Sparhawk gathers his shield and warhammer. He swims to Vars lifeless body and holds him like he lost a family member in his arms. He calls on his goddess for healing as he touches his lifeless body. He looks around hearing Bjorns voice. He swims to Lir and gets an air bubble
Sparhawk gets the sense there is no more essence of undeath within the ship. As you move throughout the last remaining rooms you finally come upon the Captains quarters. Inside this once luxurious state room you find the remains of Sorshas former Captain, tied to a chair. In what remains of his chest you can see the glint off of a golden tubular object. It seems the Kraken was under going a mutiny when it was struck down by a real Kraken.
Taking inspiration from the Octopus and its strange use of magical current, Lir traces the lines of current in the water and casts Shape Water to cause a natural bioluminescence to light their immediate surroundings.
Shape Water.
You choose an area of water that you can see within range and that fits within a 5-foot cube. You manipulate it in one of the following ways: [...]
You change the water’s color or opacity. The water must be changed in the same way throughout. This change lasts for 1 hour.
Frangipani was slightly confused by Sparhawk...but then she often was...Vars was dead, she liked Vars but he was gone now.....as she swam around gulping down chunks of octopus she noted the others had gone below and followed along.....then circled back and ate the rest of Reginald before joining them and enjoying Lirs light show.
Sparhawk now understands why they met their former captain.
He looks for something personal from the captain to take with him a pin , broach, dagger.
He unties the captains body, releasing him and performs a brief burial rites. Their spirits released, the circle closed on this cursed crew. In Sparhawks paladin code, balance restored
“gather what we can, including the treasure” and he motions for the crew to head up
There is a small chest in the Captains armoir, but it seems to have been previously pillaged, likely by the mutinous crew, the golden cylinder is the only thing of worth in here. Upon closer inspection it seems to be some sort of scroll case, and is expertly crafted, you estimate it is worth at least 200gp, maybe more. The outside is covered with etched scenes from some culture unknown to you.
As for the source of the undead, you have heard of sailor curses against mutineers and from your religious teachings you know the Gods of the oceans do not like those who go against their Captains unjustly
You have no more issue swimming up the rest of the way to the surface without the magical currents to thwart your progress. As you near the surface you see a small shaft heading off to the north west barely covered by the lowered water level. Once you reach the surface you can see carved steps about 20’ above the water level which leads to a ante- chamber with another more pronounced stairway carved leading up towards light.
[Is the scroll case like, the murder weapon? Or was it part of him somehow?]
Dropping the empty chest onto the stone floor, Bjorn raises his gaze up to Sparhawk and the crew, and for a long moment says nothing. There's a distinct beat, the phantom sound of what could've been a perfectly timed "I told you so," but he doesn't say it. Instead, he slumps down and sits against the wall, drenched and exhausted.
"Right, I think it's safe to say we're lost," he croaks. "Up ahead could be the way we came in, or it could be some fresh horror we ain't seen yet. Before we go any further on, can anybody scratch out a map? I can go back under and measure out the distance we've moved underground."
Sparhawk looks dejected and exhaused. His normally somewhat cheerful disposition gone. He seems heavy, as if carrying a burden.
"Lets get out of this accursed place and get some fresh air." Without further thought or waiting for his friends, he gathers his belongings and starts heading for the exterior of the cave.
When the rest of the party gets to the surface, they see that the huge half orc has already started setting up camp and has made a small fire. He smiles at them wearily, and starts preparing some food to warm their spirits. He doesn't seem to have much to say, his eyes red, perhaps he had been crying but there are no tears now as he likely pulled himself together.
(As time permits and pending some conversations)
As the evening goes on, he strips his armor and weapons, cleans them of the salt water rigorously, and then sharpens the blades with a whetstone and oils and polishes his normally well kept armor until it is shining once again.
Lir walks away, gazes over the body of water and gives thanks to his God.
Vars had mocked him for his nature as a sea elf, insisting that he would be stranded on land far from the water
Yet Vars had died in this deep pool while Lir had thrived.
Before the trance takes him, Lir whispers the name of his God in obeisance and is delighted at slight sense of chilled air that greets him as he bows low.

Frangipani swam around for a while longer enjoying the water after so long on dry land, then slipped back into her birth form and headed to meet the others.
She frowned when she saw Sparhawk but patted him awkwardly on the head, " Good night. Wake me for my watch."
" The food looks good, but I am quite full. thankyou."

Sparhawk is pale as a ghost, sadness in his face
“He’s dead my friend, I have failed him”
after a long pause, he looks at the remnants of his crew, Bjorn, Frangipani, Lir…
Reginald?
“Let’s finish searching and head to the surface”
”I wanna know the origin of this crew turning to undead”
“But we need to get out of here soon
Thoughts?”
he releases his Divine sense again to see if he detects any other undead.

Frangipani skimmed about on the surface then darted off to look at the semi-submerged shaft....
Perception ( Darksight 60) : 19
( appears to have been the murder weapon )
Taking a peak up a little ways up the shaft, it feels to you like a connection shaft to the pudding pool

Without further thought or waiting for his friends, he gathers his belongings and starts heading for the exterior of the cave.
The scrawny elf bends down to lift Bjorn upright and begin moving them both forward.
"Keep moving. We stop moving, we die." He flashes his sharp teeth. "Like the shark."
Here is the water layer map again showing the stairs and the side tunnel.

( you left via the stairs correct?)
Yes
