As Omen and Kit head for home, the kenku would look to kit with a slightly nervous look upon his face. "Hey... do you mind if we make a quick stop on the way back? I... I have something I want to show you." Omen says with a rather serious tone. it is a tone that you don't often hear him use, at least not with you. It somewhat reminds of of how he spoke to you when you first met at your home many moons ago...
As you travel, Omen seems slightly distracted. He acts like himself but seems to drift away in thought as you make your way closer to his destination. As you travel, Kit begins to recognize more of the countryside and before long, you are at the gates of a small village. The village is small and quiet as Omen leads the way down the main street. Although it has been a long time, Kit instantly recognizes the village as the place where her old adventuring companions were laid to rest. The kenku is silent as he makes his way down the street... seemingly focused on making his way to his destination. Occasionally he looks over his shoulder to make sure that Kit is still behind him before strolling into the cemetery. Once inside the cemetery, Omen heads straight towards the two headstones marking the final resting places of her old companions. A moment later, Omen moves to reveal a 3rd headstone placed directly next to the other two. This headstone is engraved with the name "Katiara Skye - First Daughter of house Skye". "I told your parents that lady Katiara Skye was dead. She had been killed by bandits and her body had been badly burned. I actually told them only a few months after meeting you Kit." The kenku removes his hat and holds it tightly in his gloved hands... squeezing it as though it may try to escape. "I... didn't want to tell you at first because I feared that you would leave once you didn't need me anymore." Omen says with a heavy sigh. "I used the money your parents paid me to "acquire" the bones of an old half-elf woman that died of natural causes. After charring them I buried them here in case your family were to ever decide to investigate your grave site... I even forged a death certificate to provide your parents. I also made sure that the Heir to the Duchy of Karakos heard about Katiara's demise as well. I spent the last of the coin I had to acquire and forge proper birth certificates for Kit Forthall. I took the liberty of making this village the place of your birth. I though it seemed fitting since it was Katiara's resting place" Omen says as he looks up from his hat and locks eyes with kit. Tears begin to run down his face.
"I'm sorry for not telling you sooner. At first I was just waiting for the right time... and then over time I started to think of you as a daughter and feared that you might not have need of me once you knew you were free" He admits as he wipes his eyes with the back of his gloved hand. " But...I have done everything I can to ensure that Katiara Skye is dead. Now with the gold we earned from the WIthermore job... Kit Forthall is free to do whatever she wants with whoever she wants... Kit can live whatever life she sees fit." Omen pauses for a bit longer before giving her a shaky smile. "I just hope that you still want me to be a part of that new life."
Omen's nervousness is contagious and it only grows as Kit begins to recognize their path. Still, she continues to convince herself that the way is just coincidental; even as they pass the place where her party has been ambushed by bandits, the burned shell of the 'cannibal' house, the valley where they had faced off against the wolf pack...
And then she's back. To her surprise, things had changed for the better. With Thar's help, the druid had been defeated, the mines reopened, and Kit's lost companions recovered. With the mines reopened, Heaven has once again become a place of prosperity and hope.
"They owe this to you, Thar," Kit thinks as joy and sadness mingle in her heart, "you finished what we started."
They pass other places as well. The footbridge on the path to the shrine of Kiltzi where she realized for the first time she was in love with Eila. The tavern where they had the first date that was meant to be a farewell. The inn where they held each other and cried over their losses while the exterior wounds healed.
The inner ones never did.
As they approach the graveyard, the fear strikes her like a dark beast inside of her clawing it's way up her throat.
If it was anyone but Omen, she would refuse to take another step.
And then they are there. Galen, her fellow Half-Elf. A son of mercenaries with the noble soul of a knight. He had sacrificed his life blocking the door until Kit and Elia could escape, traded his life for theirs without a moment's hesitation.
Next was the Halfling, Belton, every bit as stubborn and opinionated as she was. It seemed that if she called something white he would call it black just to spite her. They fought constantly.
She never got to tell him that she loved him like her own brother.
But the tears don't come until she sees the third headstone.
Every day since that one, she had told herself that she should have died there next to them.
Thanks to Omen, she had...
"You're free," she thinks to herself, "finally, truly free."
Sobbing, she nearly collapses into the Kenku's arms. He could have turned her in. He could have lied to her parents and kept the money for himself. Instead, he had given all and risked his very reputation.
For her. To give her a life of her own.
How can one ever repay such a debt?
You can't.
"Why now," she asks, smoothing his feathers on his face and wiping away the tears that have fallen there.
Omen braces himself expecting to be slapped and caught off guard when she wipes the tears from his face. It takes him a moment process what is happening and after a few seconds he answers Kit. "Why now?... Well... I..." The kenku pauses for a bit. "When we first met... I blackmailed you into working for me. I needed someone to trust... someone to count on... and in exchange for your help I promised not to take you back to your parents." The kenku looks to the ground as feelings of guilt and shame swell inside. "I felt like so long as the status quo remained the same... I would always always be able to count on you... because you wouldnt want to risk being sent back to your dreadful parents." Omen takes a deep breath and looks back up to Kit and locks eyes with her. "But then I got to know you. I got to know Eli. I kept an eye on you to make sure that you wouldn't try to skip town and get away from me... and It didn't take me long to see that you were something special." Omen continued to squeeze his hat as he spoke. He felt as though he were confessing to the biggest crime of his life to a judge and was expecting to be thrown behind bars for good. "So I got to work in setting you free... making sure Katiara was dead and bringing Kit to life... but all the while I was afraid of changing the status quo... because I was afraid of losing you..." He pauses one more time and pulls out a bag of coins that contains his share of the reward money and holds ot out to Kit. "I knew after we completed this job I was going to tell you... Because after this payout you and Eli would have enough coin to live a comfortable life. You wouldn't NEED to help me with jobs for the coin anymore. You wouldn't NEED to spend time with me for fear of me turning you in to your parents after you knew the truth... You would be in a prefect position to cut me out of your life for good if you wanted." He then let's out a small nervous laugh. "Actually... you have more than enough dirt on me to have me locked up for a long time after everything I just told you..."
"But... I just wanted you to know the truth now because it was tearing me up inside and because I... needed to know if you would still want me in your life if you no longer NEEDED me in your life." He pauses for a second before continuing. "Also, after nearly getting killed on this trip, the thought of you NEVER finding out that you were free was terrifying."
As Omen stands and speaks... he feels more and more like a really lousy person.
"Nine Hells," she says as she gives the Kenku another uncomfortably tight hug, "for someone so smart you can really say some stupid things."
"Of course we still want you in our lives! You've been more of a family to El and I than either of our families ever were!"
"Besides," she adds jokingly to hold the tears at bay and gesturing to where Twig is playing among the graves, "The gods know El and I are going to need all the help we can get with that one."
She gives a heavy sigh. "The truth is, the first time a met you I didn't know whether to stab you or run. But either way I knew two truths, I'd have to leave Baldur's Gate and Elia would insist on coming with me."
"I couldn't do that to her," she says looking into Omen's eyes, "so I stayed. And it's the second best thing that ever happened to me. And the best thing that's ever happened to Elia and I. Working for you gave me something I'd lost, the belief that I could make a difference."
She gives him a smug smile and a wink, "And I figured out a long time ago that I was too valuable to you to betray."
"But this," she gestures to the grave, "is more than I ever could have imagined. More than I ever would have dared to ask for. You didn't have to do this, but I'm grateful."
She hands the coins back to Omen.
"I don't want this. We don't need it. Ilmater will provide for us. Just cover my expenses once we get back. Oh, and promise me that you're going to come to dinner. After all, we're family."
Omen smiles wide and hugs Kit tightly. "I'll be there." He says as he wipes his eyes. "You know... you may get tired of seeing me. With all this coin I won't need to work as much. I can be more picky in what kinds of cases I take... which could leave me with a lot more free time to spend with you and Eli... and now the kids." He adds with a small laugh.
Baldur's Gate Is busy as ever in the weeks since Omen and Kit returned from their latest job. The days are getting colder as the sun seems to set earlier and earlier each night. This morning street vendors are working to setup their stalls in preparation of the upcoming Liar's night festivities. They only have one more day to prepare before the celebration begins, and the city is working tirelessly to prepare.
As Thar arrives in Baldur's gate, he cannot help but notice the many colorful fliers and banners placed around town heralding the upcoming Liar's Night celebrations. The largest of these banners reads "Join Lady Zephyr at the Liar's Night Carnaval! All proceeds to benefit the orphan children of Faerun!". The banner sways gently in the breeze as it hangs across the main street into the city.
Parents and children alike take trips to nearby pumpkin patches so that they may each carve their own pumpkins before the festivities start the next day. It is tradition that everyone that plans to participate in the festivities carve their own pumpkin and place a lit candle inside. It is supposedly bad luck if your candle is extinguished before the night is over... and to destroy someone else's pumpkin or blow out their candle is to risk the wrath of the gods themselves.
Omen makes his way down the street with his top hat bobbing above the rest of the crowd. In his arms he is holding a large pumpkin that he struggles to hold in his gloved hands. After what feels like forever he arrives at the door of Kit and Eli's house. Omen struggles to knock on the door with the pumpkin in his arms, breathing heavily as he waits for the door to open for him.
The door swings open, and Telron's familiar face peaks through. He smiles, "Hi Uncle Omen! Oh wow a pumpkin! Dwoow-"He gasps as Twig suddenly shoves him through the door to squint at omen suspiciously.
"Hey what was that for!" Telron glares at Twig after catching his balance. Twig ignores him.
"Hmmmm. How do I know you are actually Mr. Birdman?" She says, before scurrying out and jumping up to pat Omen on the beak. Then she grins, "Ok I believe it's you. If that were a costume it would have fallen off! And illusions aren't tangible." She nods.
"Pushing me still wasn't necessary."Telron grumbles.
"Hey! You know you can't just go hitting everyone you meet over the next two days" Omen replies to Twig as he steps inside the house. "Excuse me Telron." The kenku says as he moves past the young boy. Once inside the house he places the pumpkin on the table and proceeds to rub his beak a bit. "The pumpkin is for carving! We all need to carve them. If Kit and Eli havn't got any then we may have to go run and pick some out before tomorrow. It's tradition after all." Omen says as he adjusts his hat. "You can't have any fun tomorrow night if you don't have a carved pumkin with a candle inside... Otherwise bad things will happen to you." He then pauses and scratches the bottom of his beak. "I assume Thar has not arrived yet? I hope he brings a pumpkin too. If not we will just have to get him one as well!" He says to the children with a beaky smile.
Although Omen tries to hide his excitement, the kenku is practically beaming with joy and can hardly wait for the festivities to begin.
Twig giggles at Omen's comment. Wordlessly saying, 'who says I can't?' as she crosses her arms looking smug. Then she watches him curiously as he explains what the pumpkin is for. Then a wicked grin spreads across her face. "Hehehe. I think I know what you're talking about. I doubt bad things will happen, but I still wanna dig a knife into one of those things! HAHA I'll give it the scariest face EVER!" She laughs following Omen inside.
"Enough bad things have happened to us already. I'm not taking any chances." Telron says smiling softly as he also follows Omen. "I haven't seen Mr. Thar yet. Hopefully he arrives soon."
"OMEN!" Kit calls out joyfully. There's an awkward moment where she tries to hug the Kenku around the pumpkin before realizing it's impossible and offering to take it from him.
"It's so good to see you! Have you heard from Thar? We expected him in this morning but he hasn't arrived yet. Eila's so sorry she missed both of you. She's working in the infirmary tonight so she can sneak over to the orphanage and celebrate Liar's Night with them."
"Don't worry, she left me very, very detailed recipes for the pies and toasting the pumpkin seeds."
"Yes, that's me,"Kit says as she casts a meaningful glance at Omen. Ever since she learned the truth a weight of fear and anxiety had been lifted from her shoulders. She was Kit Forthall, in the law as much as in her own soul. She could scarcely imagine anything terrible enough to compel her to deny it.
"It is good to see you as well!" The kenku replies with a wide smile. "I have not seen Thar yet. Hopefully he arrives soon. I have a job proposal for him and everyone else here." He says to Kit before shooting a wink towards Twig.
A look of concern spreads across Omens face when a guard approaches the door and asks about Kit. I stands nearby with his hands instinctively disappearing inside of his jacket.
"Thanks to the Gods" says the guard "Would you be so kind to come with me please? The sergeant of the west gate asks for you. Nothing to worry about" he says to calm any alarm "It seems that there is a problem with certain individual... he claims that he comes to the city to visit you and... well... we would like to check it for this individual is... hmmm.. unusual... so... if you don't mind to come with me please? I am sure that is all a misunderstanding and it will not take you much time.. "
"Well... hmm.. yes... yes it is... we thought that he had heard your name somewhere and was trying to fool us to let him inside the city. " explains the guard... "how come that you..." he starts to ask but then realizes that she would have to answer the same questions to the sergeant soon so he simply adds "Well... I think that the sergeant will be very pleased to hear your explanations... " as they keep walking towards the west gate he simply comments "Gods... the guy is tall... isn't he?"
Soon they are at the garrison in the west gate and seated in front of the sergeant in charge, a middle aged man with a big moustache that he keeps passing a couple of fingers over it as he hears the guard report.
"So... you do actually know this creature that goes by the name Thar?"
"I do. He saved my life. Several times."She answers coldly.
"Is there some kind of problem here, sergeant? I've seen goblins in the city, and orcs. I fail to see how a Bugbear would be any different, even if I didn't know his character."
Omen nods at Kits words. "Thar recently helped save an entire village from a bunch of bloodsucking plants and their evil master" The kenku speaks up, moving to shake the sergeants hand. "If not for him, we would all be dead. Thar is family." He adds.
Omen is well known by the city guards and has often helped solve some of their tougher cases... even if his methods are not always the most conventional.
Looking from the Sergeant to Kit and then back to the Sergeant, he continues. "Where is Thar? We have a lot to get done before tomorrow night and a walk to the garrison wasnt really part of the plan." The kenku asks with a hint of agitation in his voice.
"Well all those citizens you speak of are known by the authorities... we are just doing our job. " says the sergeant with a little hint of irritation in his voice " I am sorry if that disrupts your plans... " he says looking to Omen. "Bring him" he says to one of the guards who salutes and disappears from the room "As far as you answer for him, I will not send to check if this claims of good deeds are true or not... if he wants to apply for citizenship though... some checks would be necessary I am afraid... "
Not a moment later the door opens again and the immense figure of a bugbear squeezes himself thought it and Thar begins to smile when he sees Kit and Omen in the room.
"Kit!! Omen!!"he exclaims "I am so happy to see you.."
