Omen would allow the mayor to lead the way to the library but would hang back for a few moments, just long enough to glance at the opened returned letters scattered around. He would try to quickly read what he could to determine if what the Mayor was saying is true. He would then also quickly pocket a few of the unopened letters if it appears that the mayor has been ignoring them.

he would then follow into the library. When Kit asks about the knight, Omen would simply turn to the mayor and repeat the question asked by his friend. "So where is the knight that was sent to aid the town? Have they been trying to find out what is happening here as well? Or are they waiting be pointed towards the enemy once they have been uncovered? Could they be persuaded to accompany us into the woods to seek out the threat?" The kenku asks while causally examining the books and scrolls for anything useful to the case.
"You could be with them... tell them what you are trying to do... not hide here like you don't really care. Show them that you do" says Thar answering to the mayor rethorical questions while the others check the books
Omen glances at the opened letters and manages to read a few sentences. From what he can tell, they are letters from townsfolk. They range from asking for help, to accusing neighbors for the disappearances, to criticizing the mayor, to outright threats to the mayor's well being. The kenku also manages to grab a few unopened letters without the mayor noticing.
The mayor glances at Thar, opens his mouth to respond then shuts it and shakes his head. It seems he's tired of arguing over this subject. Turning to Omen, he replies, "I don't know much about him other than his name, Cassian Crossheart. Like I said he doesn't seem to want to talk to me. I've even tried to speak with him at the Stonedog, but he never seemed to be there at those times. Supposedly he and his squire are looking into the disappearances, but again I don't know how much he knows. You all and that Dragonborn are the only one's to have spoken to me in regards to the case, and the dragonborn only did so to make sure I could actually pay her....which I can. I have 500gp saved for whoever solves this."
Examining the manuscripts, Omen finds that two of them are small books and one is a scroll. All of them have been severely burned and require delicate handling. Right off the bat, Omen notes that they are all written in elvish, and one of them appears to be a children's picture book.
Omen, roll slight of hand and let me know if you are going for a book or the scroll.
"I surely hope these manuscripts holds some kind of answers." says Amery. He then frowns as he looks at the oldest manuscripts from afar as he has no understanding of the elven language. "I hope one of us can read whatever they say. Omen do you know what that language is by any chance?"
OOC:WELP! I guess I obliterated the book. I thought I could use my special trait to give me advantage but I had to do it before the roll instead of afterwards.... so looks like I am stuck with the crit fail.
Omen was planning to reach for the scroll when kit holds the childrens book out in front of him. With a small beaky grin, the kenku reaches to snatch the book from her while saying. "You never know where you may find your next clue... and besides, I don't get to practice my Elvish often... perhaps this book is more my speed."

"You read Elvish as good as any non-Elf. Better than most. Elvish is a difficult language. It's all about drilling into the nuance... and the subtext... and the allegories... cultural references..." Kit stops flipping through the largest volume, "You know, you should come have dinner with me and El when we get back. It's been too long. We can all brush up our Elvish together. I promise, I won't do the cooking."
She turns back to the book and starts to skim the text.
The Mayor retreats back to the sitting room just before the kenku moves to snatch the picture book. There is a quiet ripping noise as the pages of the ancient children's book completely tear in half. Before he knows it, Omen has crushed the half pages in his hand, which are now crumbled into an unrecognizable clump of dust. Kit holds the remains of the book's spine in her hand, however there's not much left of it... Maybe the mayor won't notice how you completely and utterly destroyed this piece of history?
Kit puts the ruined book down, and moves to the larger volume. As soon as she lifts it, it is clear that despite it still looking ancient, it's not as old as the other two. This one seems to be a complete history of the town's finances up until about 200 years ago. Basically it shows the town's growth as a trading village as well as naming the mayor's and treasurers, along with what taxes were put into place. All in all, Kit is unable to glean much from it...other than maybe a headache from all the numbers.
All that's left now is the scroll. (I won't make ya'll roll for this XD) Now wary of destroying another potential clue, Omen picks up the scroll. Unrolling it, he finds that half of it has already been lost. The scroll has little writing on it, and instead it contains several rubbings. There is a single note above the first one. It reads (in elvish) "Found in the woods outside Withermore. These five drawings were carved in stone." There are two intact rubbings on the scroll. The first shows a young elf girl with a raven perched on her shoulder and a stag at her side. She holds a hand out over a bush, half of which has blooming flowers while the other half has withered and dead. The second shows a woman with her hands spread out to each side. To her left there are people kneeling and holding their hands up to her, flowers, trees and vines growing around them. To the left, figures are pointing and raising fists towards her. Vines grow on this side too, but they all bear prominent thorns and the trees on this side have no leaves.
"So, what do you think, is she punishing the wicked or rewarding the faithful? Maybe a bit of both? Should we come bearing offerings to Witch Queen of Withermore?" Kit says, hoping her glibness hides the pounding in her chest.
"I'm always willing to eat" The kenku replies to kit with a smile before his eyes go wide, realizing what he had done to the book. "Oh... Uh. Do any of you happen to know the mending cantrip by chance?" Omen asks as he tries to hold the crushed remains in his hand. "Looks like this book was in worse condition than I had thought." He would whisper before gently sitting the remains off to the side and then placing the other half of the book on top.
"Druids indeed..." Omen says with a frown. "I would agree with your interpretation Kit. "Perhaps when we head into the woods... we should bring presents along with torches."
Thar tries to move down the library the remmants of the destroyed pages while Kit tries to mend the book
"Thing is, druids like the balance of the nature... perhaps is what the second drawing means... nature sometimes bring good harvests and weather and sometimes is harsh winters and rotten crops. Wha I do not understand is that the actions with the leaf creatures and all the dissapearances looks to me more like an umbalance than trying to reach one.. maybe the druids have lost their way? or they feel that balance needs to be restored in other place?"
"Humph. As much as I don't like your point, it's a good one. Maybe I'm confusing the cause and effect. Maybe it's showing that the people are turning on her because the harvest is bad, not her making things bad to punish them?"
"I don't know, I'm still inclined to read it my way. This is about revenge."
Taking the destroyed remains of the children's book, Kit attempts to mend the manuscript. Unfortunately, the book was already extremely damaged before Omen got his talons on it. However, Kit is able to salvage one page with her magic. It so happens to be the page six. Looking at the page, it shows an elven woman on a throne sitting inside a simplistic pentagram. It's fully colored, and the image is framed with dark vines with thorns and roses. You would assume the image went with a verse to a children's rhyme, but there's no way of knowing what that poem was now.
"I'm sure that's is just a coincidence, right," Kit asks the others unconvincingly, "I mean, they're both in Elvish, so of course the pictures are of Elves. And roses and thornes are great for symbolism. Beauty and danger. Duality."
Kit unconsciously backs away from the page.
"You know, we're probably just wasting time here. Let's get some torches and check out the woods," she says with an obvious shudder.
Omen looks from the page to kit and then just shrugs. "I agree, let's get going." He says before trying to position the book in such a way where it isn't immediatly obvious that it has been destroyed, hoping to avoid a confrontation.
