The priest strokes his beard thoughtfully for a moment, before he gives his answer to Korba.
"Many of these curses were crafted by the gods themselves," he says at last. "In your case, it seems that whoever wished to prevent you from claiming this sword as yours was favored by either Lolth or Vhaeraun.
"Do you know who may have cursed my belt?", Hewelathan asks hopefully. "Maybe if I knew who cursed it, the curse and its bounds would become more clear."
- I can help with that. You see, this staff allows me to cast spells that would otherwise be impossible for an inexperienced sorcerer such as me. One of them allows me to teleport a group of persons to a plane of my choice.
Hewelathan looks at her staff again, wide-eyed. He glances at Rhaenys and tries to reassess her. Or...him? He doesn't know whether she's even female. Is this body closer to her true form and age? She seems young, but she wields unlooked-for power. He glances at the others, considering what wondrous powers their items hold.
- What is this Eternal plane anyway? I have never heard of such place. Also did you heard what that man said before he left? He said he will get what he desires. I think we made an enemy for ourselves. At least he cleared up that he wanted the items and not to help us. We should be wary of him.
Hewelathan tries to be helpful and tell what he knows. (arcana 17)
While Tytus puts on his new amulet, Hewelathan begins to explain: "My order teaches that this world, not only the land, but also the seas and the sky--indeed, even the sun and moon and stars!--is but one realm, or 'plane'. And this realm was fashioned by the gods from the four elements--fire, earth, water, and air--and from light and dark. Even you, yourself! Your body that houses your spirit: it is made of earth and water, fire and air, light and dark! And those who understand that can reshape the body's material and clothe their spirit in other forms. According to the archdruids, our realm is just one of many. Indeed--there are entire realms, like ours!--but with their own lands and waters, different stars in the sky and a different moon. You could not travel from here to there, not if you journeyed for 100 years across land and sea. Our entire realm--the wide world, the sky above, the waters below, the sun, the moon, and the stars--it is like an island. It floats in a gray sea of swirling mists. The Ethereal sea. But it is not water nor even mists like we know them in our realm."
"Apparently, it is difficult to explain the nature of the Ethereal sea those who have never seen it," Hewelathan says apologetically. You get the impression that he himself has asked his masters and is now repeating the answer he was given. "The Ethereal sea touches all of those realms, linking them. But not like a sea since it also suffuses them. And there are other realms, unlike ours, where each element is in its purest form. A realm of water, where there is no sky or stars, just an endless sea with no beaches, with no sea floor nor even a surface. Or an entire realm of flame and fire, hotter than any fire or forge, hotter even than a dragon's breath. And again, these elemental realms float in the Ethereal sea and are connected to the other realms by it."
Hewelathan has mostly been talking almost like an apprentice reciting a lesson for his master. He stops now and looks at the others, "But these matters are beyond the skills of a novice. Most druids of my order concern ourselves with this realm--or plane--the world where we live and its wild places, and the plants and creatures who live there. It is only the most powerful archdruids who claim to have left this realm, to have traveled this Ethereal sea, and even to have visited these other realms." He sounds at once excited and afraid of the prospect.
- I agree. Let's stick together. That will improve our chances, now that we now have to fight not only our curses, but that Firion too. Also, you all seem nice! - she adds, smiling.
Hewelathan looks happy that the conversation is turning away from dark wizards, the Ethereal plane, and kingdoms of undead rule by liches and toward something more practical and immediate. He smiles warmly and says in a jolly, enthusiastic tone, "Yes, I will join you! Happily! If you'll have me. Rhaenys is wise. The strength of a pack of wolves is in each individual wolf, but the strength of each wolf is in the pack. We will be stronger if we stick together."
"As you may have guessed, I am a druid. Still just a novice! When the archdruids of my order could not help me with the curse laid upon this belt, they sent me here, to the Temple of Ilmater. I had no plans after that, and there is little else I can do until the curse is broken. I have traveled for many days just to come here, and whether by fate or great fortune, we have all arrived here together. Shall we make a pact? None of us will rest, nor will we abandon anyone in this group, until all of our curses are solved or until all of us together agree to disband."
Tytus did not felt sure about these people as they seemed too eager to band together. But on the other hand he himself thought of it as best idea. Maybe they just have their reasons too. His first reaction to the word pact was repulsive, but on the other hand that is something biding. And as he did not felt sure about his own capabilities, maybe sticking with these people long enough will eventually lead to salvation. Pact is all right as long as you do it conscious and calm.
- I like your choosing of words Hewelathan. I want to make a pact as well. I think if we all agree on a pact we should do some binding ceremony, Nothing fancy, just something symbolic. How do you feel about that?

"A Lich??" Korba replies, clearly feeling the same as the priest at first. "There are few beings more against nature than them. Yet, if that is the only way, and if this Lich is... trustworthy..."the word was difficult to say in this context, "...or at least our only lead, then it seems we have little choice."
Looking then to Tytus, he says, "we need no ceremony. We are already bound together by whatever it is that brought us together today, and the desire to free ourselves of our curses. As long as our interests align, and we have common enemies, there is little reason to not travel together."
- That is exactly what i mean. If only common interests bind us, what will happen when that changes? If we manage to take the curse away from 3 items, those people have no more need to go to dangerous places and help others. Those remaining 3 when left would have less chance to achieve their goal than those first 3. That is why i like Hewelathan offer to make a pact. Being bound by whatever it is does not spark trust in me. I believe we need to trust ourselves with our lives. I never met any Lich or angry spirit of warriors, but that sounds deadly. I want to be sure you would do everything you can to protect me, so i can have the same mind set towards you. How do you feel about that?
The High Priest can't help but nod along with Korba's outburst.
"I doubt it will come as a surprise to you that I don't consider any undead 'trustworthy,'" he sighs. "But... yes, as much as I hate to say it, he is likely your best lead. There is little more that I can do for you now, but if you all need a place to stay for the night then the temple is more than willing to welcome you... in the meantime, I think I had better get to work warding this place against further unwanted intrusions by a certain necromancer. In the morning you may book passage, but it may be difficult to persuade any sane captain to take you to the Shaded Isle."

Jodie seems willing to join the group, but is not accustomed to a form a 'pact' with such serious-minded folk. "I have never turned a back on a friend, but we just met. I hope our paths lead to a good ending for all, but I don't know if I can take on all your burdens with my own. While our paths align, I will happily join you."
Tytus wants to argue more, but then realizes that maybe he went a little overboard. After all not these people are different than him. He had to come to terms with a pact. It felt wrong to him at first too. And when he thought about it honestly, all that was to ensure safety and care for himself. Going to some island of undead is simply scary. It would be not fair to expect such devotion to him from others. He would have to man up and take responsibility for himself. That is how you win your life and freedom back.
- Ok... ok. Maybe i got a little to excited and... i don't know. I will be glad if we can travel and tackle on our curses together. I don't expect anything more from you lot. I am thankful for you willingness to help and i will whatever is with my power to help you all as well. It is getting late and i am tired. I will take on that offer high priest and would like to stay here for the night. I guess then we will see each other tomorrow morning?
With those last words he forgot himself a little and looked up to his new companions. He wanted to see their faces, to read them a little. He wasn't sure if he did not just pushed them away too much. But with that sign of affection from him his ring activated.

Hewelathan says, "Yes, it doesn't need to be a sacred oath. But as Tytus said, we don't know which curse will be lifted first and which one last. It just seems fair to agree now when we don't know whose curse will be lifted first: if we all help, we should all benefit. If you risk your life among the dread undead and traversing the Deep Ethereal to help me, then even if my belt's curse is lifted first, I will not abandon you all."
"I would not trust anyone if I had to force them into an agreement. But any who wish can join me in this:" He holds out his open hand, palm up, for others to take and says, "we pledge to continue helping each other as long as we can or until the curse on every other pledge's magic item that was presented here today has been lifted or resolved."
"I'd be glad to talk to some captains tomorrow. I can be quite persuasive."
Hewelathan says, "If the so-called Shaded Isle is across the sea, we'll need to reach a port city first. I think that the sea is at least a day away from here as the crow flies. Probably longer since we'll be walking along the road. We'll get directions from the priests tomorrow."
With that, Hewelathan is ready to accept whatever hospitality the temple offers. He's been sitting on the hard floor of the temple's audience chamber most of the afternoon, and his stomach is starting to growl audibly.
- Let's not forget that our curses are not our only burden now. Whey we are rid of them we will still need to face Firion, who will of course be even more eager to get his hands on those magic items. We'd better stick together until both problems are solved. So - and she places her hand on Hewelathan's - I pledge to continue helping each other until we are free from our curses and free from Firion.
Before the High Priest leaves to let them rest for the night, Rhaenys approaches him:
- I'm sorry in advance if I'm asking too much, but seeing the many dangers that await us, and though we seem to have capable healers in this party, I wonder if the temple could give us a few healing potions? Even the weakest potions could come in handy if our healers were badly hurt.(Persuasion: 19)
With that, she'll share whatever dinner the temple may offer, and then rest for the night.

Tytus appears again and approaches Hewelathan with hand out to reach his and Raenhys and repeats after them: I pledge to continue helping each other as long as we can or until the curse on every other pledge's magic item that was presented here today has been lifted or resolved.
Upon receiving two potions of healing Tytus seems a little embarrassed and says: Thank you very much, that is mighty generously of you. I am astonished by your faith in us and i will do what is in my power to come back here some day without a curse to stand in front of ilmater and say that i endured it all. And when that happens i will be more thankful than proud, as i know already that only with help it will be achieved.
After that he stays visible with his head down, but if someone would be to observe him, that person would see a wide grin on his face. Tytus is also ready to get rest after that evening full of emotions.
(sorry a lot to catch up but I will try to summarize )
When the situation is clear and it seems that the drow is no threat and the bugbear is no real bugbear the human calmed down... relieved would be more precise to say and introduced himself as one Flinn Mc'rowan novice paladin of the order of Tyr. He didn't speak of a curse per se but he says something about make his sword more open-minded.
When the necromancer appeared he jumped on his feet but at least his first intention was not to flee but he put himself between the high priest and the necromancer. With that other voice he said "Even I am little impressed there is hope for you..."
He acceted the present of the Ilmater clerics, a belt and a couple of potions with a reverence.
"I do not know any of you either but... but I guess that you can count on me to help you get rid of your curses. I mean... I do not guess you can count on me. It's not that you have to doubt me it's just.. that I doubt myself... all this, sacred weapons, curses, necromancers, the etheral plane? a lich?!" he feels sick as he talks about it and have to take a sit "I just feel so out of my league that I doubt my skills would be useful to you but if that necromancer wants our items I do think that it doesn't sound like a great idea to give them to him and that we can help each other. Maybe when you lift your curses he loses interest on them... "
He is more than ready to go to sleep and be ready in the next morning.

The priests and priestesses give you all a hot meal and roll out bedding for the night. If there is nothing else that you need to do, the night passes uneventfully.
Hewelathan thanks the priests for the meal, but once they're no longer close enough to hear, he comments to the others, "I didn't realize that the followers of Ilmater were such ascetics! But maybe always being hungry teaches them to bear up under suffering." The meal seems like a normal dinner to you, but Hewelathan finishes his quickly and starts asking whether they want their roll, etc. Before dinner is even done, he's rummaging in his backpack and munching on some nuts and other dried food.
The morning light wakes you early.
What will you all do next?
After Hewelathan wakes, he tries to find a garden or at least a bench outside where he can feel the open breeze on his face. He's hoping for sunshine, but he's not surprised to find that it's still cloudy and a light drizzle of rain has started. He tries to enjoy the rainfall, communing with Nature and reflecting the last 24 hours and the day ahead (i.e., preparing spells). The previous day, Hewelathan had arrived here just hoping for some assistance with the problems related to his magic belt. Now, he knows more about the nature of that problem, and he has a group of companions who share a similar problem. They've also learned that there's an evil necromancer who wants to take their magic items, and their only hope may lie with a lich on the dreaded Shaded Isle and some mysterious assistance that they must seek in the Deep Ethereal.
When Hewelathan is done, he rejoins the others and asks about breakfast. (If there's nothing available, he'll get out some of his own food to break fast.) He says, "Be sure to put on your traveling cloaks. It looks like we'll at least be starting in the rain." He sounds apologetic about being the bearer of this bad news.
Once there are any priests available, he asks them for directions to the nearest port city on the sea. He also asks, "Is Sister Eila available at the temple? We would like to ask her some questions before we head out."
In the morning Korba wakes up, and if they were sharing a room, he reaches and puts on his sunglasses to cover his eyes before even opening them. He dusts off his backpack, though it seems strange to be as dusty as it is after just one night, and repacks all of his gear carefully and methodically. Pulling and tying his long hair back to prepare for the road he then heads down to breakfast, all of his gear ready and loaded.
Finishing all of his breakfast, he’s not quite ready to share any of his bread with the others yet. After eating he pulls his cloak up, looks outside, gets his gear comfortably on his back, and is ready to begin the day’s march.
Rhaenys doesn't need much preparation, so she'll just have a light breakfast and go through her belongings to see everything is as it should be. She's quite surprised to find that the staff hasn't changed her appearance yet. It seems it has had his fill yesterday, but the Changeling is sure it will happen sooner or later.
"I hope it isn't something hairy this time", she thinks.
As she waits for Hewelathan's question regarding how to reach a port city, she eyes her new companions with curiosity. They were a weird bunch, but she had never travelled with so many people before, weird or not, and it was a nice change.
She did hope their endeavours, difficult as they were, would reach a good ending.
As the sun rises Flinn grumbles and moans a little bit and rolls over his back, pulling up the blanket to cover his own head.
"Wake up! move your lazy ass and pray and do your morning exercises... " he mutters with that other voice "Discipline!! Perseverance!! That's the way to success!! now stop stalling and get UP!"
He raises his torso and sits, looking around in surprise. Then, once he had recognized his surroundings and grumbling something like perhaps he has a curse upon him too he stands, grabs his sword and shield and goes outside to make some exercises while the others take breakfast. He re joins them a few minutes later.
"It is throwing a cold water bucket over my head part of this discipline you talk about? " he seems to be asking in his normal voice when he enters again.

The morning light wakes you early.
What will you all do next?
Unhappy that the market got rid of individual purchases for one-off subclasses, magic items, and monsters?

Hewelathan thanks the priests for the meal, but once they're no longer close enough to hear, he comments to the others, "I didn't realize that the followers of Ilmater were such ascetics! But maybe always being hungry teaches them to bear up under suffering." The meal seems like a normal dinner to you, but Hewelathan finishes his quickly and starts asking whether they want their roll, etc. Before dinner is even done, he's rummaging in his backpack and munching on some nuts and other dried food.
