With the goblins' hostile intentions now clearly evident, Aeleth abandons his initial plan to cast Sleep and decides to engage the goblins in close-quarters combat, utilizing his shortsword and dagger to neutralize the threat swiftly.
He dashes forward, his movements fueled by adrenaline and focused intent. The goblins, caught off guard by Aeleth's sudden charge, stumble backward, momentarily disoriented. Aeleth seizes the opportunity, his blade flashing as he slashes at the nearest goblin, a creature with two rough copper earrings in his left ear.
The goblin yelps in pain as Aeleth's blade overcomes his defenses with incredible ease, penetrates the damaged leather of the armor... and slips between two ribs, finding the heart and killing him!
Greasy Hair goblin says: "Damn quick elf!" and he shoots his arrow at Aaleth, trying to aim to the side of the surviving goblin so as not to risk hitting him by mistake.
The 'quick elf' moves too fast for Greasy Hair Goblin to aim well and the arrow gets lost in a dark corner of the cave.
The surviving scimitar-wielding goblin, Big Eyes Goblin (a goblin with large eyes that seem constantly wide in wonder or terror), tries to push Aeleth away with a crude but desperate slash.
Despair gives Big Eyes Goblin unexpected speed and the blade manages to hit the agile elf wizard before he can avoid it... and the force of the blow is such that it overcomes even the defense of the Mage Armor spell still active. Aeleth rolls her eyes and gasps following the nasty wound to her abdomen... and collapses to the ground on her own blood.
"Aeleth!" Torrga exclaims, anguished, and immediately tries to hit Big Eyes Goblin's head with a swing of her warhammer, while she raises a quick prayer to Marthammor Duin, her god, channeling its healing energy onto Aeleth.
Big Eyes Goblin feels Torrga's warhammer pass a hair's breadth from his head and, shivering, steps back, while Aeleth, completely healed by Torrga's holy power, reopens his eyes.
Merric reaches, shortsword in hand, Big Eyes Goblin and launches a lunge while the goblin still seems shaken by the warhammer blow that missed him so narrowly.
Big Eyes Goblin realizes the danger only when the cruel steel pierces his flesh, under the armpit, where the armor does not protect. With a gasp not unlike the one he had elicited from Aeleth shortly before, the goblin collapses to the ground, in a pool of blood.
Lola then launches herself at Greasy Hair Goblin, maneuvering to get behind him and thus cut off his retreat. The mighty warrior swings her Greataxe in a wide arc...
...which Greasy Hair Goblin manages to dodge by suddenly ducking. He throws his bow to the ground and draws a scimitar, determined to sell his life dearly.
With newfound vigor, Aeleth rises to his feet, his eyes ablaze with determination. He has survived this encounter, and he is not about to let this goblin escape his retribution.
He charges forward, his blade glinting in the dim light of the cavern. Greasy Hair Goblin, seeing Aeleth's unwavering resolve, braces himself for the inevitable confrontation.
With his combination of shortsword and dagger, Aeleth delivers a devastating blow, mortally wounding the goblin. Greasy Hair Goblin lets out a gurgling cry as the life drains from his body, collapsing to the ground, his lifeless eyes staring up at the cavern's damp ceiling.
[[Gratz! You won!]]
"Aeleth, are you okay?" Lola approaches, worried, examining the place where the wizard's tunic was torn by the goblin's scimitar and stained with his blood... But Torrga's magic has healed the wound completely, not even a trace remains of it (except, in fact, on her dress) - Lola sighs with relief and impulsively hugs the elf "Yes, thank the gods, you're safe".
"Thanks to Marthammor Duin, you mean," Torrga corrects her good-naturedly "who isn't also known as 'the Watcher over Wanderers' for nothing".
“Yes, of course, yes” Lola agrees. “Thanks to Marthammor Duin – and to you, Torrga”. The imposing mulatto turns again then immediately to Aeleth "When I saw you fall... I feared I had lost you. I'm sorry I was so slow to react... it should have been me, the one among the goblins to attract their attacks".
"No need to apologize, Lola," Aeleth assures her, patting the mulatto warrior on the shoulder. "You fought bravely, and your intervention was crucial to our victory. We all contributed to this success, and we should celebrate it together."
Now that the goblins are dead, Merric picks up the deceased Greasy Hair Goblin's shortbow and quiver of arrows and passes them to Aeleth, asking: "Do you want them? Where I come from, they say elves are great archers... they might be useful to you".
Meanwhile, Torrga notes: "The goblins built simple dams to control the flow of water through the heart of the complex. But these dams... have collapsible walls that can be yanked out of place to release a surge of water down the main passage of the lair! It would be enough to knock away the supports... and a flood could be unleashed in the passage below. I don't understand what use it could be".
"Maybe it's a defense measure..." Lola reflects "If someone came from the passages below, unleashing a flood could wipe out the invaders. Maybe that's exactly what would have happened to us, if we hadn't chosen the other route, the one that forced us to climb".
However, there are two passages to the west that exit this cave. One to the north-west, which descends along natural steps until returning along the course of the stream, practically under the dam. One to the south-west, which remains at the same level as this cave and shortly after turns towards the west or perhaps even north-west.
With the goblins defeated and the situation under control, Aeleth accepts Merric's offering, grateful for the unexpected weapon and ammunition. He examines the shortbow and quiver, intrigued by the possibilities it presents.
"Thank you, Merric," Aeleth says, admiring the smooth, well-crafted bow. "I've always wanted to try my hand at archery. Perhaps this will be the opportunity."
Torrga's observation about the dams sparks curiosity among the group. The intricate design of the dams, with their collapsible walls, suggests a more complex function than mere water control. What purpose could such a device serve?
Lola's theory about the dams being used as a defensive measure seems plausible. It would be a formidable weapon to unleash against any intruder, especially if the dam was positioned strategically.
With two passages leading west, the group faces a decision: to follow the route along the stream, potentially encountering the flood mechanism, or to take the higher passage, which could lead them to new discoveries.
"We need to consider our options carefully," Aeleth suggests. "The lower passage could lead us to Sildar, but it also exposes us to the risk of the flood. The higher passage might be safer, but it could take us further away from Sildar. We could split up... This way, we can cover more ground and gather more information, increasing our chances of finding Sildar and navigating the Cragmaw hideout effectively.
“Aeleth, you have a quick and great intelligence,” Torrga observes “but wisdom probably also needs to be taken into account. It is true that by dividing ourselves we can cover more ground and gather more information, increasing our chances of finding Sildar and navigating the Cragmaw hideout effectively. But it is also true that we will be more vulnerable. Divided, we will be defeated more easily, in case of problems... Is it worth taking this risk?"
"If we're afraid of the flood..." suggests Merric "why not unleash it ourselves? We're safe here and we can't get hit by the flood. Let's just knock away the supports ourselves from here. It's easy - in fact even the goblins could do it. Once the flood has been unleashed, it will not be possible to unleash it again... Both because the collapsible wall must be erected again, and because, once the wall has been erected, it will take time for the water to fill the artificial basin. The trap certainly cannot be used against us before we finish the exploration".
Torrga's words hold wisdom, reminding the group that while splitting up can expand their search capabilities, it also increases their vulnerability. In the face of potential dangers, the group must weigh the risks and benefits carefully.
Merric's suggestion to unleash the flood themselves is an intriguing one. It would eliminate the threat of a surprise attack from the lower passage, allowing them to move forward with greater confidence. However, it would also disrupt the natural flow of the stream, potentially causing damage to the hideout or endangering any creatures living in the area.
The group must carefully consider the consequences of their actions before making a decision. They must balance their desire to move forward efficiently with the need to protect themselves and the surrounding environment.
