[ OOC: Correct me if I'm wrong. In area 12 we have Perrin, and in area 8 we have Sirius, Aubreen and Marlede. Oskar is stuck between those two areas and is causing instability in the structure of the cave. ]
[ OOC: I know that using an object is an action, but could Marlede use her bonus action in any way to make it easier for Aubreen to use the kit? It's okay if it's not possible. ]
I'd say no here, if only because there are some class features that would enable just this interaction (e.g. mastermind rogue can help with a bonus action) But also, the kit doesn't require a check to use anyway!
Marledes arrow cracks straight into the skull of the monster, sending splinters out the back. The head follows the motion of the arrow, bending over backward far enough for Perrin to see the dead grin.
In a blur, the wolf barrels into the bone colossus, cracking its spine in twain. The snapping sound echoes through the cave complex.
Like a puppet with snapped strings, the huge arms fall limp, the thing collapses. Bones the size of hitching posts clatter to the floor, breaking in half. The skull tumbles over to where the hag still lies motionless.
Sudden silence fills the chambers. The ceiling still groans occasionally, but might just hold on a bit longer now.
Initiative: 1. Marlede and Perrin already went, Aubreen and Sirius < YOUR TURN 2. Maud Chislebone [unsconscious], Oskar [destroyed]
Staying in initative because Sirius is making death saves.
Aubreen lowers the crossbow, wit the bones tumbled, the driving force fled from the monstrosity he drops his and retrieves his own Healers kit. Using it to stabalize Siruis. He will not pass into Trueheart this day. Torm may wait a while longer for his soldiers return.
"Tie the old crone, and gag her before she awakes. I have no rope, it is still hanging at the entrance." He makes sure that Sirius is fine, then slumps down beside him. Leaning heavily against the wall Aubreen pears at the cracks in the walls and ceiling. Listens for the groan of ice and stone. If he hears none, he will rest a bit. (Short rest?)
"Crack shot with that bow Marlede, Mine own sword is made to look as a toy in comparison." he looks over towards the crossbow, never a friend in his hands and wonders again why he carries it.
"Perrin, do you smell any other threats, is it quiet enough to recover?" He tries to read the wolfs expression, but was never good with animals either.
Though no longer in imminent danger of death, Sirius remains unconscious. His breathing and heartrate get steady once more. Without magical intervention, there is now only one medicine to waking up: time.
It will take Sirius 4 hours to regain 1 hit point.
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Calm down, Marlede... Breathe... There we go... It's over now...
As she calms down, she looks at Sirius, who's now stable after Aubreen used her kit.
"Unfortunately, that's all I'm good for," she responds to Aubreen's praise. "I would have gotten flattened by that thing if it weren't for you three. So I think you should keep this, since all I did was stand back like a coward..." And she will hand over her Healer's Kit.
"I had a choice to stop and tend to his wounds," she nods towards Sirius. "But I chose the arrow instead... I doubt Ilmater would have me on his good graces after this."
Marlede kneels down to touch the side of Sirius' face after taking off her gloves for that instant. [ Cure Wounds8 ]
"Apologies for keeping you waiting, Sirius. I hope this helped a little."
After healing Sirius, she will try to force her way through the remains of Oskar and make it to area 12. After casting Speak with animals, she looks at Perrin in his wolf form and says:
"You did a great job, standing your ground against the skeletal giant. If you go on ahead, I'll be able to understand you for ten minutes. So be careful and holler if you need me."
Marlede then proceeds to restrain Maud and makes sure she cannot speak incantations either using her rope.
Perrin lets out a long sigh of relief when Oskar finally collapses to the ground. Immediately, his attention turns to Sirius, but he relaxes when he see the others taking care of him. He gives a few tentative sniffs of the air at Aubreen's question, and then he does his best approximation of a shrug. "Threats" was a rather broad category, and to be honest, he'd much rather everyone take their rest outside the cave.
He was actually about to go scout out the surrounding tunnels when Marlede suddenly called out to him. He jumps a bit in surprise when he senses her magic binding to him, and it was quite the interesting experience to be on the receiving end of the spell. "Uh, thanks," he growls hesitantly. It felt good to talk normally again, though to be fair, it was due to a combination of magics.
"Um, I'll let you know if I need help," he rumbles. With that, he turns tail and starts padding down the tunnel. He gets only partway down the tunnel before he hesitates and turns around. Padding back to the group embarrassed, he mutters, "I forgot I can't see in the dark as a wolf." With a sigh, he sits back on his haunches, curious if any of the others had some sort of ingenious solution to his predicament.
Sirius wakes up still badly bruised and battered. ”Thank you. That was vlose, I thought I was gone. Shall I just rest here for a bit? I’m afraid a strong gust of wind could knock me out.” (Short rest)
Aubreen listens to the cracks above him, but they slowly fade away. Marlede binds up the hag tightly.
The dim light provided by the occasional cracks in the ceiling of this cave complex are enough to give Perrin an indication of its true size.
To the north, the path leads to a sharp drop of 10 feet, overlooking a cave filled with ice, the probable source of the river you walked in on. Dim light shines through an opening in the ceiling and illuminates the pool. The minerals in the ice have turned it a cloudy, bright blue. Entombed in the ice are the remains of four large skeletons, the faint outlines of their forms barely visible. Their proportions are the same as those of Oskar.
In the direction that the hag came from, a flight of natural stairs eventually leads down into a large chamber filled with the smell of cooking food. In the middle of the room, a large cauldron is set on the ground, bubbling and boiling, despite the lack of an obvious heating source. A sickly sweet smell permeates the entire cave.
Next to the cauldron, there is a square stone block, draped with the remains of butchered animals. Blood seeps down, innards are splattered across the floor, one intestinal tract hanging all the way into the cauldron. But Perrin can smell that something is wrong. These are not animal smells. Out of the vague darkness, a human face becomes visible. Tongue lolling out of the mouth, separated from the rest of the body. A hand lies next to it, hacked off at the elbow. The bubbles of the cauldron continue to pop.
Perrin can report back that at least there is nothing moving around.
"It's the least I can do," she'll respond to Sirius. "You should all rest for a while. I'll keep an eye on Maud and inspect the chamber ahead. I won't wake her up until we're ready to interrogate her. I think we should take her to Easthaven and have them punish her after we're done here."
OOC: The short rest would do nothing for Marlede, so if it's alright, she will drag Maud to area 14 and spend the hour investigating every nook and cranny of it after Perrin reports back.
Interests:
Anything that can help identify the bodies for when they report back to the townspeaker.
Close to the dead remains, Marlede finds discarded equipment. Torn apart winter clothing, not useable except for scraps, four sets of crampons, four fishing tackles, three ice picks (use item pick, miner's), and money pouches containing 24 silver in total. She finds a few unique items too: a necklace with the initial D.L. scratched into it, two different iron rings (one depicting a serpent, the other a fish) and a leather armband with a runic pattern.
The cauldron itself is made of thick copper that has turned green with age. It is 4 feet wide, has a mouth of around 3 and some feet in diameter, must weight about 50 pounds empty, and is currently filled with around 30 gallons of blubbering substance. Occasionally you see a finger bobbing to the surface. Embossed on its bulging sides are images of satyrs and nymphs in repose, holding ladles. The cauldrons has a matching lid (currently leaning on the side) and has side handles. It sits on five little clawed feet that keep it from tipping.
Marlede [Arcana 2]: You don't see any heat source, yet the cauldron is bubbling. Curious. There must be some magical explanation.
Aubreen gets up after a short rest. Feeling better, he swigs the last of his skin, holding it up and tipping back to get the last drop. -need a bigger skin, he thinks to himself.
"You have some color back Sirius, that's good" He states as he heads back towards the entrance to the cave. "I'm going g to retrieve the ropes, then climb across to the camp. Papers in there and maybe something I missed in my haste. Shouldn't be outta hollering distance if needed ok" He does what he just said.
Marlede will pocket the 24 sp in a separate pouch, along with the unique items (the necklace with the initial D.L. scratched into it, two different iron rings (one depicting a serpent, the other a fish) and a leather armband with a runic pattern). Those will go towards the victim's families, if any.
She will clean up the sets of crampons, fishing tackles, and ice picks (use item pick, miner's). Taking only one set of crampons and an ice pick for herself. The rest go to the group and they can do with it as they please (either keep it, sell it, or donate it).
Disgusted by the contents of the cauldron, so she will try to tip it over and get it cleaned, too. Then she will stand it up again to see if it continues to bubble up. It's either the hag's power that or the cauldron is magical. But again, she doesn't know anything about magic other than what she has learned to do by herself.
[ OOC: Marlede will stay in area 14 until everyone finishes their short rest and they meet her there. ]
Sirius bandages himself up and makes an herbal tea to help with the healing. While waiting for the concoction to take full effect, he takes out a book he took from the library: Iovisel's Commentary on Unbidden Thingsand begins to study it. (Study check: 2) "I'm feeling much better too." He states back to Aubreen. "Seems that we're mostly done here in the cave. Thank the Triad that the frost giants didn't materialize"
Sirius goes to the room where Marlede is seeing the brutality. "At least Ilmater must've rewarded them for the suffering they had to endure." He inspects the cauldron (Arcana: 4). "Seems that we we're too late. Let's tip over the cauldron so we can collect all the bits of the fishers so their families can give them proper burials, or at least as close to that as they can." Sirius helps Marlede tip over the cauldron spilling the substance on the floor.
If successful, he collects all the remaining body parts of the fishers and throws them into the empty cauldron for easier transport. "We might get a pretty penny for this. If not otherwise, perhaps for a metalsmith for the material. Perhaps we could help the families of the fishers with the proceeds." He muses. He picks up a set of crampons for himself and immediately puts them on and then picks the cauldron up and lugs it over to where he left Bouncer, fashioning a sled from some loose planks or branches to be pulled back into town by Bouncer.
While the others go on to the other caverns to gather out whatever they could find, Perrin stays in the cave with the giant skeleton and Maud to keep an eye on them. The last thing he wanted was for the hag to escape when they weren’t paying attention. Besides, to his lupine senses, the scent of human flesh was overpowering in the other chamber, and it was making him sick to his stomach.
Alone with the hag, Perrin finds himself pacing back and forth across the bone-littered floor of the cave, the images of dissected body parts and limbs playing unbidden through his mind. Glancing over at the unconscious form of Maud, Perrin feels a surge of red hot anger flood through him. Padding over to the hag, he finds a deep growl welling up in his throat. Maud was a despicable monstrosity, someone that deserved death for the atrocities she committed in the god-forsaken cave his friends were rummaging through. A deep, guttural growl of primal fury rumbles from his lupine throat as he brings his bared fangs close to her throat. It would take just one bite to rid the world of her vileness. He stands there still as a statue for what seems to be an eternity, glistening fangs poised over the hag’s exposed throat like an executioners axe.
Finally, he takes a step away from her and stalks back to the far side of the cave. No, he couldn’t kill someone who was defenseless, even someone as vile as Maud. What would he accomplish? Sure, there would be one less evil in the world to deal with, but Perrin would be no better than her, a cold-blooded murderer. Sitting back on his haunches, he watches the sleeping hag for any signs of her shaking of the poison, a dark glower spreading across his face. While he wouldn’t kill her now, that didn’t mean justice wouldn’t be served later on. It was best to just wait for the others…

"Damn, I thought the cauldron would fill itself up. Guess we need someone well versed in magic to identify it's properties. I wonder what the food will taste like if we make some in it..."
As she finishes up helping Sirius place all the body-parts inside the cauldron, she makes her way over to Maud and Perrin. Noticing her current condition, she guesses it's time to heal her up and get some answers.
"Alright, guys. I think it's time we wake Maud up. We can try to ask her anything we want, then we're taking her straight to Easthaven for her 'trial' and sentence. The people deserve to know what happened to their loved ones."
Once everyone is gathered around Maud, Marlede grabs her shortswords and casts Cure Wounds on her. 8
"You can't possibly be mad enough to eat food made in that cursed cauldron! You might very well turn into a toad. Or worse, a hag."
"We shouldn't wake her up here. It's too close to the skeletons in the ice. I certainly wouldn't want a fourfold repeat of the last fight." Sirius drags the unconscious hag right outside the cave entrance. He points his spear in the face of the hag and nods for Marlede to heal her up.
Scooping up the pages of dwarven text, he stuffs them into his pack. Takes another fifteen twenty minutes to finish searching the camp then hang drops to the frozen river and joins his companions outside. "I hope not every missing fisher and minor problem turns into the trouble we had here."
The hag opens her eyes. As she sees Marlede, she starts twisting in her restraints, not managing to move an inch. She continues wiggling for a few moments, then lays still. Vague surprise is to be seen on her features. She waits expectantly.
"Maud Chislebone, you are being detained for the crimes of kidnapping, murdering and eating however many hardworking fishers from Easthaven. You are extremely lucky for not being dead right now, so I will let you know we plan on taking you directly to the town, where you might have a trial and then sentence will be passed swiftly. And don't even think about escaping, they have means of restraining magic users like you."
She points over at the giant skeleton's skull, which was perforated by her last arrow.
"That could have been you. So I suggest you be cooperative and answer my friend's questions, if any. If you lie, I'll knock you out. If I don't like your answer, I'll knock you out. If you so much as conjure a speck of magic, well, you know the drill."
And Marlede will let the others speak their minds before concluding their business with Maud. As she looks at Maud, there is no expression of disgust or anger, only focus. Focus on detecting any indications of deceit from Maud as she answers.
The fish monster glowers at Marlede, but seems to have taken her words to heart. You see that under the furs and tangles, the hag is a scrawny thing, twisted bones and slick scales.
She creaks: "Now hold on, before you do anything you might regret, girl. I can give you riches beyond your imagination! You found your catch, no doubt they'll reward you for it. But it'll be nothing in comparison what I have stored away in the lake. It's all yours, if you let me go."
Marlede [Insight 13] finds no deception in these words.

Marlede will remove the gag from the hag's mouth.
