Never got around to play in a self-contained urban setting and it always intrigued me. There are also so many character concepts that come to mind...
A thief who messed with the wrong merchant and now has to choose between getting put underground or work in the underground business of said merchant.
A cleric apprentice who misplaced an important relic of his church and tries to reaquire it before they find out.
A warlock, the first involuntary follower of an entity that tries to gain a foothold in the city. They enjoy their new found power and must form a cult or loose those powers.
Okay, instead of a normal application of characters, here's what I want to see from an application of players. So if you are interested, please fill this out to the best of your ability!
Write a paragraph or two about yourself and your experience with D&D. What do you like about playing? Do you have experience with PbP? (You will not be judged by a lack of experience. I will also not be judging how long your paragraphs are, I am trying to get a feel for your personality via your writing style. Include details about if you like the crunch of D&D, the roleplaying, or any other aspects.)
What do you know about Baldur's Gate? What sources inform your understanding? (Such as: Descent into Avernus, Baldur's Gate I, II, and/or III, other sources like homebrew adventures, maybe a book, etc. You will not be judged if you don't know anything or if you only know it via the games or anything like that.)
What kind of adventure would you like to see unfold in the city? Though I don't use alignment as a hard and fast rule, what alignment would you like to generally see the party fall under? Ex: Lawful evil, chaotic good, true neutral, etc.
I will probably take a couple of days to read apps and get back to the people who I think might be a good fit altogether, then we can discuss the premise at the very least as well as other session 0-y stuff. It will be a play by post, if that wasn't clear!
Basically, I am hoping to pull together a group that will vibe together. If you have a player in the thread you know and get along with already, feel free to include that info in your application.

I started playing 35 years ago with the Basic set then moved to 1e, 2e and 3e, then due to life issues I stopped. I re-started 4 years ago and due to my timezone (Japan) I found that PbP is the perfect way for me to play. The most important thing for me in a game is to have fun with my fellow players and DM while enjoying a great story together. I like a good mix of roleplay and combat.
What do you know about Baldur's Gate? What sources inform your understanding? (Such as: Descent into Avernus, Baldur's Gate I, II, and/or III, other sources like homebrew adventures, maybe a book, etc. You will not be judged if you don't know anything or if you only know it via the games or anything like that.) I mainly know about Baldur's Gate from the games (Baldur's Gate I, II, and III) and Descent into Avernus (I'm currently running this adventure for a group of friends on Discord)
What kind of adventure would you like to see unfold in the city? Though I don't use alignment as a hard and fast rule, what alignment would you like to generally see the party fall under? Ex: Lawful evil, chaotic good, true neutral, etc. As the Forgotten Realms is a place full of secret societies (Harpers, Zhentarim, Knights of the Shield, etc) that more than often oppose each other in many ways, an adventure that place the group in the middle of such mayhem/chaos could be very interesting and entertaining. As for the alignment, I would choose Chaotic Good.
I've been playing D&D for over 10 years and have experience as both a player and GM. I've been doing PbP adventures on and off for the last 6-7 years, both on the forums here at DnD Beyond and in Discord servers. I enjoy creating and role-playing characters with goals to achieve, backstory loose threads to tie up, and strong ties to their settings, giving them a vested interest in the outcome of their adventures. I like seeing how the events of a campaign challenge and change their participants from a band of scrappy adventurers to a group of trusted companions that will take on the world together. I also enjoy working with a team, making sure every character has a chance to shine. As such I usually make my characters based on what I think the group needs once others have made their characters. I'm happy to play anything, especially if the group is in need of a healer or tank or whatever. I'm definitely more of a storyteller first than rules first type of person when I GM - if I think something will make for an interesting story, but doesn't quite match the rules of the game, I'll probably let it happen anyways.
I know Baldur's Gate from running the early 5e Adventure 'Murder at Baldur's Gate' (RIP Abdel Adrian) and from the Baldur's Gate games, particularly BG3. I haven't beaten it yet but I am currently in Act 3 and having a blast exploring Baldur's Gate.
I like stories that typically follow people who do good things to help heal a dark world or situation. Baldur's Gate is rife with corruption, crime, classism, and the not insignificant chance of the Dead Three's servants making life hells for everyone else. I think it's a great opportunity for some adventurers to expose the ugliness beneath the city's gilded face, fight it at its source, and bring about a better option. I also enjoy it when the 'good' option is difficult to achieve and/or unclear as to whether its the right thing to do. Not that I think we should be goody-two-shoes as a group, either. I enjoy complicated heroes, like the companions in Baldur's Gate 3. Characters like Wyll, who tries to do the right thing but is misled by his cambion patron, Shadowheart, who is so devoted to Shar that she erased her memories but still struggles with her faith, and the other companions are super interesting to me and I'd love to make a character of a similar vein to them. They have strong ties to Baldur's Gate and the story unfolding, and I'd like the same to be true for my character in this adventure, should I be chosen. I don't really use the alignment system either, but I'd say chaotic good is the alignment I'd lean towards. Recklessly doing the right thing, even if it means endangering ourselves.

I started playing DND back in 3e and have progressed through all the iterations leading up to now. The last few years I have not played at all because of a focus on work. I am about a year now into a new job, so I'm far enough in to settle down and am at a place where I feel I could start playing again. The fact that I have family and real work responsibilities I find that pbp is my only real option these days and have played on and off at RPG Crossings in years past. I've never played here before, so I might make a few mistakes on rolling or proper posting techniques. I love the details and statistical side of creating a character, but really what I love is coming up with their backstory and trying to create an identity, then put that into practice and creating a relationship with other players.
I've played BG2 and currently am very intently playing BG3. Even with this, I don't really know the history and such of Baldur's Gate like some do. Most of the actual DND games I've ever played in are set in homebrewed worlds and so my true understanding of BG is limited.
As for types of adventures I'd like to see unfold, I would say if one can be made to mimic how BG3 is doing things would be great. As in, there is a different type of mission or feel of mission that could fit anyone. Some missions require stealth and subterfuge while others are having you use charm and swagger to get what is needed. There is no ideal adventure that I would be looking for, I'm open to anything. Personally my characters are almost all TN or with a leaning towards good. I have done the occasional evil campaign before, but those are challenging and open to quickly fall apart.

I was a 2e and briefly 3e player way back in the long-long-ago. After a long hiatus I got back into D&D last January, playing 5e exclusively as PbP, here and on discord. I really prefer role-play heavy games that allow a lot of room for character interaction and development. I particularly like games that have a focused goal and direction but still allow enough latitude for players to explore their character's own interests and goals (either as side quests or by incorporating backstories into the main quest line). As for "crunch", I would definitely rather play a character that feels more like a person than a math problem.
I have only the thinnest knowledge of Baldur's Gate as a setting and most of that comes from scanning the Forgotten Realms wiki or things that I learned tangentially from another character's backstory in a previous campaign. I can't even vouch for how much of that was canonical and how much of that was homebrew. My general sense is that Baldur's Gate is a grim, gritty, dark city with a lot of corruption and more than it's fair share of class disparity.
As a general guidelines, I like to play Neutral Good characters. I prefer campaigns where the protagonist are heroes trying to right wrongs and/or defend the weak/innocent from bad actors. In a Baldur's Gate setting I would love to see the characters trying to make the city a better place by doing things like facing off against criminal organizations, corrupt officials, and whatever sewer dwelling monsters that go bump in the night. Maybe they're just trying to save one neighborhood. Maybe they never succeed, but continuing the struggle against impossible odds can be its own reward.
Hi I'm Space. I've been playing DnD for about 5ish years now I think? I started on 5e. My first campaign was an in-person Out of the Abyss, which stretched on for a long time and was incredibly fun! I had to make three characters for that wretched adventure because I kept dying. :) Generally speaking I like character creation the most I think? My character tab on here is filled characters already, and I kind of just pull them out and edit them a bit when I apply to a game. I'm already in a few games (in person and PbP) where I'm playing "mechanically optimal" characters I guess? Now I just want to try out combinations that look fun and interesting, like a monk\cleric multiclass or something. Combat is fun, but I think I enjoy exploration\investigation more, particularly when it involves skill checks.
I know very little about Baldur's Gate. Pretty much just stuff I've gleaned from reading the wiki page a few times. Although there's a gazetteer here on DnDBeyond I've been meaning to read through.
A horror themed adventure would be neat to play in, but I understand that isn't everyone's cup of tea. Just about the only campaign I'd pass up on is like a "heist" theme. I'd generally like to see a good-aligned party.
Write a paragraph or two about yourself and your experience with D&D. What do you like about playing? Do you have experience with PbP?
Hello, I have been active on this site for a number of years and am looking to get back into playing. I have DM'd and played a number of PBP games on this site in the past, and recently started DMing a game for my kids at home. I am normally most active during the work week, finding time while in front of my computer at work to post most often. I also post in the evenings and weekends but it can be less frequent due to life with my wife and kiddos.
What do you know about Baldur's Gate? What sources inform your understanding?
So a lot of my experience with Baldur's Gate comes from participating with a Decent into Avernus campaign and watching different D&D campaigns on youtube (Aquisitions INC as an example)
What kind of adventure would you like to see unfold in the city? Though I don't use alignment as a hard and fast rule, what alignment would you like to generally see the party fall under?
Most characters I play are either neutral or good. I have played evil campaigns in the past but it is often hard to keep the players in line and working together towards a goal. I would like to generally see the party fall under good / neutral alignments. As for what kind of adventures, I have a few ideas below: 1) start up mercenary / bounty hunter group looking to make a name for themselves in the city and slowly collect resources to improve / expand... eventually hired for a "big job?" 2) horror theme could be interesting, maybe someone is looking to hire some monster hunters to take care of a sinister creature lurking in the shadows of Buldur's Gate. 3) A bunch of "lower class" sewer dwellers looking for a way to improve their lives and the lives of their underground family
I am pretty much open to most types of adventure though.
Final bump before I make up my mind tonight or tomorrow. I'll msg this thread again when I have picked.

I've been roleplaying for like 10 years in a wide varieity of RPGs: Changeling the Dreaming, Legend of the Five Rings, Call of Cthullu, Dune, etc.. In PbP I've been since 2018 or so, first in Spanish (my native tongue) but lately in English too. It was difficult at first for me to narrate in English, but now it comes pretty naturally! I tend to write long posts, which include what the character thinks or feels, but I guess that depends on the campaign and if the DM and other players do the same (I still haven't been in a campaing where the rest of people doesn't do the same, though!)

I've played Baldur's I and II, more than twenty years ago, and now I'm fully invested in Baldur's 3. But even so, I don't really know Faerûn that much, so I'll probably be very newbie here!
What kind of adventure would you like to see unfold in the city? Though I don't use alignment as a hard and fast rule, what alignment would you like to generally see the party fall under? Ex: Lawful evil, chaotic good, true neutral, etc.
I would enjoy almost any adventure, but I like darker ones (involving murder, horror, etc.). I think I would like a good party, but probably more tending to chaotic than lawful. In any case, if I'm selected I'll adapt to whatever comes.
I made my picks. I was tempted to start a second group, but I shouldn't!! That being said, if someday I want to run something, a different BG game, I might PM some of you who weren't picked!

I tend to write long posts, which include what the character thinks or feels, but I guess that depends on the campaign and if the DM and other players do the same (I still haven't been in a campaing where the rest of people doesn't do the same, though!)
