So now this party, these companions in convenience, make their wending way eastward towards Nightstone. Shadows are nearly non-existent as the sun hangs directly above you, but a gentle breeze snatches the worst of the heat from you.
In the wildflowers scattered along the path bees seek out their treasure, and butterflies drink their fill. The ten miles to Nightstone are calm, with plenty of time to talk, or not talk. It takes you about 3 hours, or maybe closer to 4, depending on your pace. It's a beautiful day, and there's no rush.
The last part of the path follows alongside the river, and you watch a kingfisher dart from an overhanging tree branch to emerge with a wriggling sliver of silver, which it gulps down gratefully. Finally the keep of Nightstone emerges from hills in front of you, sat atop its own man-made hill in the middle of the river, and you know that just on the other side of it is the town itself. Food, family, friends and fun await. The ringing of a bell seems to harken to your arrival, "Welcome!" it might be saying, "Welcome!"
But as you get closer it is plain to see that something is wrong. Sections of the keep have collapsed, its stone walls tumbled down the slope of the motte into the river. Passing the keep you see that the bridge which connects the keep to the town has also collapsed. The bell continues, and does not stop. The sound is far from welcoming now, feeling more like a warning. "Stay away!" it says, "Stay away!" Aside from the bell, all is eerily silent.
After following the trail for ten miles, you hear the ringing of a bell. The sound grows louder as Nightstone comes into view. A river flows around the settlement, forming a moat. The village itself is contained within a wooden palisade, beyond which you see a windmill, a tall steeple, and the high-pitched rooftops of several other buildings. Apart from the ringing of the bell, you detect no other activity in the village. The trail ends before a lowered drawbridge that spans the moat. Beyond the drawbridge, two stone watchtowers flank an open gap in the palisade.
South of the village and surrounded by the river moat is a cone-shaped, flat-topped hill on which stands a stone keep enclosed by a wooden wall. The keep, which overlooks the village, has partially collapsed. A wooden bridge that once connected the keep to the village has also partially collapsed.
((The picture below the map is annoyingly oriented from the other side of the river than you. Imagine it flipped over, keep on the right, for the view as you approach.))
The only way into the village is over a drawbridge between two stone watchtowers. Xondario and Jenira, you know that normally you would have to wait for the drawbridge to be lowered, but you find it already down and unguarded. It is 20ft long, 10ft wide, and made of sturdy oak planks. Thick iron chains bolted to the drawbridge travel up into the watchtowers through small, square holes. The watchtowers are still, and show no sign of any guards.
The sound of the bell only gets louder as you approach the drawbridge. Jenira and Xondario, you recognise it as the temple bell.
As they walk towards the Nightstone, the sound of that bell, was... different. Xondario had heard the bells before but this seemed to keep going, he never recalled the bells ringing this long before. As they walked along the pathway following the river Xondario gets a sinking feeling, he sees the crumbling keeps walls, and those dam bells keep ringing. If there was trouble, why is nobody fleeing, why is there no foot traffic in or out of town. Xondario starts to run, Not again. Quickly remembering those he was traveling he he yells back to them, "FIND YOUR FAMILY, I WILL MEET YOU WHEN I CAN!" He starts running towards the river until he realises the gate is already down and he run towards it. NOT AGAIN, THIS CAN'T BE HAPPENING AGAIN! at least there was no smoke, thank goodness no smoke. He resisted the urge to scream out for Adelle to hear, he knew chances were she wouldn't hear and he didn't yet know who would be in there to hear. He cared not who they were however, anyone in his way would be no more then a bump in his path. He couldn't be too late again.
Heart pounding and grip tightening, he dashed for the drawbridge.
Xondario was so caught up in his own head that he failed to realize Jenira had started running toward the town before he did. Pure desperation and utter fear etched across her face. 'What? Nononononono, no.' Jenira sprints for the drawbridge and the opening to the town hardly noticing Xondario besides her. She does her best to keep an eye for any signs of movement or life, hoping beyond hope to find any information on what is going on. 'I was almost home. It's been four years. Please be alright. Please.' That once open and joyful expression fixed into into deep worry with only a thread of hope to illuminate it.
I've updated the map to include the key, for sake of ease in directing. Here's the situation:
- Jenira and Xondario are currently at 1. The Drawbridge. In front of them over the drawbridge stand 2a, the West Towers.
- Jenira, you know that your family's house, Dayrun Farm, is at 4c. You probably know most of the other residences too, if you would like to know (4a-h), and I'm sure Xondario knows a few as well.
- Xondario, you know that Adelle has a room in the Nightstone Inn at 8.
- The Temple with the ringing bell is at 5, just past the drawbridge and the towers.
Let's see what Alyssa and Gorm are doing first before moving forward, as they don't know any of this.
Alyssa scratches her head from Jenira’s words to her companion when she includes him in their short conversation. Before she could even ask any follow up questions, Jenira and her tall companion were already walking ahead of them. She could swear her freckles twinkled!
With a blink, Alyssa looks up to Gorm. They were were continuing right? Blue hues blink again. And did she say ‘just Alyssa’? Was this going to be a thing? Was she too ambiguous? Then before she could think too much more on it, the half-elf gives the tiefling a gentle tug on his arm to continue. She could see wildflowers, bees, and butterflies further along the path, and really wanted to get moving along to sightseeing on their way.
The moment Alyssa hears the bell tolls, she perks up. Then when she could finally see the keep in her view, she’d point it out, even though Gorm probably saw it before she did. “They must be really excited to get to Nightstone.” A comments without initial thought as she notices the two ahead of them bursting into a dash. Then their shouts reach her ears… Alyssa squints and corrects her glasses.
Alyssa glances up at Gorm. Again. Is this where they run too?
Gorm is pulled along by Alyssa and the journey continues on. Gorm allows the new additions to carry on much of the conversation and falls back into his more familiar look and listen mode.
The two new road companions seem an odd pairing, but Gorm supposes no more than Alyssa and himself. That is one thing about civilization, there is far more variety than the desert.
He notes the bell right away but these lands also have a lot more noise than the desert and he doesn’t note anything more than its existence at first. When the two latest additions take off at a run, however, it’s apparent that something is amiss.
“Not excited,” Gorm replies distractedly as he grabs Alyssa’s arm. “Something is wrong. Stay close.”
Gorm keeps his hand upon her arm until he is sure she is running with him. It’s unclear where the danger is so best to keep her close until he can figure out how best to keep her safe. He runs after Xondario and Jenira, falling behind a bit to keep Alyssa near and to be more cautious than they are. They’re worried for people, he assumes, but Alyssa is the only one he knows…
As they start to approach the drawbridge Gorm draws one of his blades. The others worry and the lack of seeing anyone responding has him on edge and he wants to be prepared for anything…
Gorm, you notice that the grass and dirt just west of the Drawbridge (by and just past the tree on the map) is churned up, and realise it is many footprints one on top of the other.
If you would like to investigate them further please make a Survival check. If not, let me know and we can move on.
Gorm slows his step and notes the grass but continues on following the others. Best to figure out what is going on before chasing possible blue leads..
Feeling herself get tugged along, Alyssa presses forward to do her best not to hinder Gorm’s speed. She’s by no means weak, or out of shape, simply less muscle bulk and shorter legs. None the less, she understands the urgency and keeps up the best she can with her journal hugged tight to her chest. Should her blue hues catch the same churned up grass, she’d be guilty of trying to analyze it as they grow near and/or pass it.
(If I may DM, otherwise feel free to ignore if Alyssa doesn’t spot it:) (Survival: 17) (Tossing a second roll in case for if it’s considered DA without stopping: 6)
Over the drawbridge you pass between the two watchtowers - each 20ft tall they form a gatehouse of sorts. To your right as you enter the village is a huge rock, at least 3ft wide, embedded in the dirt at the centre of a small crater. To your immediate left is one side of the Temple (5), the steeple standing at the end nearest the drawbridge. This long side is all windows, and Jenira and Xondario know that the entrance is at the other end from here, facing the Inn (8). At the top of the steeple you can see the iron bell swinging back and forth incessantly, its tolling filling the air without cease.
Your vision looks past further large rocks pitting the ground, and in the centre of the town square (3) you see two large creatures, something like wolves but with sloped heads and faces of raw red skin. They are closer to the north side of the square, by the Inn. Their attention is currently taken with a messy lump of blood and flesh which they are both tearing at and fighting over with animalistic growls which nonetheless have a cadence approaching language.
Jenira and Xondario, you also see that the Nightstone, the massive chunk of obsidian in the very centre of the town square from which the town takes its name, is gone. Nothing remains but a 5ft deep hole.

Alyssa notices Gorm looking in that direction and, following his gaze, also sees the footprints. However without stopping to examine them properly it's hard to make head or tail of them.

Afraid he would scare off creatures, Xondario attempts to sneak up to the large rock without alerting the them to his arrival. Finally slowing down a bit he realizes Lady Jenira was running along side him. In a loud whisper he says "check the temple, someone is ringing that bell, watch for a trap." Luckily that bell should help hide their sound.

The sight of the creatures bursts through Jenira's panic and something like rage begins to bubble up within her. 'How dare they! This is my home.' Almost without thought, magic begins to surround Jenira. An invisible pressure is felt by those near to her as the magical manifestation of her fear, worry, and rage builds to a breaking point. At that breaking point an emotional cry of pain and anger pierces the courtyard., "AAAAGHH!!" That cry is accompanied by a burst of white light. White light currently spearing towards one of the creatures, arcing with blinding speed.

"Catapults?" Gorm asks himself as he sees the large stones which caused craters in the dirt. He had not seen such things only heard of them from tales... But what else could have propelled such large rocks so strongly?
Gorm makes some attempt to not drag Alyssa along but he is eager to see what is going on and fearful of leaving her behind. Seeing Grom going to the north side of the rock towards that beast, Xondario steps out to the south from behind the make shift cover. Anger that he was too late getting here to help prevent whatever happened here mixing with the satisfaction that he was finally able to put the maul on the head of a problem makes Xondario let out a loud growl. He steps up to the beast with the hammer raised and tries to see what they are made of.
