Rook wakes as the shield and other supplies that had filled his huge net of junk and then adorned the wall above his bunk come crashing down on him with the sudden shudder of the ship. "What the...!" yells the boy in his confusion as he tries to keep from falling from the top bunk but fails and comes tumbling to the floor with a pile of gear on top of him. He gets to his feet, grabs the shield and his rapier and pulls on his chain shirt quickly. The boy is a bit of a mess as he looks around to see what the more experienced sailors are doing. If nothing else, he dashes up towards the deck of the ship to see what is happening.
Dex (Acrobatics) check 15
Potential damage 5

OOC . I think the confusion is just if it is Dex (Acrobatics) or Str (Athletics), but it says Dex (Athletics) which doesn't match up. Rook has +2 on either so the result will be the same for him either way.
Bruz rolls out his bunk and smoothly onto to his feet before he has the chance to fully register he's standing. "Hull breach!?" He shouts, grabs his sword belt, and begins running toward steerage. Seeing Rook running the wrong way, Bruz grabs him and yells, "Steerage, lad, that's below!"
Initiative: 12
The DM did Dex(Athletics) to represent that the act he wanted us to roll for was a mix of strength and dexterity, so it wasn't as clean as rolling a straight up Dex(Acrobatics) or Str (Athletics) as would normally happen. This allows you to roll using your Dex modifier, but with proficiency if you happen to be proficient in Athletics.
OOC - either way, I'll try not to mix up the stats. I did want you to use Athletics over Acrobatics. Perhaps I'll just mention the skill directly next time, instead of adding the stat name. :D We are still waiting on a single player, I believe, to continue.

The beauty of 5th is you can do exactly what you did GK. It’s not a set in stone system. The suggested Stat/Skill combos are just general useage.
Ill use intimidate for example. Usually based on Charisma. Depending on the DM and the action in question you may very well use Strength if someone is trying to use sheer size to intimidate.
"Oh, right!" Rook follows close on Bruz's heels and watches for what to do.
OOC It feels appropriate that the young lad bombed his check on falling from the top bunk, took some solid damage for it, and was slow to recover and get a move on. Thanks dice, sometimes poor rolls are still the appropriate rolls! PS . I've stopped receiving email notifications from this thread. This seems to be an issue with DnD-B as it's happened before in my brief history here. Weird.

Carolinas flies out of his bunk and Archimedes flaps his wings and hovers to avoid taking a hit.

(Since you meant *Athletics*, that's what I'm rolling) Athletics (-1): 3
He is filled with a fleeting moment of vigor from his youth and is not phased at all by the jolt. Confident in his display of strength, he takes his staff and component pouch. Those that head down to the bottom deck will find two holes in the hull, one on each side of the cargo area (3). Inside the holes and blocking a lot of the water from coming into the ship are what appear to be watery tentacles, each about 6 inches in diameter, waving and probing the area. They extend and retract randomly, reaching out as far as the middle of the deck at their longest. Wisely the two guards stationed there overnight have retreated down the hallway, backed up by a number of roughly awoken crew. There is water leaking from each hole, but at this point it is only a trickle. The ship is not moving, not even from wave action. What will you do? Order of Initiative is Carolinas, tentacles, Bruz, Guard #2,Sebastian, guard #1 & Rook.
Those on deck see nothing. The ship is not moving as the surface waves move past it. Nothing unusual stirs the night, but you hear yelling from far below decks as you stand looking around.

OOC . Same here on holding off, especially since the DM had mentioned posting in order. In my experience, if one posts before the monsters but actually goes after them, often the original post doesn't make much sense or is rendered null and void. I'd very much like to avoid that in this campaign. (If we are to look at it by 'Rounds', in this case my preference would be that only Carolinas gets to go in round 1, the round then ending in the tentacle turn. Round two would then start with Bruz and end with Carolinas and then the tentacles once again.)
Just my opinion as a player who has had many an action and a good roll nullified because of poor management of the initiative order.
OOC - I like to keep initiative order so that I can also keep track of events in order of occurrence. We'll stick to init order for now.
The sparkling ray of energy strikes one of the tentacles and hits it squarely, but the icy field seems to fail to take a firm hold. The chosen tentacles forms a sheen of solid ice for about a foot of it's protruding length before both start to lash out wildly, trying to strike at whatever did the damage! No one being within range, the pseudopods smash slivers off of the wooden floor and walls, widening the holes in their fury! The flow of water into the ship has increased, but still not a gusher yet.

Bruz slips into a gap between two of the flailing tentancltes, drawing and slashing with his shortsword, followed by a rapid double kick. He then disengages from the tentacles, ducking and weaving their retaliatory strikes, while moving back to the spot he started from, out of their range.

Bruz and his swiftly moving sword attempt to hit the watery appendage but fails. His physical body seems to do far better, both hits striking accurately t the length of green-blue! The impacts from Bruz's attacks cause splashes of water to detach from the tentacles, adding a bit to the water on the floor of the deck, but seems to be replaced rapidly. One of the guards tries to duplicate Bruz's swift maneuver, dodging into sword range, striking out with his cutlass and also paring off a gallon or so of water, and getting out of range again, but the tentacle is able to strike a reactionary blow, knocking the guard into the deck!

his charred hand grasping toward the tentacles from where he stands forming a clenched fist speaking in some unknown language a rune of ancient magic apears on the tentacle. Raising his bow, he then launches and arrow at the flailing appendages.

[ooc]I applied Sneak bonus since a The guard is in melee distance. Can the tentacles actually see us or do we have adv on attacks?
Rook enters the bottom deck, lagging behind Bruz as he hauls his rapier and shield, and his eyes grow wide at the sight of the tentacles inside the ship. He takes a step forward but then stops, unsure of what to do, but watches Bruz's expert fighting style and, not being a total coward despite his youth, decides to follow his lead. He takes another step forward, but stops and decides to drop his rapier and shield in favor of the practice he needs with his new weapon, or perhaps his new burden? He focuses on the sword as Sal and Carolinas taught him and it appears in his hand, lantern light reflecting off of it's perfectly polished black and silver metal. The runes look alive as the light moves over them.
Still hesitant, the lad doesn't get right into the fray between tentacles such as Bruz's skill allows, but he takes a swing at the tentacle closer to him near it's end, hoping to chop the tip off. As he winds up, he hears a voice in his head, the same voice that seemed to represent Chauntee the night before, as it whispers a word he is not familiar with. (On a hit,) thunderous energy seems to surround the tentacle.
The boy doesn't seem quite as afraid as some may have expected. At least he has some gumption. He even calls out to Bruz "hey, any chance these things are undead?"
Attack: 23

Thunder Damage (on enemy movement only): 8
OOC . Booming blade with a little verbal component help from Chauntea since Rook still doesn't know what he's doing. Bonus Action to summon the sword. Assuming DM is ok with dropping his other junk as a free action, that stuff was mostly just for RP.
* Note* The tentacles are aware of you and have no problem zeroing in on anyone within reach.
Sebastian's arrow zips through the thicker part of a tentacle, causing a cascade of water to spurt through the exit wound, but it, too, seals up rapidly leaving the appendage not visibly harmed.
The second guard, emboldened by the added help that's arrived, steps over his fallen comrade and strikes out at the invader, parrying a couple of blows as he helps his buddy stagger out of range. The tentacles fail to connect to either crewman.
Rook's attack has some interesting results. The blade itself sears through the tentacle, looping off a section and it turns into plain water again when hitting the deck, but the vibrating aura that ripples down it's remaining length seems to make the section shake and shimmer. The next moment, the constantly waving arm explodes! The water from which it is composed erupting and splashing all over the interior of the ship! All that remains is a short length, but even as you watch, it starts lengthening...
*New Round* Sal and the rest can now roll initiative, coming down the stairs with the Captain and mates and others to join the fight.
