Kathra peers closely at the fish(?) things on the ground. "I certainly don't think we had those on the mountain... but then again, we didn't have walrus men on the mountain either."
'What in the world' is right! You're pretty sure you remember reading about creatures like this in some bygone bestiary somewhere. You are fairly certain these creatures are called Storm Seals, and that this paltry palm-sized version is only a small stage in their development. Thinking back, you recall that Storm Seals are mainly thought to dwell in thunderclouds, descending only occasionally to spawn or hunt. It's speculated that Storm Seals birth a large clutch of aquatic minnow-like babies along river ways or in high altitude mountain lakes. As the minnows mature into the larger 'pups' they gain the power to fly. From there, they grow to adolescence and adulthood, each stage accompanied by prodigious expansion, until they reach about twelve feet in length, with the strength to snatch whole elk or reindeer from the ground if they so choose. Their tails spikes are where the bulk of their electrical discharges come from, and some pictures you remember, you think they might have grown horns as they age? Either way, while it's not unheard of for Storm Seals to be sighted this close to civilization, it does seem strange to find these creatures in foothills of mountains like these when there would surely be better places for them to spawn higher up.
Also, Gavin has handed you the strange magical stone.
Strangely enough, your clan elders told stories of creatures like these. Now that you can get a better look at them, you can see the seal-like bodies and gossamer wings you remember hearing about as a child. Your story-tellers called these "Storm Seals" and would speak of how they ushered in the rains and other summer storms. Of course, the ones your elders talked about were much bigger, and known for being playful and capricious....opportunistic hunters that stalked elk herds in packs, steering the beasts with their charged horns and picking out morsels to take away to the clouds.

"The mongoose blew out its candle and was asleep in bed before the room went dark." —Llanowar fable
"Wait, I have heard of these before... but they're supposed to be much bigger." Kathra pauses, thinking. "I think we may have just killed a bunch of babies."
Peren says to Kathra, “You may be right but we had no choice after they attacked Gavin. I wonder why they were staying around the weird object that Gavin handed to Mirabel”
Mirabel taps the stone, shakes it, listens to it, licks it, and then shrugs and tosses it to Kathra. "Absolutely no idea what this is, but it's very shiny."

Kathra catches the stone with a look of surprise on her face. "I'm not sure what you expect me to be able to tell you about this. It's clearly some kind of... magic rock, or something." She peers at it closer, as if that might help.
Arcana: 10
((This is the most appropriate roll for Kathra in this situation, beyond a 1))
((Not that you can understand anything about the stone from an arcane perspective, but Kathra can make an Insight roll now that you're looking at the rock up close.))

"The mongoose blew out its candle and was asleep in bed before the room went dark." —Llanowar fable
The trek is soggy and miserable up and down the foothills of this rainy mountain. For much of the day, you try to at least keep the river in sight, occasionally having to forge your own path through the wet leaves, grasses, and copious muddy game trails nearby. Occasionally, the rain picks up to the point where you have to find shelter under a rock formation or some sturdy branches or become rather waterlogged. All things being equal, this mountain and its moist malaise probably rank nearly below hiking up a dragon infested volcano...because, you know, at least that would be exciting. As the sky begins to darken, signalling the setting of the sun behind the bleak, cloudy gray skyline, you find a clearing about sixty feet from the rivers banks, mostly dry enough from the reaching branches of the surrounding trees, to eek out a rough campsite for the night.

Kathra feels entirely at home in mountain environments, but even she has her limits when it comes to the weather. "I"ll take first watch. Maybe by the time it's over this rain will have let up."
Mirabel gives an audible groan as he feels the healing energy wash over him.
"Ah, splendid." He turns to the weird fish things. "What in the world..."
Arcana: 22

Mub just takes his time after the fight to get what fish he can.
Mirabel peers at the odd Stone to see what he can make of it.
Arcana: 5
It's a strange stone indeed. Likely an Identify spell would unlock its mysteries.
Mirabel taps the stone, shakes it, listens to it, licks it, and then shrugs and tosses it to Kathra. "Absolutely no idea what this is, but it's very shiny."

((Sure, why not. Insight: 5))
Yeah, it's just a strangely warm stone to you.
Kathra shrugs and tosses the rock back to Mirabel.
Should we take a short rest or continue heading north?
I healed myself and Mirabel (and anyone else in range, thought just us two were injured) so I’m good to go w no rest
Seems like we're going north then!

Peren will take the second watch
