On the last stretch to Vallaki, the blonde elven maiden would walk with the Vistani girl, making pleasant conversation about her people and their fascinating culture. She assures the girl she will come with her to her people as soon as the deranged man has been turned over to the Burgomaster of the town. Celeste gives the guards a warm and friendly smile as she passes them and as they get inside she asks Ismark to show the way to the Burgomaster.
"No, that was not what I said..." Celeste responds to Rodan. "...but any Vistani justice for this man might be seen as vengeance by the people of Vallaki and this will not improve relations between them. The man shall clearly face true justice though." ...
Janek sighs ... " ... ...The Vallaki might be upset at Visitani justice. The Visitani may be upset at Vallaki justice. But clearly the goddess of this 'humble' Elf knows best." He clearly does not sound like he agrees with this last assessment.
Once more coming out of his zombie-like trance as he follows along, Alcazar laughs out loud.
"I'm not sure I see evidence in this land of justice, but the only people who have helped us so far are the Vistani."
He looks down at the girl, "If it were up to me I would defer to whatever justice that they choose. Attempting to murder someone for profit seems to warrant a strong response...but perhaps I am a little out of touch these days."
He shrugs and falls silent again, gazing up the road.
The guards briefly try to stop you, but Ismark speaks to them and is known to them, so is able to get the group admitted to the town without any problems. He convinces them to find a colleague of theirs, and you manage to get the drunken fisherman handed over to the local town guard. The guard who takes him away says "Alright, we'll take him for the moment as we know you Ismark. But you lot better talk to the Burgomaster to explain what you think he should be charged with."
The girl, Arabelle, takes her leave from you in the town. Before departing, she says: "Thanks again for saving me! That was a close one. I'm going to head back to the Vistani camp - i'm sure my family are wondering where in the nine hells I am! Come and see us! I need to introduce you to the others! "
Once inside, Ismark tries to give you a brief overview of the town.
"Now, let's see what there is that might be of interest to you? Hm.
Well, this is the town square" he says, indicating the large central area you have wandered into
"There's the local church - which is St Andral's, a small place, but reputed to be protected by the bones of St Andral himself.
There's an Inn here, call the Blue Water - that large two-story building over there. It will no doubt be able to offer food, drink and accommodation until we find something permanent.
That mansion is where the Burgomaster of Vallaki lives.
There are some shops and warehouses here. There's the usual equipment stores, food market, coffin maker, and one shop is even a toy shop!" he says this last one with clear amazement at the rarity of such a thing.
"I heard that there's also a some Carneval caravans somewhere around here. I would guess near the warehouses where there is ample space for such caravans.
And as the girl already told us, just south-west of the town there's another small Vistani camp - probably similar to the one we stayed at last night."
After his explanation of the town, he suggests for Ireena to stay with you while he starts to make inquiries as to getting a house to stay in while they are in Vallaki. Ireena is a striking woman, and draws a lot of admiring looks from the menfolk of the town. The first merchant you hear Ismark talk to offers that he would happily let Ireena stay with him - but alas he only has the one large bed. Ireena sneers at the merchant in disgust, and Ismark swiftly moves on with his inquiries.
[Ireena stays with the group for the time being, Ismark splits from the group for a while - unless someone want to help him find a house to rent]
Janek listens as Ismark explains the landmarks of the town. When he finishes, he says to Celeste, "I presume you will accompany the girl to the Vistani? Someone is going to have to get our criminal over to the Burgomaster I think. I can go wherever I'm needed. In any case, perhaps we all return to gather at the Blue Water Inn?"
As the Vistani girl bids them farewell, Celeste seems a bit worried at first to leave the girl going back by herself, but as she realizes how close the Vistani camp is she nods and smiles to the girl. "I will be happy to visit you soon Arabelle, we'll just make sure this man faces righteous justice for what he did. Have a safe walk home now and I will see you later."She says with a warm smile, leaning down to give the girl a brief gentle embrace before waving her off.
As the Vistani girl leaves, Celeste turns and listens to Ismark's overview of Vallaki and gives him a nod and a polite smile as he leaves. "I will take this man to the Burgomaster's mansion, and I would be grateful for any company, but then going to Blue Water Inn for food, drink and a comfortable bed while asking around for Getruda sounds like a good idea." She suggests to Janek with a warm melodious voice and a friendly smile.
By the lakeshore, Rodan scoffs and walks away when the final decision is made. He makes no illusion that he agrees with it, but he doesn't challenge it further.
Outside the gates of Vallaki, he pauses to admire the wolf heads on sticks.
"It makes ya proper wonder... does a wolf 'ave the brains necessary to process and account for such a warnin'? Would a wolf look at these heads on pikes and think,'Blimey! We must steer clear of such a place'...?" He reaches out and wiggles the lolling tongue of a dead wolf. "Or is a wolf's noggin on a stick just a proper feast for the other wolves? An open invite, more than a scare-off?"
Without hesitation, Rodan moves to follow Celeste to the mayor's mansion. "Alright, then. I s'pose we'll get ta see what justice looks like in this Burg."

You make your way to the Burgomaster's mansion. This mansion is a large building, with walls of plastered stone that display many scars where the plaster has fallen away from age and neglect. Drapes cover every window, including a large, arched opening above the mansion's double entrance doors. The doors are open, with people coming and going - including guards taking other people in shackles in to the Burgomaster. Near the entrance, you see a man who one of the locals points out as being the Burgomaster. His name is Baron Vargas Vallakovich - a small man, made to look even smaller by two enourmous bull mastiffs (dogs) who sit behind him and seem to follow him around. With him is what appear to be his aide, a small malformed man. Both men wear rather forced rigid smiles, and you notice that the guards specifically put on stiff smiles as soon as they are near the Baron or if he is looking towards them.
As you approach with your prisoner, the Baron turns to you and says. "Ah, newcomers to the town. And you bring a prisoner! All will be well, all will be well. Now, what has this man done? Not another case of malicious unhappiness?! Oh my, oh my, we will have to do something about this. We certainly cannot abide such behaviour - not with the Festival of the Blazing Sun just days away now!
But of course, I will take him off your hands. Off to the town square, and the stocks, with him. He can be locked up there while we think what to do with him for his crimes. All will be well!"
The Baron calls over some guards, who take the prisoner off your hands and drag him off to the town square.
"So what brings you to our happy town? Have you heard of the festival? We be celebrating the Festival of the Blazing Sun. Oh, it will be a happy and joyful occasion. Yes yes, it most certainly will be. Do stay at the Inn until then, and feel free to browse the many shops we have. And, it should go without saying, do not cause any trouble in my happy little town.
All will be well!"
You note that every time he says "happy", he puts a little too much force and emphasis into the word, as if willing it to be so would eventually make it true.
The Blue Water Inn has some rooms available, which they are happy to rent to you for a few nights. The Innkeeper also is happy to get some supper ready for you to have once you have had a chance to explore the town.
Celeste is polite with the Baron but is also very thorough in her report on the crime the man has commited and explains she will follow the Vallakian course of justice with great interest. "We're looking for a missing girl, hailing from the village of Barovia."The blonde elven maiden explains in her warm melodious voice with a friendly smile and shows the Baron and his servants the picture of Gertruda.
Already put off by the Baron's odd demeanor, Rodan splits off from Celeste and follows the guards as they take the prisoner away. He follows them and observes how they treat the man and what they mean by taking him to the 'stocks.'

Already put off by the Baron's odd demeanor, Rodan splits off from Celeste and follows the guards as they take the prisoner away. He follows them and observes how they treat the man and what they mean by taking him to the 'stocks.'
The town stocks turn out to be a wooden frame into which the legs of a prisoner go to be locked and fastened. Nearby, the guards have stacked baskets of food waste and rotten fruits which some of the townspeople pick up to throw at the prisoners. Once the guards are out of sight of the Baron and his Aide, they dropped their forced smiles and take on the typical look of mixed boredom and grumpiness that seems the natural state for most guards.

"We're looking for a missing girl, hailing from the village of Barovia."The blonde elven maiden explains in her warm melodious voice with a friendly smile and shows the Baron and his servants the picture of Gertruda.
The Baron examines the picture. "Hmm. No, I do not recognise her. But it is possible that she heard of the festival and came to our town. The Festival of the Blazing Sun will be a most joyous day, with much merriment, I am sure. Perhaps you will find her there? Stay at the Inn for a while, enjoy the hospitality of the town and our shops. Spend some of your hard-earned money or well-deserved luxuries while you wait. I'm sure you will find her eventually. All will be well!"
"Yes yes, all will be well. I'm sure we will stay over the festival then."The blonde elven maiden says with a polite but slightly forced smile, putting away the picture again. She then heads over to the Blue Water Inn, getting a room and a glass of white wine while waiting for supper to be served, showing the picture of Gertruda to Innkeeper while ordering, asking if he or any of his staff would have seen her in Vallaki.
It late afternoon by the time you make your way to the Inn. You enter the Inn, and go into the main taproom.
Damp cloaks hang from pegs in the entrance portico. The tavern is packed with tables and chairs, with narrow paths meandering between them. The Inn is not too busy yet, but is slowly filling up with patrons for the evening. A bar stretches along one wall, under a balcony that can be reached by a wooden staircase that hugs the north wall. Another balcony overhangs an entrance to the east. All the windows are fitted with thick shutters and crossbars. Lanterns hanging above the bar and resting on the tables bathe the room in dull orange light and cast shadows upon the walls, most of which are adorned with wolf heads mounted on wooden plaques.
The Innkeeper, Urwin Martikov, welcomes you into the bar. "Welcome to our humble establishment. I like to think of this as my own little Island of safety is this valley. Please, what may I offer you?"
Having asked for your wine, he responds:
"But of course. You're in luck, we just have a last carafe of white wine left." He leans forward conspiratorially "In fact - and don't tell the drunkards or they may panic - but we're nearly out of all wine! We were due a delivery some time time ago, from the vineyard 'Wizard of the Vines'. I probably should try and check out why the delivery is so late, but I can't leave the Inn unattended.
Say, you wouldn't be willing to do me a favour and check on that delivery? I'm return, I can let you have rooms and food at the friends & family rate."
Quite pleased over the carafe of white wine, Celeste politely listens to the Innkeepers request. "So, this vineyard, is it far?"She asks a bit tentatively, taking a sip of her white wine, glancing over at the others in her company. She didn't feel convinced there would be much enthusiasm over already leaving Vallaki again.
"How soon until this festival?" Janek asks the Baron before they go. He had the odd feeling it may be some time.
As Celeste orders, then discusses checking on a vineyard, he listens to the conversation. "We may as well check, we don't really have anywhere else to go."

"Okay, I'm with you."The blonde elven maiden says with a smile as Janek suggests they should check the vineyard, then looking over at the others to see their opinons.
(So, late afternoon, we need to sleep before going to the vineyard right?)
