kerwyn gives Ralik the gold, compensating him for the mayhem from Ironsides.
“Let’s head out of here, before he eats the magic wood of the Deku tree or some other expensive tidbit. Where did Shevaris head to, the Magical Badger? She up and disappeared on us, we need to track her.” With that, Kerwyn collects Old Ironsides and snails out of the lumberyard, heading back to Inn street, hoping that Jonathan, Aoe and Ralik will follow.
Rollback Post to RevisionRollBack
A wizard is never late, nor is he early, he arrives precisely when he means to.
Johnathan has remained very quiet after Ralik hit him with the club. He was in complete shock. Before he even has time to shout at him the guards appeared. It seemed that they were being watched. He turns to the guards, still speaking in his fake voice. Yeah, no worries. A misunderstanding. We will be going now. Sorry to have disturbed your evening. With that Johnathan will leave the the mushrooms. He doesn’t look back at the old man. When Ralik is out of ear shout of the old man and guards he will slowly turn his head to him. His expression is cold, more so than usual. Well that just happened. I … understand why you did it. I may have pressed too hard on him, it wasn’t my intention to scare him halve to death. He pauses for a sec, struggling to say the next part. I’m sorry for getting caught up in the moment. Let’s move on. He turns to Kerwyn. Is the snail happy now? We should get back to Shavaris and discuss plans. I believe she is at the magical badger.
Aoe watches the group settle into a pattern, he worries…
meet friendly person, scare them off… he wonders if they should keep to the less beaten paths, attract less attention, give the rabble rousers less people to rabble at and rouse up…
the mention of shavaris and the inn Aoe remembers military lecture he had sat in on in the last… that they should prioritize safety and creating a defensible position… in a new city that probably means finding a way to feel safe about their mounts, their possessions, and their own hides.
”yes, stables and inn… if you want to do the inn first that is fine.”
Aoe entering the inn takes the chest off his draft horse and puts it between his feet at the table with shavaris. He keeps his inner ankles squeezed around it…. Looking up at her he jokes, “leg warmer” and smiles at the clever rogue for rushing off. “So what have you learned about this city so far?”
The barkeep smiles and says he does have rooms; three, to be exact. He brings her a glass of a stout, earthy red wine that he sits in front of her and grins.
"No offense, but the ladies don't normally order this 'un. It's potent stuff."
The denizens of the inn only regard the Dawn Guard momentarily as they walk in and seat themselves for drinks or dinner or whatever they're after. It doesn't take the barkeep long to bring them the keys to three rooms and sit them in front of Shavaris, since she has requested them.
"All we had left, I'm afraid. Everything in town is getting booked up fast, I'm afraid. Always people traveling in and out of port, you see."
He went back to cleaning glasses and tending his wares.
Shavaris gives a wide grin when her fellas come into the Inn. It was honestly the first time they had separated since they started together way back at the Ivory Tower and she just realized how much she has come to rely and appreciate them, all. She waves them over to her table and chuckles when Aoe calls his chest a leg warmer. "What exactly do you have in there, Sir Aoe? You sure like keeping secrets."she pauses for a moment, considering Aoe's question.
"Well, as you can see, almost half of this tavern is full of those men with the red emblems. So you can imagine the rest of the Inns are most likely filled about the same as none of these Inns are much different than the other, save the Smiling Orc. I'd say it's quite the military force that has come upon this town and is probably just the advancing party. I fear what they are mobilizing for."she takes another long swig of the stout red wine, letting it warm her from within.
As the barkeep brings the 3 keys, she looks up at the rest and grabs one. "You boys can figure out the rest, this one is mine."
“So you all really don’t know who I am! How refreshing! In the circles I frequent that is hard to come by…”
”…but perhaps you have heard of my epic ballad The Rise of the Gelflings, Oh Bravery? It is the most sought after rendition of the Great War on hylia and eternia!…”
he looks around to make sure no one else is listening in too carefully…
“…Or how about The Ballad of Baggins, a Halfling Triumph? It is one of my favorite stories, told to me by a wizard with a long white beard that I turned into a show over some pipe weed many ages ago… I added some comedy to balance out the sheer scale of that epic conflict though!” He chuckles at his own joke.
Taking his staff he activates the tip and placed three gold coins above it… they float about and organize themself and then float again.. “this staff i use for the triforce scenes… I won’t take out my replicas of the triforce as to not disturb the tavern, but you can imagine…” Aoe indicates the direction of his chest with his eyes…
“this chest is mostly for those shows… it houses some of the more important props that give it an extra special spark of joy… when you put on a show you have to have a little something for everyone in the audience, from child to elder, from educated listener to there for the slapstick humor among us.”
he leans in closely… “and then there are a few personal items.. like a special brew which happens to be my favorite in the land… for the taste of course… as well the social utility when i am able to present it to a patron who is alcoholically inclined” he winks to the others.
“I will room with Johnathan if no one protests… someone has to show him what family is… we learn from our mistakes together… hopefully…” Aoe shoots his a glance to see is he’s daydreaming…
Johnathan follows Aoe and the others to the tavern. He sits next to Shavaris and Aoe and very casually orders an ale. He turns to the others, Well, I could never pass up a good drink you know. He gives a small smile. It was the first time he ever made a joke about his condition to the band. Sounds like you have many great tales Aoe. I would be interested in seeing one of your performances one day. Who knows, maybe the next tale you sing will be of our success.
He turns to Shavaris, yes I’ve noticed the red emblems. I tried scouting them out earlier but didn’t discover much. They seem to keep their plans somewhat private, and I haven’t seen one particular building that they go to. I get the feeling that they are just passing through.
He pauses for a sec and has another sip of his drink. I fear that they may try to go east towards the keep, but for who I can’t say. He looks around the tavern, still trying to keep a close eye on the patrons. He remains quiet for a bit as he thinks of the next steps ahead of them. We should get a boat tomorrow, maybe try to trade goods and get supplies. It’s at this point that the 3 keys are presented, which Shavaris immediately grabs one. Sure Aoe… we can share a room I guess. He pauses as Aoe mentions family. Family huh? Haven’t heard that in a while. That’s very kind of you to say Aoe, thank you.
You know Aoe, you definitely seem like the father type. Guess that makes me the moody teen of the Dawn guard. He chuckles at this, even though it was his own joke. With that Johnathan will follow Aoe to the room and take a night of rest.
“I agree… I do hope this is a beautiful story… as well when it is told to our childrens children, that the young dhampire from humble beginnings is a beacon of light for those who find themselves in dire straights and seek to change their circumstances, rising from the darkness… and not the one who leads us to downfall” Aoe comforts him, hoping the group is truly on the path to saving this world…
The relative quiet of the hall was punctuated for a second by the sound of a chair sliding across the floor near the bar. Moments later, one of the Hobgoblins was leaning against the bar, casually eyeballing the group as they talked about songs and what-not. The Hobgoblin smiled and waved fingers at Aoe.
"A bard huh?" He said with a voice that was sly and low. "We've been traveling for many, many weeks without any sort of entertainment. Perhaps you could entertain us, hm? We'd love to hear this song about...what was it you called it? Baggins? The Halfling Triumph!"
His voice rose a bit, and a couple of Hobgoblins and an Orc he'd been sharing a table with turned around, putting focus on Aoe, Johnathan, and Shavaris.
As Aoe tells them more about himself and the way he performs, Shavaris is impressed. "Aoe, while I have not seen a great many bards entertain living out where I do, the ones I have seen never come close to putting on what you say you do. I do hope to see it someday soon. I'll try and behave myself,"she winks at him, "because honestly, my opinion of bards is they are great distractions for what I do best." and she gives the rest of the company a now familiar sly smile of hers. Then she shrugs her shoulders and says, "What are you going to do?"
When the hobgoblin pipes in, Shavaris is taken a back. She isn't usually surprised like this and admonishes herself for not being more aware of their surroundings. Then realizes the bard was doing what he does best, he distracted them with his tales and they were just remnants! Man, Aoe must be good. They appeared to just be looking for entertainment, but now that she was aware of them, she kept an eye on all of them, making sure they weren't going to surprise her again.
“Baggins’… Baggins’… they say… one of the bravest halfling families to have roamed the realms!” Aoe laughs, thinking while distracting them with some banter of which scene to perform… not too violent… not too boring…
”We are tired from travel, but I will play one song from it perhaps if you tell me what ship moves for eternia on the morrow! We seek the mushroom forest or the labyrinth as our next stop…” thinking to ironhides’ addiction to Shrooms he adds in the first major location that came to mind…
Aoe move his bandore from his back to his chest and begins to tune it. “Ping……pang…. Pong… Ping!!! PING!!!!!!” The strings ring true and he stands, awaiting others to sit and become quiet:
Aoe pauses and smiles at shavaris, to calm her from fear… she didn’t like tue eyes, but they were in him now… in case she needed to excuse herself.. picking up the pace…
“And who was among the heroes at hand?
who came to save this soon to die land?
elven and goblin and feywild force…
Straight to mount doom was driven their course…”
Aoe changed dwarf to goblin, knowing how to play to a crowd… one must never yell hello hylia when playing in eternia. And vice versa.
“but wouldn’t you know, in mountain pass fold,
impeeded by ice and the wintery cold!
so into the deep they traveled and crawled
but there was a balrog, and their wizard did fall…”
aoe tears, thinking about those we lose along the way…
“Now comes a split with the fellowship rocked…
cohesion was gone, and everyone shocked…
The ring bearing halfling to shadows did flee
and gone from the land all hope and all glee…”
he stops, deciding one last stanza and he was too tired to keep going tonight…
”and as all the kingdoms, just fought over talk,
slowly toward doom, did Baggins so walk.….
(he jumps to part of the ending)
…Trials and triumph in sacrifice laid,
We honor the lives that for peace have been paid.”
by this point Aoe has gone from sailing and bobbing to crying and calm. As he ends the short sampling, he puts his knee to the ground and bows his head…. He says a group prayer
”to Baggins..
Who never was the same again,
Who was everyone’s friend,
by just being himself,
to the very end.”
a tear slides from his eye to the tip of his nose and drops to the wooden floorboards.
Kerwyn takes the last key and looks at Ralik, "Guess the last one is for you and me. I might smell of snail and wood, but I promise, I don't bite." He tries not to, but his eyes wander over to Johnathan and then dart away.
He sits down and his tired foot begins tapping when Aoe begins the song. He chimes in, "I've heard of this Baggins fellow. A right merry chap! I love this song, whooo hoo!" His arms swing and sway, he really joins in and accentuates Aoe's refrains. As the tale slows down and turns sad toward the end, Kerwyn is moved and remains still and calm, a tear coming to his eye. "A right said tale. The hero on his quest, the hero on his journey." He looks at his companions. "Like us, eh? I wonder what we will be like at the end of our journey? I feel that there will be many tales made of our adventures. Cheers!" He gives a smile and tries to warm their mood...
When everyone has seated, and there is a quiet moment alone with his companions, he says "I have some news, from the other Auryn bearers. I received a communication, it came right into my mind! I've never had anything like that experience before. I sent them well wishes from us and a quick summary of what we have done. I received a message from Greko the Green, they have seen the two suns just like we have, and one of their companions knows of this from a book they have read. "Do I look like a harbormaster?" The Hobgoblin sneered to Aoe's question, but looked like he was making a mental note of their destination upon being told.
The Hobgoblin has this look on his face. It's...well it's not good. He looks from his position at the bar where he had been leaning back to his table, then toward the other tables in the room. It's clear that the song got everyone attention. No one was clapping or cheering or sobbing...if anything they looked irritated or something. When finally the Hobgoblin that had approached Aoe caught his gaze, it's expression became a mischievous grin.
"Well. That happened." He said, then looking away from Aoe to one of the Orcs far across the room. He then points at Kerwyn. "Hero, this one said. He's even misty eyed."
One of the Orcs in the back of the room huffed something then grumbled. The Hobgoblin said something in Goblin-tongue with a hint of glee laced in it.
Aoe sits down and finishes his meal, happy to have sung the song, if only for the enjoyment of the process… lesson learned… no appreciation for the arts around here I guess, especially those with the red marks…
he avoids confrontation unless forced upon him, ignoring everyone and pretending he didn’t hear a word the hobgoblins or kerwyn said… he keeps his bandore on his back, his chest close, and his staff closer…

Johnathan was having a great time. He was enjoying his drink and was almost ready to go to bed. It was then he realised that the hobgoblins gathered around them. Great, the one time I let my guard down. Can’t even get a drink in this world. He remains quite as Aoe sings his tale, listening carefully to the tale. Unlike Aoe and Kerwyn, Johnathan doesn’t cry. He just sits back and continues to drink, trying to blend in as best as possible. He watches their body language to see if they are hostile to them or not. He then saw their disapproval at the word hero. Maybe they don’t like halflings? Johnathan also listens to Kerwyn about the Auryn, but is concerned that he said this in front of the hobgoblins. Johnathan waits to see what happens next.

Kerwyn starts to really pay attention to the others in the establishment, looking hard at the hobgoblins and the symbols that they wear. He begins to speak in even lower tones. “I don’t like this, I think we should casually leave here and move along.” Kerwyn seems nervous to you.
History : 17
“Something about those symbols, these guys weren’t here when I passed through before.” A look of realization comes on his face. He whispers one more word, “Vader!”
When finally the Hobgoblin that had approached Aoe caught his gaze, it's expression became a mischievous grin.
"Well. That happened." He said, then looking away from Aoe to one of the Orcs far across the room. He then points at Kerwyn. "Hero, this one said. He's even misty eyed."
One of the Orcs in the back of the room huffed something then grumbled. The Hobgoblin said something in Goblin-tongue with a hint of glee laced in it.

Kerwyn stealth : 6
(Without disadv stealth of 18, first roll).
A wizard is never late, nor is he early, he arrives precisely when he means to.

“Something about those symbols, these guys weren’t here when I passed through before.” A look of realization comes on his face. He whispers one more word, “Vader!”
