"A powerful, and unfortunate weapon, for myself at least", Drexon replies. "I do have some innate magic in me yes. So I shall never be able to approach the sword?", he says frowning and reaching out for the book.
He does indeed make telepathic contact with Cob, and answers, "If we can work out how to turn it off for you and I. Neither one of us would be able to get close to it. Dvark and Karm are also magic users. Perhaps Eremoz could retrieve and master it?".
He starts to peruse the pages of the book, looking for instructions or insight into its use.
"You can find it inside the journal," Zelena says, giving you the journal, "but from what I've read, the blade cannot be wielded by someone who is not of pure heart. It also cannot be wielded by someone with the ability to cast magic. I'm not sure about approaching it, but I remember reading an account of wizards and sorcerers shying away from it and protesting that it felt uncomfortable to be near the blade. It's somewhere in the middle of the journal, I think."
Drexon, you peruse the book as supper is served. You turn around the middle of the journal and skim the content. It is indeed as Zelena said. There is a journal entry.
The 6072nd Year of the Court, 9th Celestial, 4th Day,
The weapon bestowed by Lord Ynana has proven to be useful in dealing with the aberrations and monstrosities of the Hellish Chaos. It slides through them like a hot knife through butter. The smell, unfortunately, is not pleasant. This is a weapon that burns and cauterizes. Still, it is a boon that has brought our legion forward once more this day. But, I have learned a weakness of a kind. It is... fussy picky.
One of the fresh soldiers from Saikhan, no older than mine own boy fighting down south with Lord Ausvic, whined about his explosive headache at the end of the day. This was not the first instance. Many had complained the same thing over the past few days since I took command of this legion. The elder guards, paladins sworn to the Lady Ysadora, also swore up and down the encampment of having the confounding spell cast on them. It was the Treant's men that clued us to the root of the problem. It was the blade -- my blade.
We will test it on the morrow. The Treant's men speculated that Lord Ynana put a blessing and a curse on the blade so it won't fall to the enemy's hand.
The 6072nd Year of the Court, 9th Celestial, 7h Day,
The campaign went to hell. It has been three days of non-stop battle. I have yet to take a sleep for more than 4 hours. These soldiers of the Hellish Chaos are learning and adapting faster than we can counter. One of theirs, this spectral looking thing, was not what they seem. The elder guards failed to turn them, which means they were not undead despite their translucent and ghostly appearance. We would have to find a counter for them, but so far we had found none except unrelenting barrage of attack. Some of them were weak to light, which made Lord Ynana's blade invaluable during this past three days. These new creatures seemed to fear it.
The Treant's men's speculation, however, was correct. Lord Ynana's blade carry a curse and a blessing. It will create unease to creatures that wielded or are created by magic. Unfortunately, this means a fraction of our legion has to fight far away from me to function properly. They claim to have headaches or unexplained fear whenever they are near the blade. The weaker solders even as much as faint when in prolonged contact with the blade's aura, which extends roughly 100 feet around it. Unfortunately, this means the only one that can wield the blade is someone without a single drop of magic in them. Fortunately, there are some exceptions. Mine own squire, Grendle, a cleric of the Lord Ynana, is capable of wielding the blade to a lesser degree. The same cannot be said for his lover, Hiram, a cleric of Lady Ysadora and our main healer at camp. This also means mine own son and daughter will not be able to wield the blade due to their magical prowess.
"This is fascinating", Drexon says he reads the pages of the journal. "The Clarent heirloom certainly was both a blessing and a curse".
He looks up at Lady Selena, "Not that it is particularly relevant to your birthday party. Are you looking forward to it? I was thinking I might stay close to you during the event, try and blend in rather than look like a body guard"
"Yes to turning 18, but not to the party," Zelena says. "I am not one to throw parties. I have a family within the estate and that would be enough for me. Unfortunately, Mother wants to make a show out of it. To be perfectly honest, I am now more excited about finding the lost blade of my ancestor."
"It will make the transition your father planned easier if you are to find the blade, Zelena," David comments.
"That's true enough. The blade has been a symbol of leadership in the family. Every single head of the Clarent's house has wielded the blade. At the very least, the blade will allow us to unlock the vault underneath the catacomb so we don't have to rely on Mother's wealth anymore."
Zelena is quiet for a long moment before nodding her assent. You can see David sighing in relief slightly behind her, ever vigilant.
"How about an equivalent exchange?" Zelena offers. "I promise not to ditch any bodyguard assigned to me, but in exchange I want your help finding the blade under the lake. The blade will add some legitimacy to my father's plan to renounce his headship of the house and pass it down to me tomorrow. With the blade, my mother cannot really protest the change lest she incur the wrath of the ancestors and the rumours that will bloom in public. If what you felt is true, then that means we can map the perimeter of the blade's aura and pinpoint its location. Mayhap we can also finally explore and close the access into the estate via the crevasse."
Drexon listens to Lady Zelena's plan with interest, and more than a little skepticism, looking to Eremoz for his reaction.
"I could certainly help map the perimeter, but who would you send in to the crevasse to retrieve it? And when would you think to perform such an undertaking? With the party tomorrow, we cannot do anything to endanger you or your family", he asks.
He gives a winning smile, "And as much as I like your negotiation style, trying to get us to help you whilst only offering us the ability to do the job we already have been asked to do does not seem to weigh at all in our favour. Speaking of favours, perhaps if you are to be the new head of House Clarent, a favour each could be the payment?".
"After supper?" Zelena asks. "I can dive in. I feel I should be the one to dive in and recover it."
"Well, I cannot give you the blade, if that is what you are going for," Zelena says firmly. "The blade is an heirloom and relic of House Clarent. Regardless of how good you are at your job, I would not give the blade to strangers. However, perhaps I can offer you a sponsorship in the future just like the Clarent sponsors the Scarlet Barony now. I don't think you will stay in Mantagard long, so I can provide transport to a location of your choice should you need it. David also knows some people who perhaps know some information that you need. In the future, you can have House Clarent to fall back on during dire times."
As she speaks, she begins getting a little bit more frazzled and manic. She lets out a deep breath and calms herself down for a moment. For a brief moment, you can see an impetuousness in Zelena's eyes and gestures. Despite her friendly demeanour, you begin to understand that this is a woman who is cunning yet a little bit reckless. Given the chance, she will dive head-first into the lake to find the blade on her own. This is a very important matter to her and you get the feeling that there is no dissuading her decision; if not today, she will do it tomorrow during her party and damn the consequences.
"You do not understand how important this is for me and my family," Zelena starts. "The blade, the Lightbringer, is a gift from the Light Bearer. It is a powerful weapon and a symbol of House Clarent. It is a sign of our nobility and long ancestry in the service of the Light Bearer. I -- the House Clarent -- will be indebted to you if you are to help me recover this precious relic. You can ask me anything and I will use everything in my power to realize it. But, let's start with a sponsorship. We are still only a House and not a Mayor or Minister. We don't have unlimited money and resources."
Drexon looks at David, "Do you have anything to say about this plan? Encouraging Lady Zelena to go diving into unknown waters doesn't sound particularly safe, especially when we can't follow".
He turns to Lady Zelena, "Your terms do sound appealing though. I wouldn't have asked for the sword though, as you know, I cannot even get close to it so it is of no use to me".
He looks to the others, and makes a telepathic link to Eremoz, "I think you would be the only one that the sword would not work on".
Eremoz looks to Drexon and nods. “If my companions are able to get a good idea of the location, I should be able to retrieve it. I’d like to get a good look of the crevasse anyways.”
"Delegating is a trait that many people do, Zelena," David nods at Drexon's words. "If you wish, I can dive in myself and give the blade to you. It is my duty as the custodian of the estate. Have some patience, niece. Let me and these people do our work."
Zelena is quiet for a long moment before nodding her assent. "Very well. My apologies for my... excitement. My family has been looking for the blade for nearly two decades. My mother never cared for it. My father gave up after a few years due to the shame of losing such a precious artefact. I have started my own quest for the blade since I turned fourteen. It has been a journey."
"A difficult one, especially because my niece insisted on following the practice of the Papacy, which has been banned from Mantagard for nearly fifty years after a corrupt cardinal nearly burned half the city in an attempt to commune with the Light Bearer," David adds. "Due to my half-breeding, I have elected to opt out of being involved with the search. Diving in, perhaps also checking the state of the crevasse, is the least I could do."
"Then, if you are amenable, I would like David to accompany your dive, mister..." Zelena pauses for a moment and lets out a strained and awkward laugh. "Oh, I just realized I didn't know any of your names. How inappropriate of me as a host."
"I have less problem with Eremoz and Lord David retrieving the sword. Especially seeing as we are at your service until after the party, Lord David", Drexon admits, filling in the missing name for Lady Zelena.
"And I am Drexon, Lady Zelena", he says with an inclination of the head.
Cob flies up into the air, gives Zelena a bow, while at the same time using druidcraft to make a small cloudburst of rose petals fall down from near the ceiling.
"Wonderful, well met, sirs, my name is Zelena Clarent," Zelena says with a bright smile. "Are you a company of your own? You seem to know each other well."
Zelena turns to David and gives him a nod. The man moves to the kitchen and comes out with a selection of soup and roasts for each of you. It is fulfilling after spending the day outside. The weather has been getting colder and the soup warms your entire body.
"Do you have any dietary restriction?" Zelena asks. "I forgot to ask. One of the staff do not eat meat and fish due to their chosen faith and tradition, so, if any of you have the same preference, we will swap out the meal. That will also mean you won't be able to eat anything tomorrow because mother insisted to have a smorgasbord of venison and lamb to curry favour with the mayor."
"It's all fine with me", Drexon replies and dips a spoon into the soup. "We have travelled together for a while now, but we have never discussed the formation of a company. It's been more informal up to now, but we are certainly bonded by shared experience, so it isn't the worst idea. I am not sure as to the benefits though".
He looks to the others to see whether they have any strong opinions on the matter.
“Haven’t thought much about anything formal. Even if we never formalize it, we are bound together.” Eremoz tries to eat in a polite manner in order to not seem rude. He is only partially successful. “Venison and lamb sound fantastic.”
"I don't think there are any, Zelena," David says. "At least not at this time. The adventuring or exploring companies all around the world were disbanded a few decades ago. There's just no more land to explore since the people of Montecarexpat fully re-integrated into the worldwide community."
"But some still exist," Zelena comments. "I heard the Order of the Silver Lily is still around. I suspect that old man from that occult shop -- what's its name again? something with hexes -- he's one of them, I'm sure. He always has some interesting things in his shop. There's also the Lamplighter Consortium based far south. I heard they killed some sort of swamp monstrosities there."
"I admit it was profitable. Having an official company means you have the backing of the government. However, that was when the Explorer's Guild was still active. There would be missions to take and new land with new riches to find. Now, the guild is defunct and acts only as an administrative body within the Militarum. Many of the companies disbanded themselves. The one that still exists only do so from the wealth they accumulated and branched out to other sectors. Espionage agencies, crime syndicates, merchant companies, and even private security or military groups. That was why your grandfather backed the Scarlet Barony. They sometimes helped settle local problems and those they helped often provided donations. They also gave House Clarent a percent of their earnings in exchange for new equipment and an official seal of House Clarent when needed. They also took quests from the Questing Hoard with better efficiency than other freelancers and mercenaries."
"I think we'll keep things informal, we tend to travel around a fair bit anyway", Drexon replies as he moves onto eating some lamb. "You know, I heard you shouldn't go swimming for an hour after eating a meal. How should we spend the time? We could play cards, or I have some other ideas for the party. Like making a surprise additions to the unfiforms of the staff and guards, just in case somebody had the idea of infiltrating them. They would stand out without the new addition".
"Of course we could just play cards. Did you know I played cards with Lady Reva the other day? Nice lady", he looks at the expressions of Lord David and Lady Zelena as he mentions their family member.
Insight (what do they think of Lady Reva?): 19+5=24
"I have not had the opportunity to play cards," Zelena says with a shake of her head. There is a fond smile on her lips when you mention Reva. "Mother dislikes it. That's why she also dislikes Aunt Reva as far as banning her from entering the estate despite this being her childhood home. I do love the time I spent with my aunt. She has a rather unique perspective on things. She was married off to pay some debt, but she came to love her husband. She even helped with his business. I only wish I would be as good as her in managing the house when I become its head."
"Let me know what you would like to use," David adds. "It is a good idea to add an impromptu armband, pin, or even colour-coded ribbon at the last minute just in case there are infiltrators. But, that would only work for the estate's staff and guards. I know their loyalty, and it is to me, to Daven, and to Zelena. What worries me is if this plan is leaked to the Pedrov guards. There is no telling whether their loyalty also extends to us or only to Leillana. They could be bought and possibly leak the plan to the possible infiltrators."
"As much as I hate to admit it, my mother is selfish. That selfishness also extends to her guards. I've heard rumours that some of them had taken a bribe for something -- or even bribed someone to deal with a problem. That is one of the reasons she always clashes with my aunt. My aunt always espouses the importance of our family's livelihood and happiness, while my mother is the opposite -- always vying for fame and wealth. The ribbon is a good idea, but it will fall apart if my mother's guard is as easily bought as I've heard."
"That is all good to know", Drexon replies. "In that case whatever we use must be given to the guards and staff at the last possible moment, and cannot be quick to replicate. It should also differ slightly between each group, so if something does happen we can identify those responsible. If possible, it should differ between individual but that might be more difficult".
He looks to Eremoz, "You are good with works of metal, any ideas what would fit the bill?"
