Vin nods in thanks to Shionne seeming to think a bow might be polite he does so but awkwardly like he isn't sure how far to bow. "Thank you. I'll make sure to use them well. Also, yes please if you could show me how to properly use them." He will get instructions of the items and how to use them. After doing so Gweyn asks for the powder and the young man says "Sure. Here you go." and hands over the dust of sneezing and chokings to him.
Vin looks to Muir as he reports how long it takes to go to Hokum and says "Okay. So, according to Nef... that means half a day is our limit. She thinks they will send the redcaps to... umm... stop us." The large black hound gives a gruff bark "...Umm... less then half a day. The not-deer are their eyes right? So the time started ticking the moment we killed one." Vin looks to the others and that is when Iver shows up with Elthana. At first Vin doesn't take not but he eventually spots the ring with the blue rock and leaf design. He seems relieved. Also pauses a moment when he hears the man's name.
Vin smiles with a bit of hope in his eyes. Nef even seems a bit delighted as they shift their attention to the newly arriving guard. Vin says "I'm glad you're okay. I have a message from your sister, 'Guards be damned, his sister Helena needs to know he's safe.'" vin delivers the message and adds "She's doing fine. Seems to have taken a position with the guards. She's staying there and I told her I'd look for you, so no worries about her coming. She was really nice. I don't want her to be sad so we got to make sure we get you home to her." Nef comes over to Vin, brushes up against the side of the young man as he pets her, then the hound looks at Iver with her red eyes. Vin smiles with a little chuckle saying "She says she'll kill you if you die before getting back to your sister." Nef woofs at Iver in confirmation.
Nef looks to Elthana and woofs annoyedly when asked about tracking the not-deer but begins sniffing at the air and around the camp to see if they can catch the scent of the creature on the wind or even if it's been nearby or keeping an eye on them.
"I'm glad to hear Helana is safe, I should get message to her as soon as I can. Even once the second Not-Deer is taken care of I can't risk leaving these folk to return to her, we must figure out a way to get word out, to get help here... If you're going after the Not-Deer tonight should you need some backup?" Iver recoils slightly from the brush of Neferox and gives a wry smile in return for her words, given through Vin.
Neferox, on command, finds a faint smell of the Not-Deer's scent, she turns and glances toward Terry, shionne and Gewyn before she faces out west of the camp and gives a low growl.
Sam considers inquiring with Shionne about the bag he took off the dead Faerie but just cannot do it. He's not the sort to be asking help from the uppity-ups. Besides, he gets along great with Órga and has already stumbled upon how it is used. Anything else he needs will just come from trial and error, won't it?
"Well, let's have at it then?" Sam calls out to his fellows once the chit chat and such seems to have ended. He jerks his head to Muir in indication that he should come with and gives an indifferent shrug about Iver. Sam certainly isn't one to tell another they cannot come and risk their life... But the guard had been guarding these people, he's not one to look to weaken their resources either. It can be on Iver's own head to make the decision.
With a whistle the lion is up and at Sam's side and the pair are looking to Neferox for direction...
Elthana turns to Vin, "How does Nef know that the not-deer are the eyes for the redcaps and that they are now coming? And that we have half a day before they come? So if we move this group after we eliminate the not-deer to the west as they have requested, will that keep them away from the redcaps if they are coming?" She looks concerned as things aren't as cut and dry as they just seemed if this hound of his is right.
Once Vin answers, she is ready to follow the annoyed dog to where she is leading them to the not-deer.
Vin seems a bit uncertain as Nef tracks the scent. The young man looks over to the large black hound who pauses and looks back at the group. Vin seems to wince a bit but eventually turns to Elthana and says "She says: it's because of how they herd people so perfectly that no one escapes. To be so thorough requires sight beyond normal. To catch all these beings of different races and so completely cut off communication of an entire town plus apprently beings from another world requires detection and knowledge of some kind. If not the not-deer then assume they know by other means." Vin looks to nef who nods and huffs then seems to go over to one of the heals and woods at them showing a wound from fighting the notdeer before. Clearly expecting healing from on of the nearby healers. Vin seems a bit nervous as he relayed the info to Elthana. Once nef gets healing they will bark at the party and seems ready to track the last notdeer.
Muir who had been silently watching and listening to the conversation had ritually cast speak with animals to listen to what nef was saying to Vin. He was curious. The dog didn't seem like a dog he had ever laid eyes on going from village to village helping those in need. It was much too big and something about its aura seemed off to Muir. He snaps to upon hearing that Nef needed tending to. Muir looks at Vin "May I tend to your.....dog?" Not waiting for a response Muir bends over and holds out his hand to allow Nef to smell as he would a normal dog. He reaches into his bag with his other hand and pulls out what typical dogs like to munch on and offers it to Nef. He then speaks to the dog to see if they understand one another "Hello one called Nef. I am Muir. A druid of the realm. You look to be wounded. Would you like me to tend to your wound?" Muir proceeds to pull out a bandage and a salve for light wounds. He looks at the more serious wounds and begins to glow brightly. A chalice forms in his hand as he begins to poor the contents over Nef's wounds healing word
Muir speaks in full sentences to see how much Nef understands. Typically when talking to what he would consider normal animals, he keeps he words and sentences short but with Nef he can't help his curiosity.
Sam turns to Elthana. "Sounds reasonable... Doesn't sound like the truth," he says and then gives a shrug. "Not the whole truth, anyway. Think the kid edits as well as translates."
"I think they prefer the full Neferox," Sam says idly to Muir as the trunked on is chatting to the beast.
Mostly Sam is anxious to get a move on... Daylight is wasting.
Daylight is indeed inevitably vanishing, as Sam looks up he predicts no more than two hours of usable natural light before evening takes hold.
Shionne, satisfied in her passage if information suddenly looks exhausted, she lowers to the floor, her golden sheen dulling slightly as the swirl of leaves covering her, slow to a lazy flow. Terry helps her back to the large tree, where she steps in becoming one with the thick trunk once more. Before Terry bids you all farewell and good luck, he walks up to Gewyn and whispers something in his ear conspiratorially, after a nod Terry turns to the group "I will not be joining you on this part of the journey, I have things to tend to here, I hope you return soon", Goldsheaf interjects at this point too, "the preparations to move will be underway, it may take some time but we should be able to set off at first Light" she looks directly at Sam at this point, glancing toward Elthana too, she states "I'm sure you understand we need to also be prepared for if you do not return..."
Muir has an interesting time, whilst he can now understand Neferox and her seemingly constant state of protective aggression, he also hears the lion by Sam's side, despite its large powerful and undoubtedly adult body, it speaks like an excited child, every so often looking up at Sam in admiration before realising that Sam cannot understand its low growls and excited yips, it practically prances alongside him as the group set off.
Upon entering the forest proper once more, the group are back to the familiar cracks of rotten tree and the slick wet moss covered roots under foot. Following Neferox's nose they begin the trudge back west where they came from, but their heading takes a more northern direction than where they first entered the forest that morning, for Muir this is entirely new forest as he had entered from the south east.
Vin talks with Iver as Muir heals Nef. Vin says to Muir "Oh! yes please. If you could heal her injuries I'd really appreciate it." Vin then nods towards Iver and says "It's up to you. We only just got here. I would like to ask more about Goldsheaf, the survivors and you but we got to act fast right? What can you tell me about the attacks here? You've been fighting stuff like tree-monsters right? Any tips?"
Nef on the other hand growls a bit when called Nef as if in warning. However the hound exposes their injured shoulder to the druid showing a particularly nasty gore wound from their fight with the not-deer. They seem to ignore it despite the wound bleeding down their black fur making it seem matted and clumped. Neferox for their part seems content to let the elephant treat them as the magical power is poured onto the wound by Muir the light of which seems to seep into the wound making flesh and fur heal alike. The wound doesn't fully heal but it heals enough that she seems satisfied with the treatment and gets up to lead the way into the forest.
For Muir with Speak with animals
She indeed seems to understand what you say but merely lacks the physical ability to talk. Her voice is feminine, filled with arrogance and pride. She doesn't seem to care if Muir understand her or not. in fact, she seems to expect you don't but it doesn't matter to her. If he reveals he can understand her she suddenly seems to take interest in Muir and looks at him with piercing red glowing eyes.
"The only one allowed to call me Nef is Vin. You will address me as Neferox or I will find out how your trunk tastes."
When he offers to heal she replies "If you don't heal me I'll have someone more competent do so." She then allows them to heal her.
As Sam reiterates what Nef explained she nods towards the big man and looks back at Muir "Sam is wise." She looks at her healed wound and back to Muir "It seems you serve a purpose. Don't hinder Vin or better yet serve him and perhaps your name will have meaning."
Neferox leads the way into the forest following the scent of the not-deer. She seems in her element as hunts her pray. A sense of joy is seen by her wagging tail. Vin follows, next to Iver if he joined otherwise Vin trails a bit behind Nef as she leads the way.
As Terry finishes speaking in Gewyn's ear, he looks at Terry, then Shionne's resting place. He nods and smiles, but when he turns to walk away, the smile becomes tired.
"Okay, if we have to do this, let it be while there is still light." With that, he sets off after the others
Muir smiles at the ill-tempered "dog" and nods "I will do my best to aid Vincent in his journey and if you require healing I am happy to aid you as well". He gets up and looks at the others...."Shall we then?" Before following Nef....erox into the woods
Assuming Muir and this Iver seem outfitted properly Sam will suggest he’ll take up the rear position. “I’m a bit clumsy after all. And besides, if something comes up behind us…” Sam trails off with a shrug. “Animal noses and ears front and back, if nothing else.” Truthfully ge just wants to keep an eye on the new additions but animals do have keener senses… generally.
Iver brings with him a sword and shield, his armour not complete as the missing attachments around his joints make his movements quieter than a full set of marbled legion plate, he gives a nod of readiness to Sam as he takes his place in the marching order with Vin, in answer to Vin's questions he gives a shrug, "they're living trees, and they damage like trees, we've tried not to burn them because that gives away our position, but hacking and slashing works, the only difference between killing these things and chopping down a regular tree is that these ones fight back."
For the next half an hour the group follows Neferox's nose, Órga seems happy to be moving around but squints their eyes in dissaproval at Neferox every so often. The trees get thicker, the further the group move from the clearing, you also begin to realise how close to the mountains up north you are as it becomes very apparent to those who aren't wearing the proper footwear, how boggy and wet the forest floor is, the extra moisture having run off the mountainside and made the parts further in front of you into a swampy mire.
(Everyone roll perception, this will be a group check)
Muir smiles at Sam "Would you mind if I walk with you towards the back? I like to focus on keeping people alive. Plus I don't want to slow us down when I have to stop to pick the various plants and fungi I need for my salves"
“As you will,” Sam replies with a half shrug. “I won’t be letting the front get out of sight though. Just don’t want my lumbering to mess up their tracking is all…”
Sam squints and gives Muir a bit of the side eye when he mentions gathering ingredients. “That may best be left til we’re not hunting deadly malformed beasts from unknown faerie lands, no?”
Muir smiles "Indeed you are correct Sam but look at this here..... This here is a Hericium Erinaceus or better known as Lion's Mane. It is widely believed to help with mood amongst other things."Muir quickly cuts it from a tree "There we are.. only a few seconds and I have what I need"
As Sam finishes talking Neferox growls, cutting off any response. She stops still and whips around on her heel barking at the group, effectively stopping them in their tracks and alerting them to a sound around the party, what some saw as normal mundane vines in front of Nef and near to the back of the group suddenly begin to move, twisting and lashing around as they form into two vaguely humanoid shapes.
As they stand it becomes apparent that the group is under attack.
Elthana moves to the NE one square, then straight N 3 more squares to flank the monster with Nef. Once into position, she first gives a roundhouse kick, a punch then a side kick to the creature.

As Elthana steps up and moves around the vine blight she steps in front of one tree which lashes out with a heavy trunk smashing into the ground, luckily missing her by a whisker. She lands every single punch and kick on the humanoid form or writhing vines, smashing it to ribbons, it's tattered remains go flying over Neferox and Vin. though this new enemy a huge sentient tree rears its branches back up and is directly at Elthana's back.
Sam unleashes two powerful blows to the adversary closest to him before it can fully form, it holds fast though after being beaten backwards and is still ready to fight.
