Seeing three of her fellow adventurers hit by the flames, Khessa thinks, frustrated: "The smell of sulfur made me suspect that the creature could use fire-based attacks ... but unfortunately I didn't have time to say it, it all happened too quickly"
The tall arcane warrior runs to the rescue of her companions, unsheats her greatsword and places herself on the same side of the wall, to take advantage of the small cover provided as well, but on the opposite side of the monster from Tristan, so that the eventual next fire breath will not be able to strike them both. She also advises: "Now that we know that it can breath fire, don't gather, if not needed! Try to attack from different positions, to prevent it from hitting us all together".
And, remembering Tristan's hint, the blonde warrior-mage, even if she has no idea what a 'battery' is, tries at least to hit the area in the center of the chest: she swings, holding the greatsword with both hands on the hilt and shifting her entire body weight as she strikes, to impart more power.
As he saw the bright blaze glowing from the automaton's mouth Dimitri instinctively rolled away, managed to avoid the worst of the fire, though he still felt the scorching of the flame jumping on to him. He cursed, unsheathed his shortsword, gave it a whirl as his single eye fixed on the spot Triston was pointing at, then slashed out with a glinting flash.
As the flame's burn over Hadi in his hiding place, he manages to avoid the direct blast, but still feels the heat start to singe his flesh. Thinking quickly he whistles a quick high-low two note beat as some of the flame absorbs into him. Listening to Khessa he realizes it would be best to spread out, and quickly side steps around the machine. Once flanking it he releases the fire energy he'd absorbed into his whip, striking out at the strange machine.
Attack: 6 Damage: 11 (if hits, the d6 in the roll is fire dmg)
Tristan with a 17 Dexterity saving throw, you successfully dodge the fire breath, taking only 13 points of fire damage. Hadi with a 21 Dexterity saving throw (rolled privately) you successfully dodge the fire breath, taking only half damage, you then cast absorb elements as a reaction, gaining fire resistance, ultimately taking only 6 points of fire damage. T'bitha creates a bell overhead of the Rubystone Apex Sentinel. (11 Wisdom save)1 necrotic damage vs DC 13 Wisdom saving throw Khessa you swing your greatsword with all your might, and land a solid blow into the body of the automaton dealing 12 points of damage. Dimitri with a 17 Dexterity saving throw, you successfully dodge the fire breath, taking only 13 points of fire damage. You take a swing with your shortsword but between the fire that just struck you and the wall between you and the automaton, you unfortunately miss.
As all of you take your turn, you notice the dim glow of the faerie fire on the Topazstone Warden Sentinel disappears as the darkness swallows it. (It continues moving away from you, paying no mind to what is happening)
Tristan! You're free to begin round 2 of combat!
Spoiler contains updated combat stats (feel free to peak!)
Tristan attempts to skirt round to the side of the beast so that another area attack would have to be more selective with it's targets, then reinitiates his attack. His blade still crackles with the same energy , leaving a glowing arc of incandescence in it's wake. The glowing rune imprinted on the creature glows and pulses as his blow falls.
Attack: 24 Damage: 10 + 6 (Hex) + 1 (Crimson rite) If the creature moves before the beginning of my next turn, it takes another 2 thunder damage.

Tristan you strike with [Tooltip Not Found]. Hitting it hard where the collar bone would be for a living creature, dealing 17 points of damage. As you hit it, you all see the faint pulsing light from the crystal in its body begin to pulse slower and slower. This automaton appears to be very badly hurt.
Rubystone Apex Sentinel rolled a 3 on its fire breath recharge (rolled in game log), since it doesn't regain its fire breath, it lunges towards Khessa attempting to bite her, then turns and swings its claws at Tristan.

Hadi, T'bitha, Khessa, and Dimitri round 2 for all of you! You are welcome to take your turn!
Spoiler contains updated combat stats (feel free to peak!)
As soon as the monstrous construct tries to bite her, Khessa reacts instinctively, slamming the pommel of her heavy two-handed weapon against the metal skull; the sharp teeth lose some of their strength and fail to tear apart the rings of her chainmail. The Rubystone Apex Sentinel just has the time to turn to claw at Tristan, maybe looking for a seemingly less armored target, as the blonde arcane warrior tries to finish it off with a side swipe (still aiming at the weak point revealed by Tristan), exclaiming: "Leave him alone, you rusty beast! Let's fight metal against metal, your teeth against my armor, if you dare!"
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
His whip swinging back and nicking his thumb ((damn nat 1 last time)), Hadi decides it's time to go for something a bit more sure at the dumb creature in front of it. Pointing the finger of his other hand at it he sends a mind sliver to hopefully disrupt it's processes.
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
With a roll of his wrist Dimitri produced a dart between his long fingers, hidden inside his cuff. Aiming among the melee, if Khessa distracted the automaton enough, he could have a good shot... with a swift throw, a dark shadow sliced through the air.
Hadi you cast mind sliver on the Rubystone Apex Sentinel. Intelligence saving throw: 6 vs DC 14 or 6 psychic damage T'bitha you cast healing word healing Tristan with 4points of healing. Khessa you swing again with your greatsword dealing another 11 points of damage to the Rubystone Apex Sentinel. Dimitri your dart bounces off the Rubystone Apex Sentinel, not hitting hard enough to deal damage. (If you remember, after combat is over you can attempt to recover half your used ammunition)
The Topazstone Warden Sentinel has effectively left initiative, as it continues to move away.

Khessa sees that, despite her last strike having landed, the construct is still somehow functional. "Maybe it's not that rusty, I must give it that... it's hard to take down." Fearing that the stubborn opponent might rage on the already greviously wounded elf... and possibly kill him, the blonde arcane warrior attempts a last-ditch return blow to bring it down: "Take THIS too for good measure, staggering product of a drunk blacksmith!"
(OOC: Khessa is using her Action Surge to take another action in her round 2 turn - another attack with her greatsword)
As Khessa pushes through her physical limitations, and forces another swing with her greatsword striking true, and even more solidly than ever before, the Rubystone Apex Sentinel begins to lunge at you, Khessa, before falling to the ground. You all watch the arcane maelstrom inside the central crystal dissipate, and the crystal turn cloudy and dull.
Since the Topazstone Warden Sentinel has moved far enough away, combat is effectively over. After everything calms, and you begin to further take in your surroundings, the dark forest has once again grown silent.
Having never seen this type of construct before, Hadi goes up to it to begin poking around ((investigation 19)) at it and its crystals to see what he can learn.
Having never seen this type of construct before, Hadi goes up to it to begin poking around ((investigation 19)) at it and its crystals to see what he can learn.
Khessa first worries about the health of her fellow adventurers: "Dimitri, Hadi, Tristan ... how are you? If anyone needs it, T'bitha seems able to do something about the injuries..." (she just saw her cast a spell that partially healed Tristan's wounds).
Then, seeing Hadi studying the construct, she joins him, fascinated: "These blades on its back... can you imagine, if who built it had put them on his stomach instead? This thing could have plowed fields without getting tired, in farmers' place! Who knows how many cabbage fields he could have prepared in one day?"
Hadi, you poke around the seemingly unmoving remains of this automaton. Khessa, you watch as he does so, taking in the same things he notices, and pointing out a few things he misses. The first thing you notice is the large 5 foot crystal that inhabits the core of this thing. You don't need to be a jeweler to know it's worth a lot of money. Unfortunately, when it seemingly died, the crystal went cloudy and dull, ruining the brilliance it once held. The next thing you notice is that the steel protecting the crystal and forming the body of automaton is of an ancient elven design, or at least partially. You know the steel is elven steel, but it's heavily modified compared to the elven steel created today. In particular, the steel is red and it appears there are flakes of precious ruby gemstones in the steel itself, that somehow survived the forging process of the automaton.
Getting a better look at this automaton now, as it continues to not move, it almost resembles a small wingless dragon. From horned head to tail, it stretches almost 10 feet, with blades running down it's back similar to that of a stegosaurus (for player reference).
Hadi
There are stories of the ancient blacksmiths of A'yeth Taersi, who created an alliance with the Druids of Wraek. They used elven steel with the wood of Wraek to create very strong and powerful automatons. Very little is actually known about the capabilities of the automatons, or if they were ever even created, but it is thought perhaps, this is how the Warforged came about. If a living sentient creature was ever to be created, and not by a divine itself, it would make sense it would be made of extremely high quality metal and the bark of a deity.
Khessa
You know of elven steel because it's extremely high quality, and the people of Twardens would often spend all their money attempting to purchase farming equipment made of elven steel. Farming equipment made of elven steel is said to last several centuries, before beginning to break down. And because of that, it is very expensive.
Khessa notes, widening her blue eyes in surprise: "Hey guys! But this construct is made of very precious raw materials! You know? It is made of elven steel! It's extremely high quality steel; the people of my village would often spend all their money attempting to purchase farming equipment made of elven steel, because farming equipment made of that steel lasted several centuries, before beginning to break down! Maybe we should take some of this with us, it should be of some value!"
Then, realizing what T'bitha is chanting, the tall adventurer simply recovers some construct part, putting them in her backpack, and listens, almost hypnotized.
"It's the first time I've heard a drow's mouth utter the words 'light' and 'love'..." she thinks "This drow priestess is truly unlike any other drow I've ever met"
After the ritual is finished and the prodigious healing of almost all the wounded is manifested, the blonde warrior-mage approaches the priestess of Eilistraee, puts her hands on her shoulders, looks her with admiration in her eyes and confesses: "At first I had a hard time trusting you, T'bitha... You still don't know this, but other drow I've ever dealt with have behaved incredibly worse than you do... But now that I have a little better idea of what you worship and have seen with my own eyes how you take care of us, rest assuret that I will spare neither my magic nor my steel nor my blood to defend you".
Then, to the others: "Well, now? Where should continue our search?"
