Penumbra will wait for her cohorts to pick the lock. She will also take her hooded lantern back out from her pack and offer it to Esano. "I think this lantern will do you more good than I, you should hold on to it for now my friend."
Esano is successful in picking the lock, and the door swings outward with an audible creak. You are sure the sound can be heard throughout the entire house, but when you listen there is no sound but your own heavy breathing.
Now with the lantern in his hand Esano winces at the noise but moves forward carefully into the room allowing the light to play across the room as he looks over it.

The room is in a similiar state of neglect to the kitchen. White sheets cover what little furniture there is, and judging by your footprints on the dusty floor, you are the first to enter this room in a long while. A door at the far end of the room leads even farther into the ruined mansion.
Walter, studying the walls with a practiced eye, finds only mildew, dust, and mold.
Then the door at the end of the room creaks open, and a little girl, no older than five winters, stares at you, eyes wide and terrified. She clutches a toy doll protectively in one hand, and a lit candle in the other.

"Something is very wrong here" Esano whispers back to the others seeing the girl. He moves forwards but not in a direct line arcing round to the side allowing the others to see the room and the girl and to buy a little time. Pausing, unsure how to continue he seems to want to speak but doesn't quite manage to, he instead stares intently at the little girl trying to ascertain something about her.

Penumbra hangs back in the kitchen when she sees that there is no sign of anyone passing through the door and into the next room. She inspects the walls and floor for any other possible exits, still trying to figure out where the person who entered before the party could have gone to. Perception 14

Esano ascertains that the girl is clearly terrified of you, but there is nothing evil or otherworldy about her.
Nillis casts Detect Magic to see if anything is off with the girl or with the room. Perception: 11
The girl is small, even for her age, and her skin is pale, as if it rarely sees sunlight. Long black locks cascade down her shoulders, and she is dressed in a simple nightgown. Otherwise, Nillis recieves a similar impression as Esano.

In the light of the little girls' sputtering candle, you make out fresh footprints on the dusty floor. The footprints are too large to be that of the little girl, and are clearly not made by any of the party. But the impressions are faint and the light is insufficent to further investigate them.

"We don't mean you any harm, little one. Please don't be scared, we only came in to get out of the rain. Do you live here? Are there any adults around to look after you?" Esano tries to be as friendly as possible and has no weapons out.

"Couldn't sleep." The child states. "Me and Uncle Mub was going to get a snack." She looks scared for a minute. "Mother and Father don't like it when I take snacks. Don't tell them, maybe?" She seems to have overcome the worst of her fright.
Sorry about the wait. My posting is infrequent at best.
"Was it Uncle Mub who opened the door a little while ago? And where did you find a snack? We just came from the kitchen and there isn't any food there." Esano stays back so as not to crowd the girl.

The little girl shakes her head despairingly. "That's the old part of the house. Father says not to go there. The kitchens are that way." She points with her doll down the hallway. Suddenly she begins to look around her, frightened again. "Uncle Mub? Uncle Mub? Where are you?" She obviously no longer feels safe without her guardian around.
Nillis bends down to inspect the door. "Anyone got a lock pick?"
If no one has a lock pick, Stealth check to pass through the door without making noise: 20
Esano steps up using the light from the lantern to get a better look at the door. He slides out his set of lockpicks and begins to work on the door.
"Give me a moment, keep the light steady and I'll get this open."
OOC - For lockpicking - Esano has Thieve's Tools is the roll - Dex + proficiency (the benefit from the tools)? if so it is here 13

"Yes, we don't mean any harm. We are just waiting out the rain. Would you like to hear a story?" Nillis says in an attempt to calm the child.
