Guardok will spend the next day as usual, partaking in his morning routine of exercise followed by a hearty breakfast before class.
Once the lessons are out of the way, he will once again bring up scouting out the manor with Mal and Mae, and any other interested parties.
"I would still like to see the manor for myself, Mal. It's one thing having a map, and hearing about what to expect, but if we can see the place, we can plan where to hide from the statues, swords and automaton butler", he suggests. If they haven't had chance to fill Mae in on what they learned, he will make sure she is fully apprised as well.
Even if Mal decides to do more research, he will go and take a look a least from the outside before his extra curricular activities start.
Malvyn too would go through his normal routines with diligent studying.
"You are right my friend, sometimes all you need can not be found in a book." Malvyn admits with a friendly smile. "I will come with you. Not sure if we should come up with a reason for visiting should anyone ask or if we just say that we are looking around. The manor is still a bit of Strixhaven history so perhaps we can simply say we are researching Captain Dapplewing?"He suggests but is otherwise ready to follow along to the manor.
In the early afternoon, after classes, Guardok and Malvynhead for the Dapplewing Manor. The entrance to the manor is on the opposite of the avenue nearest to Dresar Hall, but almost to the very edge of the central campus. Following a long, leafy path, you approach the front of the manor. At the front is a porch, covered with a mahogany roof and bounded by a low rail. Fine wicker furniture sits along the rail, though at the moment all the chairs are empty save the one on the left, farthest from the door. That one holds an older looking dragonborn, smoking a long-stemmed pipe as he reads from a small book. Above the double door hangs a sign done in fine calligraphy: “Captain Dapplewing’s Manor.”
The dragonborn doesn't seem to pay any attention to you, and nobody else seems to be coming in or out at the moment. Approaching the doors, you see a long planter full of brightly colored flowers. At either end of each plater are large potted plants. If you try the doors, they are open.
Malvyn tries to determine if he and Guardok could look for supposedly hidden key now, to make sure it is there, without raising suspicion from the old dragonborn.
Guardok stares up at the manor as they approach, before lowering his eyes to take in the porch and the older Dragonborn.
"Did you say the key was hidden on the veranda? Is this a veranda or a porch?", he asks Mal quietly, not really knowing whether they should be looking here or out the back somewhere for the key.
The dragonborn does not seem to be looking at you at all, but he certainly might notice you scavenging through the potted plants. And though nobody has come in or out thus far, if someone did it would be obvious as well. The impression you got was the key was hidden at the front of the manor, where it would be convenient to grab the key to go in normally.
While you linger a moment, one student swings open one of the front doors and emerges from the manor. The human does not even give you a glance as she walks past you on her way back to the main part of the campus.
"The words are almost synonyms I believe, veranda suggesting something a bit grander perhaps. I do think the key will be around here though, but I'm not sure we should look for it now while someone might notice."He says quietly to his shorter friend. "Let's do that circuit."He adds with a nod, feeling a bit nervous even though they were doing nothing wrong, so far.
Having never lived in a proper building, Guardok simply accepts Mal's explanation.
He nods and begins to walk around the manor, remaining casual as if it is quite normal for them to be going for a walk here.
"If this is some kind of extension to the university, we should be ok to just walk in, right? We could come up with a cover just in case, I suppose. We could say we are looking for one of our professors. Who do you think would be most plausible? Or we could be after something tucked away in a store room. But again, what?".
The grounds surrounding the manor consist of broad, manicured lawns. You are able to walk off the veranda and head around towards the back, going in a counterclockwise direction. You come to a small deck first. There is a similar small deck on the opposite side and a larger deck in the middle. The small decks have a table and four chairs. The deck in the middle has a row of four chairs set up to look out over the grounds. All the decks have a glass door that leads into the manor. Nobody seems to be around in the back of the place.
"I think I will go with making a bit of general research into the history of Captain Dapplewing, which can be true, it is a bit of a fascinating story, and visiting the manor would only be natural in such research I would think. And you could be a friend coming along, which also is kind of true." Malvyn says, seeming fairly confident in his words as the two walks around the manor. "Shall we continue inside?" He asks, looking around with sincere curiosity. "Let's keep our eyes open for the butler, the book and that doll collection."
The two of you complete the circle around the manor, coming back around to the front. As you approach, you see a couple of students head inside well ahead of you. Malvynleads the way, opening the door so he and Guardokcan step inside. Once inside, you see the two students going up a stairway to your right. You pause there a moment to take in the place. Where you stand is slightly raised, with a set of steps leading into the grand hall below. Straight ahead is what looks like the dining area. At its center is a large ornate table with nothing on it. To the left is an upright piano and to the right a fireplace, though there is no fire at the moment. To either side of the dining area are lounge areas, and there is another stairway to your left.
You also notice to both the left and right there is a hallway past the lounges that looks to wrap around behind the dining area.
Guardok notices as they enter that there is a line of coat racks along the wall to either side of the door. The coat racks closest to the doors depict two dwarves wearing high-collared jackets. The other coat racks on the left depict a one-tusked loxodon, a monocle-wearing orc, and a gnome with a skunk for a hairpiece. The statues on the right depict a drow wearing a scarf, a burly human in a tuxedo, and a high elf in a cowl. Focused on the other details of the manor, Malvyndoes not notice them. He does note a person standing almost statue like off to the left side of the dining area. He wears a silver waistcoat, a black jacket with tails, and a cravat.
The genasi also notices that the two dwarf 'coat racks' are moving! As the two of you linger near the doorway, one begins to speak in a slightly robotic sounding voice. "Welcome to the Dapplewing Manor students. Could I help direct you?"
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
The purple-skinned tiefling is quite intrigued by the magically animated coat racks and gives them both a polite bow. "Thank you, I am here do do some research on Captain Dapplewing. I was hoping to take a tour around the manor, well the parts that are open to the students that is, I hope that would be okay?" He says with a polite smile.

He relaxes a bit when they ask if they can help, but remains a little cautious.
