While it was quite loud, nothing seems to have taken offense at the noise. As the door swings open, it almost hits the desiccated corpse of an unusually large reptile lying in the middle of the floor on its back. Its shriveled tongue hangs out and all six feet stick up in the air. Clutched in one of its clawed feet is a transparent orb which gives off a faint blue light.
Further on, you see the beginnings of a larger hall. Along its walls there are two alcoves, both holding the remains of some statues. Whoever those figures were, they're smashed to pieces.
DM Note: The picture shows a skeleton, but the skin is mostly still intact, even if almost mummified,
Nikkitch enters with genasi, quick to home in on the strange corpse before him.
He begins with a quick examination of the creature in question, as he's curious to its origin, though he suspects he knows the species already. The orb is more of a quandary in and of itself, one he's keen to discern, though his immediate understanding of it eludes him. Pocketing it for the time being, he then proceeds to sweep his immediate surroundings for anything else of relative interest.
Nikkitch is able to determine that the creature must have been a sizeable basilisk. These creatures are famous for being able to turn others into stone with a mere gaze. This one must have died long ago.
As the kenku snatches the orb out from between the claws of the basilisk, he has just enough time to realize that it is magical before three giant centipedes break out of the disturbed corpse and attack!
DM: First use of the marching order! Initiative bonuses have been applied to Jaya and Canti.
Centipedes 2 and 3 try to bite Nikkitch as he grabs the orb from the corpse: To Hit: 18, damage: 4 piercing + DC 11 Con Save or take 8 poison To Hit: 21, damage: 3 piercing + DC 11 Con Save or take 11 poison
Centipede 1 shoots out of the corpse at Pisgah To Hit: 16, damage: 3 piercing + DC 11 Con Save or take 17 poison
Jaya will move to the square one east of Pisgah. I believe from there; I can hit all three centipedes with a 15-foot cone. Let me know if you disagree. I’ll unleash one of my breath weapon attacks.
The venom of these creatures are fierce, but Nikk has had far worse in his system from far more wretched things in his diet, and so shrugs it off fairly easily.
Reaching out, he attempts to grab the nearest insect, his outstretched talon sparking and sputtering.
[Shocking Grasp on the Centipede south of him. If it hits, the bug can't react until its next turn]
[To hit: 12 Damage: 8]
[Nikk will use his Arcane Deflection as a reaction, should he be attacked again, adding 2 to his AC.]
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Earlier ... While Nikk extracted fat from the troll and the others checked out the two dead-end corridores, Canti retrieved one of her arrows.
Now ... When the three centipedes burst out of the creature's corpse, the gnome jumps sideways into the corner, pulling out her bow and two arrows again.
Attack 1: 26 Damage: 9
Attack 2: 28 Damage: 6
She'll aim for #1 as long as it is still alive. If it dies, she'll aim at #2.
It seems that the giant centipedes' element of surprise and their potentially poisonous pincers were all that they had going for them; One expulsion from Jayas breath weapon is all it takes for them to get ripped apart. Their many legs twitch for a few seconds as they convulse on the floor, dead.
Initiative Over!
You gain an additional 30 XP for defeating the giant centipedes.
You step into a larger chamber, 60 feet in width and 100 feet in length. The ceiling vaults in arches to a height of 60 feet. Alcoves along the walls once held six statues, but five of them lie toppled and smashed to pieces on the floor. The sixth statue, located in the middle alcove along the east wall, remains intact and appears to be made of glistening black stone.
At the south end of the room, eleven lifelike statues in a variety of poses are clustered together.
Pisgah will move to 60 feet of the statues to be able to discern what he is seeing. He is trying to identify the statues. There seems to be one insect type statue, five smaller statues with spears (perhaps goblins or kobolds), and four other statues. Could this have been an adventuring party that encountered another group and they were all turned to stone by the basilisk?
Not sure what roll you would call for so went for the three that I think would best apply....
Pisgah is easily able to identify the humanoids: a male human wearing heavy armor and a longsword, a male half-orc wearing furs and wielding a warhammer, a female elf dual-wielding shortswords, two male halflings with staves, two female and one male goblin equipped with light armor and spears and two kobolds, also wielding spears. Investigation :Looking carefully at them and their poses, they seem too lifelike to be mere statues and Pisgah can be certain that they are indeed all petrified. The insect-like thing is large, sports tentacles at the front end and many stubbly legs along its body. History: Pisgah hasn't seen a creature like that before.
Perception: There is a glinting object hanging from one of the insect-things stony tentacles: a six-spired crown of copper.
Nikkitch readily sees that the basilisks body shows several wounds that have penetrated its scales and one eye socket has the remains of an arrow stuck inside. Medicine: it's not too far fetched to speculate that it died fighting adventurers. Then he inspects the statue for hints of what it may hide [perception 12]: Together with his cunning investigative talens, the kenku is able to determine that it's not the whole statue that is made out of this glistening black stuff - rather it is coated by it. The coating seems to be several inches thick and underneath you can faintly see the texture of stone.
Pisgah will call out to the rest of the party "Wow, folks, you have got to see this! I found the party that I think may have killed the basilisk. There is a statue of something else here that I have not seen before." Pisgah will go ahead and walk over to the stone insect and pick up the crown with his free hand.
Pisgah picks up the crown. It's six spires seem to be made of arrow-shaped inlays of malachite. Seems like a well crafted object. Not particularly useful, but valuable.
As Nikkitch starts to try and chip away the black material, his pick instead sinks into it with little resistance. Jelly? No, something far more corrosive! The pick starts sizzling and hissing as if the substance is eating away at it. At the same time, the entire coat on the statue sloughs downward, as if only just having noticed that gravity exists, descending directly in the kenkus direction.
A black amporphous and very much alive substance attacks Nikk!
DM: Jaya, Canti, Rico and Steels positions are guesstimates. If anyone disagrees with their positioning, feel free to adjust.
Initiative 1. All of you, surprised 2. Animated black jelly substance
Whatever it is, it seems intent on attacking whatever just stabbed something into it, which means the wizard. It falls onto the floor, almost completely separated from the now normal looking statue.
To hit Nikkitch: 9, Damage: 9 bludgeoning, 23 acid
Initiative 1. All of you < YOUR TURN 2. Animated black jelly substance
Seeing the oozing creature descend on Nikk, Pisgah shoves the crown on his head to free up a hand as he moves to the square just south of Jaya's position and throws two javelins at the creature.
Attack 1: 19 to hit for 6 piercing damage
Attack 2: 7 to hit on a nat 1......(not sure how bad this will be but hoping that Nikk ducks)
Nikkitch acts quickly after the first attack misses. He reaches forth, his talon sparking once more. All it takes is the tip of one claw to touch its surface and the creature begins to convulse. He then turns and retreats immediately, not caring about damage, moving as far away as he can in that moment (which I guess is 30ft west).
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
OOC: Canti would probably have been a little further away from the statue (the player suspected something foul since it was the only statue statue that was still whole), but where she is starting at is fine.
As she hears Nikk make a noise of surprise, Canti looks over and sees the outside of the remaining statue melting into some kind of ooze. She immediately moves 25 feet in the opposite direction (west). "Nikk, lookout!" she yells needlessly. At the same time, she draws two arrows and fires them at the unknown creature.
Attack 1: 23 Damage: 12
Attack 2: 28 Damage: 11
The first attack that hits is an arcane shot: grasping arrow (A creature hit by the arrow takes an extra 10 poison damage, its speed is reduced by 10 ft., and it takes 2d6 slashing damage the first time on each turn it moves 1 ft. or more. The brambles last for 1 minute, until you use this option again, or until any creature uses an action to remove them with an Athletics check (DC 14).)
