Essendrum proposes that Kiza’s bat scout ahead a bit in the dark with its blindsight, with the party order being Flint, Enoch, Essendrum, Bjorn, Kiza. Essendrum can carry a torch for light without interfering with his spells.
Essendrum lights a torch and peers into the gloom. His magearmor and warding sigils shimmer faintly. From his shoulder the raven croaks quietly to nobody in particular and thinks to itself that this could be a good place to watch the wizard expire slowly pinned beneath fallen rock.
The party begins its descent after Bjorn confers a Blessing upon Spike, Enoch, and Kiza. Visibility leaves those that do not have Dark Vision about 18 ft. down the shaft and your eyes take a bit longer to adjust to the darkness. Your spirits are high as you descend, with the prospects of a new adventure and reward at the end, giving you a slight smile. It's about 30 minutes into the climb and you realize this may be a longer descent than you anticipated. Just then Kiza slips, lost in thoughts of "Just how far does this damn ladder go down" but she quickly "Rights" herself to the relief of the rest of the party. Enoch calls up that the rungs get a bit slippery the further you go down as he too has to adjust his grip. It's a whole 15 minutes later before you hear Enoch's armored boots touch a floor. He moves aside and allows the rest of the party to gather at the base of the ladder. Essendrum lights a torch and reveals to the party where they have found themselves.
The party finds themselves standing in a 20 ft. x 20 ft. room with a 12 ft. ceiling. (the ladder is on the north wall). The walls are clean and clearly made of smooth unmarked granite. Taking up a large portion of this room is a small stone dias. Resting on top of the dias is a 4 ft. high x 2 ft. wide x 7 ft. long stone sarcophagus made of white marble. The top of the Sarcophagus is carved into a humanoid figure dressed in a long robe. It appears to be human but on closer inspection, you find small intricate carvings on its "exposed" stone skin.
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Kiza looks back to a cautionary tale she heard as a kid and makes sure not to touch the sarcophagus. She does scrutinize the intricate carvings. She tries to recall if she has seen these before or know anything about them.
Enoch: Your Divine Sense does not pick up anything at this time.
Bjorn, Essendrum, & Kiza: All three of you inspect the sarcophagus without touching it. The language is something each of cannot identify at this time. It consists of rows of various symbols, a bird, a crescent moon, a hand, a scythe among them, combined with various pyramid-like hash marks. (pictograms with some cruciform elements per se)
Kiza has not seen the like in her readings.
Essendrum looks around but finds no exits in this room nor anything that might be considered interesting.
"Yes, that makes sense Essendrum as I doubt a catacomb would be so small." says Kiza. She will wait to see if Essendrum senses any magic on the sarcophagus.
Essendrum Essendrum casts his spell and symbols on each hand (both of a skull), one on the forehead (an eye), and one on the belt (a skeletal hand) glow with Transmutation magic.

Amazed at his apparent success, Essendrum removes his harness and attaches it to the rope so Bjorn can pull it up and use it himself.
Bjorn grimaces as he dons the harness and makes the attempt

Are the carvings on the statuary in Celestial, Draconic, Elvish, Primordial or Undercommon? Or are they more like hieroglyphs or pictograms?

Yes. The time spent would be a short rest.
Essendrum holds the torch by the sarcophagus to examine it. Then he searches the room for exits or other items of interest.
