Chadwick looks over the text nodding and saying insightful things like "hmm" fooling nobody that he has no idea what's going on.
After his failed ruse of convincing anyone he's smarter than a turnip..."This may take some time to figure out, perhaps our friend Iolo could be of assistance again?" Unknowingly he seems to grow wistful up on uttering Iolo's name.
Shaking his head he brings himself back into the moment. "Perhaps we should continue exploring the unknown bits of the tower and we can revisit the book later?" Pointing towards the hall off the laboratory, " how about we start down there here?" He says the last part over his shoulder as he puts on his helm and hoists his axe heading towards the the hall.
Kragen, we may need you somewhere near the front on alert. We have seen zombies in the battle with the spider. I wouldn't be surprised if we encountered more restless dead in this place.
Kragen follows Trolkarl and Gneuman… “have no fear Trolkarl, if the pretty Paladin wets himself upon seeing the undead, I will be sure his hair remains untouched!” Chuckles as he follows blithely.
The hallway here is narrow and 7’ tall. The ceiling is domed up to an apex at the center of the hallway. It dead ends after a short distance. There are two doors on the right side wall. Each of these are wooden doors with rusting iron bands.
The door to this room opens normally into a large dark room filled with rotted furniture. A small rug in on the ground at the entrance to the room. There are two rotting chairs at a small, badly aged table. A plate, utensils and mug sit on the table. A bed made of material that looks fresher than the rest is in the corner. A chest made of wood and iron bands sits in the other corner of the room that appears sturdy.
Chadwick will flip the rig with his foot to make sure it isn't covering a pitfall (welcome Strarker to the land of the paranoid) if there doesn't appear to be any traps he'll step into the room and off to the side to allow anyone else that wants to come in room to do so.
Hoid, having the lowest perception in the party but controlled by the player least averse to typing, will move into the room and look about. He will closely inspect the chest. Perception roll: 11.
Assuming nothing of interest from perception, he will attempt to open the chest. If locked, he will try the key(s) that I think we found on the Spider’s corpse (but that I am too lazy to go back and confirm while typing this). If there are no keys or the keys don’t work, Hoid will lament his lack of thieves tools.
Hoid inspects the chest and finds nothing amiss. Looks like a chest. He tries to open it and finds that it is locked. He takes out the keys found on the Black Spider and tries the first to no avail. The second key turns and there is a "click" sounding like the lock is opened. He tries the latch and the chest opens. Inside the chest you find:
Small leather sack – Mushrooms, Lichens and strange tubers
Small leather sack – Grains
Small leather sack – small containers of unusual spices (25g for the collection)
The bedding seems typical. No items or things of interest are found there. The items on the table are typical tableware. They seem to have been used recently.
Trolkarl investigates the chest and finds no false bottoms or other secret compartment.
Investigation = 19
He then moves down the hall to open the remaining door there. The door opens easily. This small room is dominated by two statues on the wall opposite the stairs that lead upwards. The left statue is of a male elven wizard. His robe is covered in magical sigils and glyphs. The right statue is an elven woman wearing light armor with a drawn bow. An elven scimitar is at her side. Both are made of granite and have been chipped and damaged. The floor is dusty. There are footprints leading between the door and the stairs and up the stairs.
What is this place? Why is the spider at this ruined elf tower? Perhaps that elvish book with the griffin hide cover was something he found here or maybe brought him here.
Trolkarl will try to confirm Hoid's ideas about the stairs by going up and seeing how things connect.
If things connect, he will head to the west to the passage with doors north and south that we passed and listen at the southern door.
The stairs lead up to the secret door that enters the laboratory on that level.
Moving the western hallway:
The hallway here is narrow and 7’ tall. The ceiling is domed up to an apex at the center of the hallway. It dead ends after a short distance into a T-intersection. Each of these halls are short and end in wooden doors with rusting iron bands. There is a mural covering the opposite wall. It is faded and discolored with water damage and seeming mold growth. The mural depicts a mountain scene with a group of hunters on foot and on horseback. They seem to be hunting deer and boar is several settings. In the background is a promontory with a tall tower set at the tip. This looks much like the promontory holding this tower, except there is a tower on this promontory.

Hoid will follow Chadwick.
Trolkarl is happy to follow next.

Chadwick waggles his holy symbol at Trolkarl (not a euphemism) and exaggeratedly clears his throat.
Under his breath he mutters so only Hoid can hear "Too many thinkers, not enough do-ers".
Gneuman stares at Chadwick briefly, then shakes his head and walks away, following Hoid and Trolkarl.

No pitfalls located.

Chadwick will assist in searching, starting by searching the bed to see if there is anything under it or hidden in the bedding.

Why is this drow locking his pantry? Scared the bugbears would get his mushrooms? Let's check this a bit more
If there is no false bottom, Trolkarl suggests we proceed to the door down the corridor to the east.
