Hemlock hears the guttural goblin language being spoken around the bend in the corridor. He can't understand what is being said, he only knows it is close, too close.
Briefly looking over his shoulder, he sees both Sha-Gravis and Tesfaye lagging behind.
"The goblin is too fast, we have to make a stand", he whispers to the others as he moves south to stand by Saffi, keeping eyes on Tesfaye and Sha-Gravis.
He once again concentrates his magic, and readies himself in case Grommit comes into view and range.
Movement: 20ft South and over to the West of the corridor Action: Ready Reaction: Cast Produce Flame and throw it at Grommit if he comes into view and within range - To Hit: 5+5=10.
Hemlock can hear the bars of a cell rattling ahead. A spark appears in his palm - magical potential ready to be fully activated on a moment's notice. He forcibly calms his breathing, turns to look back, and braces for what's coming.
Saoirsestops all of a sudden when she hears the cries for help coming from some of the cells. She looks behind, at Lamand Saffi, showing clear signs of doubt. Should they try to help? But how!? They didn't find any prison keys back at the office. How are they supposed to free anyone in a cell? Lamcould try again with this brute force, but would that kind of feat be achievable once again? Or Saffi could try using a lockpick but ... do they even have time for any of that with Grommitbeing so close? Are they going to risk the safety of six people for one prisoner?
As she is thinking this, she moves one step in the direction of the cell the cries have come from. But thinks twice, shakes her head and stops.
- We can't ...! - she mutters, more for the party members right behind her to hear than for the actual prisoner - I mean, if we had the keys...! But stopping now is a risk for everyone else...!
She has to make a quick decission, and decides against helping the cyring prisoner. And she's about to just keep running to the Yard when Hemlock's warning reaches her: "The goblin is too fast, we have to make a stand".
- Damn! Damn this place! DamnGrommit! Damn the whole HMC! - she says, pursing her lips into a thin line and prioritizing again. No helping the prisoner, at least for now. No running to the Yard either. Trying to outfast the goblinhad been a good idea, but it just hasn't worked as they expected.
So she just turns back and same as Hemlock, she gets ready for burning Grommitthe moment that damned cooks shows his face around the corner...
Movement: go next to Hemlock Action: Hold my own Produce Flame and also throw it at Grommit the moment he appears round the corner. To hit: 21. Damage: 3.
The rattling of bars slows down, and a dejected "Help?!" echoes through the hall.
Saoirse joins Hemlock, standing shoulder to shoulder with her towering comrade. A pulse of energy flows Saoirse's arm, and the fire in her bloodline is ready to be realized and flung out towards the oncoming threat.
Lam stops just short of bowling Saoirse over as he, too, hears the prisoner. He watches the faces of Saoirse and Saffron as he silently hopes they don’t suggest he force open another cell. He is not sure he can do it again. Then Hemlock’s warning rings true:
”The goblin is too fast. We have to make a stand.”Lam takes one last look in the direction of the cries for help before he follows his friends’ initiative.
Grommit had already made his intentions clear: he meant to kill or imprison every last one of them. He had been offered peace and attacked anyway. This won’t be on him, Lam tells himself. He steps between his friends to get in front of them and gets out a javelin, aiming to throw it.
Movement: 30 ft- up the hallway as much as possible. Going through Hemlock and Saoirse will be difficult terrain, right? He should end up between those two and Sha in that hallway. I’ll do my best to put Lam in the right place in Owlbear, but probably not until I get home in a couple hours.
Free action: Get out a javelin.
Action: As soon as Grommit comes in sight and in range (30ft), Lam will throw a javelin at him. Attack: Miss. Damage: Who knows? When I came back this had rerolled to be a max damage crit! But it did not start out that way!
Grommitrushes around the corner, swinging his weight around Tesfaye. He lands just out of reach of Sha-Gravis, and contorts himself to try to dodge the fire and steel immediately flung his way. He manages to twirl out of the way of the javelin, but as he does two small balls of flame crash into him - one into his back and one into his chest. It would take an expert eye to see that it was Hemlock's flame which caught him in the most vulnerable spot on his chest - as everything seemed to happen all at once. The strain becomes clear on Grommit's face, and his skin is blackened and cracked where he was hit. You realize that he must have started this fight already injured from the confrontation that had been happening outside. Still, Grommit's focus has not broken. He attacks Tesfaye violently, first with a punch that they are able to block, but then with a swinging kick that pushes Tesfaye against the wall - a crunching noise comes from where shell collides with stone.
Lam: miss with javelin
Saoirse: Hit for 3 damage with produce flame.
Hemlock: Hit for 7 damage with produce flame. (I rolled from your sheet)
Grommit is bloodied. Grommit misses Tes, then hits Tes for 8 damage.
Tesfaye panics, and tries to run away from the mad goblin. As they flee, Grommit lunges out with a fist, but this is thankfully turned away by their shell. When they get far enough away to breathe, Tesfaye retracts into their shell. You can see that one of the plates making up ther shell is cracked inwards, and Tesfaye's breathing is laboured.
Tes is bloodied. AoO attack misses Tesfaye. Tesfaye goes into their shell.
The other HMC guards continue their march towards you, although they are not running. Perhaps they are tired too?
Sha speaks before running along the wall, passing above Hemlock and Saffi before gracefully leaping down a short set of stairs and swatting a torch from the wall.
Grommitresponds in Common - he actually has a bit of a 'Common' accent when he speaks Goblin - "I can not let an attack on Hammerstone go, or a group of murderers. You... *he grunts in pain* are not leaving this place."
Sha-Gravis can hear mumbling from among the prisoner cells: "I'm not supposed to be here. I didn't do anything to them. I just want to be free..."
Saffi is suddenly, and uncharacteristically, overwhelmed by the previous deathly fight, the chase, Grommit's dogged pace, and the calls of the prisoner(s). Seeing the little goblin round the corner, and hearing his oath to avenge his friends, she makes a choice--a choice she figured she'd have to make. "We are leaving, but you can stay here, in this place you so dearly love, you poor, pathetic brainwashed fool."

Grommit turns towards the incoming arrow, and instead of dodging his hands come up to attempt to deflect the missile. But he is too exhausted, too tired, and his fist is coming from the wrong outstretched position (used his reaction on an AoO against Tesfaye), and this blunder opens him to take Saffi'swell-placed arrow full in the chest. The arrow hits in the center of the burn from Hemlock's magic, and sinks in up to the fletching. Grommitfalls, and as he does he shouts "Avenge Me! Brothers!"
"We did not murder, we just defend ourselves", Hemlock says sadly, the words coming slowly as usual.
With that said, and seeing the now lifeless form of the goblin, he turns towards the sound of the cell door rattling and from where he believes he heard a plea for help echoing down the corridor.
"If there are more innocents, we should help", he says as he runs down the corridor.
If the other prisoner calls out again, he will try and determine if he believes what they are saying.
Movement: 5ft South-West, 25ft West down the corridor Action: Dash - 10ft West, 5ft North-West, then 15ft North. Passive Insight: 15 Special: Concentration Entangle - Round 4/10
As the prisoner hears footfalls approaching, his hope begins to return. "In here! Oh, please, let me out - I swear I never meant to hurt anyone!" Without seeing him, and just hearing the voice, Hemlock thinks he sounds honest, and desperate.
Saoirse watches Grommit fall by Saffron's masterful attack with relief. She also sees Hemlock moving towards the cells, and is about to warn him that going there may prove useless without having something to open the cell, but the firbolg is too quick and she in turn decides to search the goblin's body in case he had any keys of him.
As she passes near Tesfaye, she looks at the now hidden tortle with worry. They've suffered a brutal attack that has even damaged their shell, but sadly there's nothing she can do about it for the moment. At least, getting near the goblin's body means that she'll be exposing herself to the attacks of the incoming group of guards, so they will probably not hit Tesfaye nor Sha-gravis, who is badly hurt too, for a while.
After investigating the former prison cook, all the fire genasi can do is hold her scimitar and prepare for what's coming...
Token moved near Grommit's body (used all my movement).
Lam watches in awe as Saffron's arrow meets its mark perfectly. He looks to his injured Tortle friend, hiding in their shell. He watches Hemlock run off to help the prisoner they heard earlier, then sees Saoirse check Grommit's body for keys. He decides that is a good plan. He goes to pick up his javelin that missed Grommit, and checks the other side of his body for the keys, in an attempt to place himself closer to the approaching enemies than anyone else.
Movement: 25ft north, 5ft northeast, to end up directly north of Grommit. I won't be able to move in Owlbear until later.
Free obj. interaction: Pick up his javelin off the ground. If that is allowed- I think that's where it would have ended up.
Action: Investigation check, which I'll roll in the log. 11-1=10
Lam and Saoirse head up to check Grommitfor keys, although their racing hearts and tunnel vision prevent them from really noticing anything they are looking for. Grommit was somewhere in his middle years, old enough to be a father but not old enough to be a grandfather. He was fit and strong, despite his short stature. By his features, he would probably have been considered attractive among goblins, although not extraordinarily so. Lam knows that these details aren't what he was looking for, but they are the things he thinks as he searches the fallen man. He finds no keys. There are a few more darts (4) in specialized pockets on the inside of Grommit's jacket, a jacket which is functional leather despite being a patchwork thing. It is worn from various adventures, and fixed up countless times by a hand that knew the joy of simple labour, and that honour is not bound to form over function. Saoirse knows she's looking for something other than the details of Grommit's clothing, but these are the things that she notices in the moment. She finds no keys.
Tesfayeemerges from their shell, ang groans out a "Thank you all. Let us leave, please." They limp towards Sha-Gravis, and stop with their multi-tool held ready for more threats. The turtle is not smiling.
Having heard Grommit's dying shout, the remaining HMC guards run up behind him. When they turn the corner, they let all out an audible gasp, then a slow intake of breath. They are muddy, with bits of grass and leaves stuck to them. They look exhausted, and bruised, and dismayed. The one closest to Grommit - a dwarf with a shielf and spear - kneels down and places his fingers on Grommit's throat. The other two hold their weapons (another shield and spear, another shortbow) pointed at you, but there is no righteous fury in their eyes, only grim determination.
It is Sha-Gravis' Turn. Sha; Saffi; Hemlock; Saoirse; Lam; Tesfaye; HMC Guards (3)
The one checking for a pulse that will not come looks back at Sha. "Go, then. Let us tend our dead, those who would have been your friends." The others grunt a resigned agreement.
Saoirse looks at the guards, then at Lam. She gives the bugbear a slight smile. Is that it? Are they done? Can they really go?
Looking back at the dead goblin, she almost doesn't believe they have just defeated him, and that their freedom is so close at hand. Then she remembers once again the prisoner that has called for help and decides to push her luck. She approaches Lam, hoping the towering bugbear will somewhat make the order she's about to give sound stronger. She extends the hand which is not currently holding the scimitar and looking at the guards demands:
- The cells keys. Now. And we'll get out of your faces for good.
Intimidation = 7-1 = 6 (not my day...)
Just in case Lam's presence can give me some advantage, I'll roll again = 15-1 = 14.
As Saffi watches Saoirse threaten the guards for the keys, she pulls an arrow from the quiver--an arrow that perfectly matches the one sticking out of Grommit's corpse. She does not draw the bow, but keeps the arrow visible so that the guards can clearly see it. Raising an eyebrow, the changeling adds, "Yes, the keys. But just for kicks and giggles, who's in the cell down there?"
