Kragen frowns at Starker. “Mage Starker, we know not what is within that iron flask, unless you can provide further information.”, “Our last foray into exploring arcane items of suspect ended with the party under ill effects.”, “I find it prudent for us to identify its contents and uses prior to exposing The Company to any unintended affects.”
turns to Chadwick
”Well done Sir Chadwick! You have restored the pact your forebearers had broken and restored this pristine land for the fey and your people.” , “Now is the time to truly celebrate with your kin and the fine people of Monstordrink!” Slaps him on the shoulder.
The stone seems like a great solution. We know your grandfather did not intend to violate the old pact. But you have learned from that situation to ensure the safety of future generations of your people.
Perhaps further considerations for the future of the ‘drukards should lead to conversations with the brewer and the mayor. My personal belief is that both would benefit with strong vows of their own. But that can wait until after the celebrations.
Starker to Kragen:”Colleague, the iron flask is one instantiation of a well known type of artifact which holds a creature that will be grateful to us for freeing it and is guaranteed to help us for roughly 3500 heartbeats. We can then try to recapture it, but I expect that would not comport with your chosen life-esthetic. We will not know what type of creature is within until the decanting, so I suggest we wait until we are in a fight when an ally, any ally, would be particularlry welcome.
”As to your alluding to our interaction with the ring, I was able to remedy that before we suffered any permanent ill effect. And we gained the use of a magic item that will protect me when I next fight angels and archangels! What is life without learning and how can we learn without taking risks!”
It’s good to see The Company in a moment of happiness. Starker getting into the practice of winding up the others up. That is real comradeship. We need times like this…
…hmmm…. Surely he was just winding him up. Oh of course he was just teasing…Probably
“Chadwick has stepped into the center of a tale that stretches far beyond his line and longer than most mortals reckon. But he did so eyes open, heart steady, and soul willing. Not every hero needs to slay a dragon—sometimes, binding your honor to a forgotten promise is the greatest act of all. May his stone stand tall, and his oath echo in the waters for ages.”
"The lady has blessed me far greater than I would have thought given all that happened."
He flexes and stretches, then looks into the woods with his eyes closed.
"She has bestowed upon me even greater healing power than I had before allowing me to remove stains on the soul I couldn't do before."
/OOC His new ability is actually an item (Caellia's gift). Wanted to share incase someone needs to run Chadwick at some point.
Caellia of the Waters has bestowed a gift upon Chadwick, Oath Restorer. Once per day, Chadwick can cause pure water to flow from his hands. Touching an object, person or spot of ground then affects what is touched to remove one curse, poison or disease as a Lesser Restoration spell.
"Friends I think now we have earned some celebration and beers, plus it isn't even nightfall so I won't have to suffer the wrath of Ma Jenkins (he laughs loudly at that. The first round is on me!"
Unless any other party members have reason to stick around the party will hike back to town.
"Xymox, I feel like a bit of explanation (pauses) I guess a speech, will be in order to let folks know what happened. You are better with words so perhaps we can work together to come up with something? Hopefully it'll go better than the last meeting with the mayor (he chuckles at this).
The memorial will also need some to say something. Probably needs to say something other than 'don't be a dick huh'?
The walk back to Monstordrink seems to go by in a flash. The Docile Donkey is abuzz with activity. When you walk in you distinctly hear, "I FOUND THEM!" Moving through the crowd is the assistant to the mayor you met at his offices in The Tower. He walks up and skips the pleasantries, "Glad you could make it to your parade! That starts in 15 minutes! Is that what you are wearing?," he looks at each of you in a single glance. "No time. That's what you are wearing. We need to head to the smithy, now. You will all be on wagon. You are okay with big horses, right? Yes. Of course you are. Okay, let's head that way now....," he seems to shoo you all through the crowd and out the back door.
The walk to the smithy is brief. It is not a long distance taken at a brisk pace. You see a collection of people there who are to take part. Several musicians, a group of young ladies with flowers in their hair and baskets of flowers in their hands, tumblers, several guardsmen in shined up armor on horses and several more on foot to lead the way, a cart with a large chair "that is the Mayor's" pulled by horse, more musicians and tumblers and finally a large cask wagon pulled by four large draft horses. You are hurried to the back of this wagon and loaded on board. A young man is handling the team, "It's an honor Mr Chadwick, and the rest of you." He seems to be taking his job very seriously.
The streets of Monstordrink are lined with onlookers. All cheer as you pass. Cyrus capers about on the wagon to the delight of the children along the way. It is a joyous ride around town to end up at the main square. The onlookers follow you as you pass them so that the entire town square is filled with people. A small dais has been erected in front of The Tower. Mayor Brassbeard steps up. He gives a heartfelt speech about the people of Monstordrink and good overcoming evil. The crowd cheers a bit for him and he invites you all up onto the dais. You are each presented with an embroidered sash "Hero of Monstordrink" by a young lass. They all seem to be jockeying for position to present Chadwick's until finally one succeeds and leads off with his. A chant begins and gains energy CHAD-WICK!, CHAD-WICK!, CHAD-WICK! To the side of the stage you can see Hap and Ma Jenkins. She is dabbing tears from her eye as she beams with joy. Hap looks on, a proud father. The chants begin to slow and someone calls out, "Tell us! Tell us the tale!"
When The Company returns Chadwick will seek out his family and give them the full story of what happened and how they got to where they are now.
He'll then gather Kragen and they will find the mayor in the festivities and let him know the town will need to purify the area around/in the brewery. He will offer to assist in the cost and labor of the clean up. He schedule a time in the near future where they can all set down and go over the details. We can RP this if you want to go into more detail.
Then he enjoys the celebration and the attention of being the hometown hero.
At some point when things settle down Chadwick will see to getting his armor repaired, hiring a craftsman (preferably dwarven) to erect the memorial and reminder near the well. He'll defer to Kragen and Hoid on who should be hired.
Chadwick is able to find his family following the parade and ceremony. His parents are headed back to the farm tonight and will see you in the upcoming days.
Mayor Brassbeard waves off your concerns, “Yes, yes. The priests are already at work with Yanthin cleansing the brewery and the basement. Weird that no one knew about the cellars there. All is in hand there.” His side asks for you to come to the mayor’s office tomorrow at high Sun.
The night is filled with revelry. All of you are thanked and the center of attention well into the night. Eventually, the time comes for rest and you retire to the Docile Donkey.
During the hike back Chadwick confers with Xymox about helping him with a speech at the festival. "I need to drill home to the town folks the importance of living in harmony with the Fey. I fear that without laying it on thick they'll go back to the old ways. Perhaps with a little Bardic inspiration we can get through to them? Because I sure as <giant swearing> don't want to every have to slog through that kind of mess again."
On the dias.
Chadwick is smiling and waving with shout outs to kin and friends. He has a bigger grin for the broad shoulder lass who muscled her way in past the others with his sash. When the chants for a tale spring up he steps up and clears his throat and waits a bit for the crowd to calm. He begins
"This tale is a bit long, so grab yourselves a drink." (More cheers).
He takes a deep breath "First I need to apologize to all of you for my family's party in this."
Xymox cringes inwardly, he told him not to include this part and if he MUST don't bloody well lead with it. Surest way to lost a crowd.
Chadwick goes on to explain his family's involvement and the lost oath over the generations. Xymox adds some sympathic strings of woe in the background while Chadwick earnestly plows on.
He brings them into the present telling of damned and polluted stream befouling the glade. Of selfishness and forgetting the harmony they had once lived with the land and all of its inhabitants.
Xymox starts wondering if Chadwick will retire to become a priest, he certainly seemed to have the guilt part down. The crowd was starting to get antsy , they came for heros and stories of daring do, not lectures.
He goes on to tell how this pollution and neglect is what allowed the evil to start to fester. Finally getting to the part the crowd really wanted he begins to recount the perilous battles, the poisons, acid showers, exploding golems, and powerful undead that nearly defeated The Company. He has regained the interest of the crowd again as he recounts the rescue and healing of the town folks. The story is raw, and brutal. They have heard stories from the bards of heroes vanquishing evil, but never like this. He tells of the final battle, thoughts of last stands and heroic sacrifice to save the remaining party the crowd has mostly gone silent, and hanging on to each word. The redoubled efforts, Tyr's spirits swarming the enemy and giving them strength they emerge victorious.
The lecturing is forgotten and the crowd is cheering and relieved feeling as they were part of it (Xymox's playing certainly made it feel much more animated).
As Chadwick begins the forth and final part he finds his dearven goblet refilled with chilled ale from the same lass as before. Xymox notices she has light green streaks in her hair. He ponders how close these folks were with the Fey in the past.
Chadwick tells of the meeting with Caellia and the Fey. He speaks of their wonder, grace, and willingness to forgive. He tells of vows renewed and promises made.
"This is not just my promise to them, as I can't always be around. This will require care and vigilance on all our parts. Remembering our roots and pledges to live in harmony with all who we share this land with.
Persuasion check: 24
I used Xymox assisting (advantage) but rolled a 3,5 so used heroic inspiration for a reroll, and bardic inspiration for +3.
And to ensure this pledge is not forgotten the mayor has agreed to the erecting of a mural of remembrance and commitment by the town well."
Chadwick smiles sweetly at the mayor and chuckles to himself while he puts him on the spot.
"Now who's got some ale?! This farm boy is thirsty!"
Chadwick jumps off the dias relieved to no longer be the center of attention and finally allows himself to enjoy the festivities.
Starker finds the owner of the brewery:”I expect you’ve noticed that your water supply has been diminished by the amount coming from the direct pipe from the glade? I strongly advise that you accept the situation and do not try to re-start the flow. It was your predecessor’s avarice that started the chain of events which led to the existence of the fell brewmaster and his minions in your basement and the cursing of the town and your brew. Sir Chadwick has made a solemn oath that the natural balance be maintained. I would be very upset if our adventures were to be interrupted again by a call from Montordrink requiring our aid again in this matter.
”I will be on the lookout for your predecessor in my travels. I will let you know if I come across him and in which hospital or cemetary you can find him afterwards.”
Kragen accompanies Starker in finding Brewmaster Yanthin. Nodding thoughtfully as Starker admonishes the Brewmaster and looks sternly at him, pointing several times at certain points during the one-way conversation, then crosses his arms in summary.
Adds "With Mage Starkers help, we will ensure that the lower level is cleared of all necrotic and rotted ingredients. I suggest you discuss with the Mayor sealing the area off or utilizing it for future production."
During their walk back to the Docile Donkey, Kragen addresses the Iron Flask.
"I will have an Iron Flask made for you since you are enamored with the one we found. You can put in it what you like, heartbeats or other such trickery, i care not. The current one will remain in Chadwick's possession until we determine it's true purpose and can decide it's best use." frowns at Starker wondering how many heartbeats he is away from insanity, or maybe that last Mango put him over the edge?
As the Mayor attempts to wave Chadwick off, Kragen sternly addresses the Major. "Mayor Brassbeard, you seem aloof to the fact that citizens, under your watch, have been tortured, killed and turned to the shadow. This is of grave concern to me and my colleauges, some of whom have loved ones that live and have been affected by this blight. I will accompany your priests and with Tyr's help, see to it that this evil has been removed. Your accounting, i leave to Chadwick and the fine residents of Monstordrink." turns and heads with Chadwick to the festivities.
Brassbeard holds Kragen's attention before he can storm off. Quietly he says, "LOOK HERE, guest. You are not going to show up on the breeze and sweep through this town sowing chaos and dissension. *I* am the mayor of this town and will be when you leave. Hap knows this and we have an excellent working relationship. WE WILL MEET TOMORROW IN MY OFFICE. Leave your lectures at the door." He then smiles broadly to all around and raises his mug, "To the Saviors of the Brew!"
Starker to Kragen:”I will defer to you in this matter. However , perhaps what we look for in the one to whom we entrust the Iron Flask is neither intelligence nor strength but wisdom. Perhaps you should be to one to hold it and decide when to decant our short term ally.”
The next morning comes. Those with damaged armor seek out the blacksmith about repairs. All but the mitral armor can be repaired here if you would like. It will take a long time to get it all done though. Chadwick, Kragen and Trolkarl's armor were all damaged in the fight. Hoid's mitral plate will require a more experienced armorer and a more extensive forge to repair. The blacksmith suggests a trip to Waterdeep. He is certain you will find an armorer there who can handle the repairs. If you are going to go there, having the rest repaired there will be faster as well.
Your meeting with the mayor is set at high sun. Hap, two other farmer/ranchers, Yanthin, three Select Men (one is a woman) and the Mayor all come together for meetings of importance concerning Monstordrink. You are invited to this meeting along with Sister Mera who is the lead priestess of Tyr here in Monstordrink. She is somewhat disappointed that Chadwick did not seek her out for guidance when he arrived and discovered problems, and, quietly lets him know as all are moving into the room to take their seats.
Mayor Brassbeard begins the meeting, "Welcome all. A great evil has been overcome by our Saviors of the Brew! Many thanks to you for your great service to our town and its reputation." Nods and murmurs of thanks are sent your way. "I hope that we can now have a direct and civil," the last word emphasized as he looks at Kragen, "discussion about next steps and preventing anything like this from happening again. Perhaps Chadwick and the other heroes who have something important to add can start?"
Starker stands up, clears his throat, and is about to declaim when he notices the horrified expressions on the faces of The Company. He pauses, looks pensive, and sits back down.
